Those old Chessie/C&O camp cars sure caught my attention at 5:24!

The Dofasco trucks are what made these appear as the Canadian beasts they truly were. They out pulled anything else in that era. They sounded like a 40mph thunder storm and tossed crews around inside the cabs like nothing else. I was given a ride aboard #4707 leading #4539 and #4716 reversed pulling auto racks in 1985 at age 14 from Scarborough to Smith Falls Ontario. Best day of my young life!

Prehistoric Dash 9's....I loved these MLW's. The crews always had a love/hate relationship with them though. They out pulled anything else on rails but the ride was like being on a bull for a lot longer than 8 seconds.

The repair shop at Market stret is no longer used, where enigine 4236 is waiting outside the building.

It is amazing how much difference ther is in the tracks and buildings around the tracks in 30 years. The only spot I recognized is the engines going under 131 at Wealthy street, and of course crossing the river which now has cross beams falling through into the river.

So weird seeing an early CSX train carrying a bunch of T-72s and BMPs. Also crazy that the Russians are now fighting with tanks from the same era without any upgrades.

Another name trainmen had for eots was fred. It stood for fing rear end device. If they were hanging fred on the rear end of the train you knew what he meant.

The flashing boxes at the rear are eot. It means end of train device. Unfortunately when a train gets to be too long the eot loses contact with the head end and now the train is restricted in its speed. Usually down to 30 mph. Most trains now days are too long. Usually around around 6800 feet is when the eot starts to lose communication. Many trains these days greatly exceed this length.

They started disappearing in the late 80s and early 90s. The bigger lines, now run by mostly lawyers have figured out that by offering more money the conductors would sell out the brakemen. Now they want to run trains with engineers only and with computerized trains, which they now have had for a few years, not even engineers. They break union agreements every day and don't care. It is all about money. Expect more of the types of accidents they had in East Palestine. The only problem the railroads had with that accident was that they had to blame it on faulty equipment and not the crew. Believe me, the crew was thoroughly drug tested afterwards first. Then they had to come up another explanation. Trains will continue to get bigger. Money talks.

I miss those Alco/MLW locomotive's that CP and CN had. Great times back then. I also enjoyed seeing those CAST containers on flat cars. Excellent video , well done 😊👍

Excellent video from a long gone era in railroading. All kinds of awesome motive power including CP Alco/MLW units and several nice freight cars in here with many boxcars. The freight with the CP cabooses was also a welcome suprise. Good footage. 😁👍

Absolutely magnificent !!! I love the sight and sound of those CP Alco/MLW units especially at 5:30 when all three units are chugging and puffing that black smoke , awesome ! The whole scene from 4:57 to 5:50 is one of the best I've seen of the big Alcos in action. The third unit M-636 # 4706 looks cool with her heavily weathered condition and a faded multi-mark logo. Excellent video and thank you very much for posting this. 😊👍

Ah nice , the spoils of war. The military loads look to be captured Russian built tanks and other armored vehicles. Possibly from the Iraqi Army since it is just after the Gulf War. I thought the tank wheels in the thumbnail looked to be from a T-55 and the self propelled AA gun looks cool. Excellent video.

Fantastic ! Excellent video as you captured some very interesting railroad action. I love the Detroit & Mackinac C-425 at the end , one of my favorite Railroads and nice CP Rail Alco/MLW and EMD power featured in here. I hope the driver was alright after the incident. The car looked pretty messed up. It was also a treat to see the old Chessie System loco's and all the classic freight cars including the D&M boxcar on the CP freight early in the video. Good stuff 😊👍

I was just near the corner of Leonard and Plainfield two days ago and the train went past. February 2023

We have out there regularly since 2008. In the tar yard. The first time we went my son was three years old and the guys took us into the repair building and showed us around. He well be eighteen this summer.

If it doesn't undercut, what's the point?

Unfortunately, modern railroading is more about PSR and the low operating ratio, than it is about serving customers. The big boys want to be able to couple on to a long cut of cars and pull it to a point as far away as possible, with no switching or breaking up the train, or changing crews. They forget that a car has to have a starting place and an ending place. Even most of your short lines are owned by a larger entity; hence Wall Street and stock price is a big consideration with them, too! No time for picking up or setting out small blocks of cars. The short lines were supposed to take up the slack, where Class 1’s didn’t want to go. I think the reason these places are quitting rail is lack of customer service, reliable service, Class 1’s raising rates too high (although it’s still probably cheaper to ship rail). Some of these businesses also probably close their doors simply due to the high cost of doing business these days, or they are simply obsolete and not needed anymore?!

Not only is this before wide cabs, but is also before stack trains and spine cars. Loved seeing the 89’ TOFC car again! Loved seeing CP SD40’s, too, which at one point was all you saw on road trains! Also good to see Chessie’s wide array of 4-axle power! Good to see several Alcos, too! Thanks for the memories!
