I have to assume the turtle has an instinct telling it there is water nearby due to being dropped away from the water? This turtle obviously got lost, and wound up away from it's habitat so I think his/her radar is malfunctioning so I would have dropped it into or beside the water!😁😎👍✌🗽

I prefer to release them directly into the water if possible. But I also don’t want to remove them from their home range. Those were the two competing factors that led me to release him in the wetland meadow behind the school rather than driving him a few miles away to a bigger creek. He’s out of the road, a few hundred yards from the parking lot. I didn’t want to get any closer to the wetland myself and get stuck in the mud, but he’ll know what to do.

@@ForgottenFriendReptileTV Oh, that's great, he's in a known space. I didn't recognize that, and wondered if the poor thing would get lost again. Sounds perfect, just hope he doesn't find the carpark again. Oh well, ForgottenFriendsReptile will be there to rescue him if need be.😁👍✌

It’s always a judgement call when they don’t seem to have a great water source nearby. But I try not to move them too far 🤷‍♂️ and snapping turtles thrive in surprisingly mediocre ponds and wetlands around commercial buildings like these.
@BethKatzPA

Thank you for moving it. I moved one off River Road near Safe Harbor a few days ago. I picked it up by the shell with two hands behind its back legs. It was too big to use just one hand. It couldn't stay on the road. I only moved it several feet off the road to the edge of the woods.
