I know this video is 6years old but better late then never. For those who run across this and still question what the surface skimmer does here goes. It uses surface tension on the water to “skim” the floating oils proteins and dissolved solids (the rainbow looking stuff and floating debris on your waters surface) off the surface and into the filter area. Where it’s mixed up and removed by various filter methods. Particularly useful if you use a protein skimmer. It also aids in keeping the surface clear so as to allow for maximum light transfer unimpeded by the floating solids on the surface. It should be adjusted so that the water in the filter area is lower then the tanks water level. If they are the same level it won’t work properly. 👍

Thank you so much for your service and dedication! You put in so much hard work to prepare for the video, and I'm so proud of you for wanting to share your knowledge with the community. Six years may have passed, but I wanted to take this opportunity to let you know how much your efforts are appreciated. Your courage and commitment are truly admirable.

I know this video goes a few years back, but wanted to say this light fixture works great in most Nano reefs; been using the 2 Gen Pro (Now discontinued) and able to grow all types of corals with it at 70% intensity. Love the bracket, but is not compatible when using the inTank media baskets. Total success with both EVO 5 and 13.5 Thank you for sharing this video

Soto summarize, you took the foam block and cut the middle out and filled that with carbon/the ceramic media and purigen then put it into chamber 2. Took the rest of the foam and put it on top in chamber 1 and put biological stuff on the bottom? Im asking because I want to do the same setup, having trouble getting a setup I want for this and I really like that one as its cheap as I dont wanna spend 75 on inTank stuff or 65 on the PS2 skimmer
@MidwestReefer Жыл бұрын
Yes you are correct you can use the foam block as a makeshift media rack. The order in which things are inside of the foam or in which chambers or preference to you in your set up. I will let you know since this video posted there are cheap alternative media racks out there that are cheaper than intake.

@stephanievasquez54132 жыл бұрын
It’s only filling to about 40% and my middle column looks like there isn’t anything in it
@MidwestReefer2 жыл бұрын
Normally you would fill it up from the back of the sump area/filter area. But yeah you’ll just keep filling your tank up and you should see the water flow into the filter inlet and then you’ll have to wait until the rear balances out, or finish filling it from the back.

Did you totally remove the foam pad with the carbon and biomedia in it? Or do you leave the original foam filter in with biomedia to house the bacteria?
@MidwestReefer2 жыл бұрын
Yes I did remove the foam block. This media rack takes the place of that, but still houses your preferred media. as far as the bacteria, that is what the live rock is for. however you can add ceramic media in on of the chambers if you wish. In addition you can keep the foam block in the second camber of the rear sump where the skimmer would sit. keep in mind the foam dose filter the big stuff, but can also act as a nitrate factory if not cleaned often, due to the build up of solid waste. hopes this helps, feel free to ask me anything!

What fluval wavemaker should i use for my 37 gal. Freshwater tank??
@MidwestReefer2 жыл бұрын
There’s a lot of choices out there and some have ratings for the tank size they should go in. The one I’m currently using is the (AI Nero 3) from Aqua illuminations. This is not the cheapest option, but it’s not the priciest neither. it’s right in the middle, I think it’s a good buy.

Why clog that hole?
@MidwestReefer3 жыл бұрын
Because if not then some of the water will be able to bypass the filtration. Supposed to be a repercussion so the overflow sump does not run dry, But if you have an auto top off system it shouldn’t be a problem therefore I would plug the hole to get maximum suction infiltration through the main overflow

@MidwestReefer4 жыл бұрын
The stock filter being all foam, catches of waste. But over time will become a nitrate factory. Eventually it will get gunked up and not clean as well as it first did. Eventually its structure will deteriorate and I won't do as good of a job, as it did in the beginning. Long-term it would cost you more money to keep a filter like this due to having to replace it.
