I know this video is 6years old but better late then never. For those who run across this and still question what the surface skimmer does here goes. It uses surface tension on the water to “skim” the floating oils proteins and dissolved solids (the rainbow looking stuff and floating debris on your waters surface) off the surface and into the filter area. Where it’s mixed up and removed by various filter methods. Particularly useful if you use a protein skimmer. It also aids in keeping the surface clear so as to allow for maximum light transfer unimpeded by the floating solids on the surface. It should be adjusted so that the water in the filter area is lower then the tanks water level. If they are the same level it won’t work properly. 👍

Thank you so much for your service and dedication! You put in so much hard work to prepare for the video, and I'm so proud of you for wanting to share your knowledge with the community. Six years may have passed, but I wanted to take this opportunity to let you know how much your efforts are appreciated. Your courage and commitment are truly admirable.

The piece is to allow you to raise the water closer to the top of the tank. A lot of people don't like the fact there is about 1 inch of unused tank. Also if you raise the display level you have to add saltwater, as you are adding more volume to the tank

What up MidWestReefer ...I just subscribed to your channel luv the content. I just purchased the Fluval Evo 13.5 and was wondering what are your thoughts on MARINEPURE CERAMIC BIOMEDIA. I was thinking of getting the 1.5 inch squares and placing them on the bottom of Chambers 1 and 2 of the sump area. I will be using the protein skimmer in chamber 1 and I have the intank media basket in chamber 2 planning on using filter floss and gfo....what are your thoughts?
@richardlecomte90346 жыл бұрын
Hey great looking tank. How long do you keep the Phosguard in the bottom rack? Do you put something else instead after you take it out?
@King_Henry7 жыл бұрын
Just use a black suction cup from one of your powerheads (or heater etc) to plug up the filter hole :-).
@MidwestReefer7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the view and comment. That's a very very smart idea man! I did already plug it though. Don't forget to subscribe because I got plenty more coming, and i'll be sure to check you out!

The surface skimmer actually does do something. If it's positioned at the right height, you'll actually see waste at the surface speed up as it enters the slots to the intake chamber. Problem is that you have to keep repositioning it as the water level in the tank drops. If you don't keep an eye on it, you could block the water from entering the chamber all together.
@MidwestReefer7 жыл бұрын
Barry Hutchinson Thanks for this, you've made me that much smarter. I do have my Ato, so no problems so far, let's hope that continues haha.

Did you totally remove the foam pad with the carbon and biomedia in it? Or do you leave the original foam filter in with biomedia to house the bacteria?
@MidwestReefer2 жыл бұрын
Yes I did remove the foam block. This media rack takes the place of that, but still houses your preferred media. as far as the bacteria, that is what the live rock is for. however you can add ceramic media in on of the chambers if you wish. In addition you can keep the foam block in the second camber of the rear sump where the skimmer would sit. keep in mind the foam dose filter the big stuff, but can also act as a nitrate factory if not cleaned often, due to the build up of solid waste. hopes this helps, feel free to ask me anything!
@lonestarpatriot8765 жыл бұрын
I did not get the surface skimmer in my package when I bought my Evo, however, it is not needed. I am not even sure why they made it. Also, the Intank boxes are cool, but, you can also run a phosphate/media reactor at about the same price, or a protein skimmer and a Phosphate media reactor.
@MidwestReefer5 жыл бұрын
I was kind of thinking the same thing back in the day. but it did help direct the water flow for the media box.
@charmed04154 жыл бұрын
@@MidwestReefer Its to adjust the water level in the main tank. If you put it on the inside of the tank you can adjust up and down to raise or lower the water level.

Thank you for making this! What’s the point in changing out the stock filter holder? I’m getting one of these from someone and want to upgrade it right off the bat! Is it not good enough stock?
@MidwestReefer4 жыл бұрын
The stock filter being all foam, catches of waste. But over time will become a nitrate factory. Eventually it will get gunked up and not clean as well as it first did. Eventually its structure will deteriorate and I won't do as good of a job, as it did in the beginning. Long-term it would cost you more money to keep a filter like this due to having to replace it.

I honestly think the foam and filtration should go first because must tanks are like that. They go through a filter bad or foam before anything else. Then the go through the skimmer and reactor and other stuff like that, then possibly refuguim if not a return. I might get this tank myself and I am very excited.
@MidwestReefer6 жыл бұрын
I agree, thats why I have it setup the way i do. thanks for the comment!

MidwestReefer The only concern I have is light. What is your experience with the light? Is it good for corals? Should I upgrade it?

MidwestReefer thanks. Great videos. Very helpful.
@MidwestReefer6 жыл бұрын
In short I would change the light when it is convenient for you. The light I got (Current orbit marine 18-24") , is probably the best for the money, and I have gotten a lot of growth. Now of course the( AI prime nano) or (Kessile marine) are good, but we are talking $200- $300 price range. The main thing these lights all have in common is the pro controllers. letting you control the lights in a very detailed way.. my light should be in the link to the video i told you to watch... hope this helps.

isnt the media basket meant for chamber two?

can you run the PS2 skimmer in the middle chamber after installing this basket?
@MidwestReefer7 жыл бұрын
Neno Coelho Thanks for the view, and comment. You could run the skimmer second, but would lose the back lid... plus probably better to let the skimmer do its thing first, let the media basket catch the rest.
@Fit-HubIO6 жыл бұрын
Ditch the skimmer, I ran it in mine for about 3 weeks. The InTank basket and weekly water changes of 2 gallons is the way to go!

Quick question what are you running in your media basket. Still the floss, chemi pur and bio media??
@MidwestReefer6 жыл бұрын
Nuno Sousa I run filter floss, chemi pure blue, and GFO. And that's been for the last year or so, and working great.
@NsousaFX6 жыл бұрын
MidwestReefer Hey midwest any issues with your intank backing up? I cant get a day where it looks like it starts to back up. Which throw the ato off a bit. Also how do you know how much gfo to run? Did you have phosphate issues(algae) Thanks a million!
@MidwestReefer6 жыл бұрын
No Iv'e never had back up issues, although I guess it could if you have alot of waste in the tank, and its building up on the filter floss. I add or remove filtration based off how my tank looks... when I fill my media bags, the key is to make sure there not packed tight, and that there is room in each rack for them to move in the media basket. If you go to my Instagram(check the description box) I should have a detailed vid or photo on how my setup looks, hope this helps.

Let me know if you still have this Evo tank, considering getting this for my daughter for her first tank of her own to keep a pair of Ocellaris clownfish.... I believe the piece you were questioning was meant to be used to adjust the level of where the water flows through the wier slots ...

@@MidwestReefer picked one up today for her, with some substrate, bucket of salt mix, a Spongebob house decoratio , etc... got the smaller fluval powerhead, heater, extra carbon packs, and a few other bits... just need to get the rock scape set up and find the small skimmer in stock locally... amd we will soon he ready for fish.... gonna use another 20, 25, and 29g for some quarantine and such as we get livestock, I have some crushed coral substrate for that that could be sacrificial if we ended up needing to... Can't wait to get back in...also foumd glass tops in stock for a few tabks and a couple 40breeders today at the same store... close to setting up 3 new tanks, and 3 old ones...half of them saltwater

That little face skimming piece does absolutely! Neither does the intank #1 basket. Don't waist your money on it.

Why clog that hole?
@MidwestReefer3 жыл бұрын
Because if not then some of the water will be able to bypass the filtration. Supposed to be a repercussion so the overflow sump does not run dry, But if you have an auto top off system it shouldn’t be a problem therefore I would plug the hole to get maximum suction infiltration through the main overflow
