I will say, everyone must be wearing fake pennanular brooches. In every picture, the pin emerges from the fabric, in between the opening in the ring. If this was a real pennanular, the ring would be moving, and the fabric it’s supposed to be holding, would not stay. You’re supposed to rotate the ring about 90 degrees, so the pin crosses the ring to hold the fabric in place. Having worn quite a few correctly functioning pennanular brooches with pins as large as 7”, the poking end of the pin needs to be aimed away from the center of the body so you don’t poke yourself, or anyone else.

Hi Pat, likely this is a modern interpretation. I don't think Dany's dragon brooches were true pennanluar brooches either, more like the Tara Brooch.

@@Costume_CO Tom said in an interview I think that he talked with the team doing the wigs and decided they would intentionally make his hair messier like he just rolled out of bed to match the character. It does suit Aegon as a character I think. He throws on expensive doublets but doesn’t really care enough to do his hair. The set designers also said in a bts video that Aegon doesn’t have as much furniture in his rooms as Alicent and Helaena for a similar reason. He probably thinks those things are frivolous or too time consuming

Helaena’s velvet nightgown is so lush 🫶🏻 I love that they’ve reincorporated existing garments from S01 and GOT into this series. It feels more consistent with the world building. It is fantasy after all and not a historical documentary. I think that element of fantasy was kind of missing from S01 in the costumes. I think the structure of the ladies garments have also improved. Looking forward to coming episodes and eagerly awaiting your takes on them 🥰

I love that Caroline is more open to lend from the already existing material and costumes, may it be the first season of this show or GOT. It gives us more the feeling these two shows are in the same world - which I was missing in the first season. The fitting seem to be improved too. I am very hopefull! Agreed on #1! I really appreciate the callbacks that Caroline has done for not just S1 of HotD but with GOT as well. I also love Jaces and surprisingly, Aegon II’s outfit. I noticed the fabric choice for his Green outfit right away during the ep so it’s nice to get more confirmation on the fabric being from S1. I hope we get more of Baela and Rhaena - so far, I wasn’t impressed with their ep 1 outfits. Really looking forward to the rest of the season - we’ve only gotten a taste so far!

I love Alicent's aureola's headpiece. Rhaenyra wore a similar one in the first season, when crowned. I read an interview with the costume department in which they said that they were inspired by Byzantine Empire. In both occasions we've seen them -- a coronation and burial -- are formal. So we can imagine that aureolas were at some point fashionable in Westeros, but they have fallen in use and nowadays are only used as formal attire. Great way to convey how fashion evolves and how certain elements, despite that, are kept fossilized and used in only certain occasions.
@Costume_CO
@Costume_CO 12 күн бұрын
Jey, jo, thanks for commenting. Yes, there is some Byzantine and Moroccan inspo in the design. Technically speaking, Alicent's headress is a diadem and Rhaenyra's fealty headress is a Kukoshnick although it has the same shape as a Tudor era French hood but without the hood.

@@Costume_CO Nice! Thanks for the lingo of it all! Anyhow, what I like is that, regarding GoT, HotD seams to convey that clothes are more conservative -- as it should be, 'cause it happens before -- as woman headpieces are shown still in fashion for formal situations.

Hi Kev, they are Pooh and Tigger portrait shoes! Here is the part of the script where I talk about Danny: Danny Torrance is the son of Jack and Wendy Torrance, played by 6 year old actor Danny Lloyd. Given what Canonero has said, Danny’s colour palette and all American in red, white and blue and stars and stripes like we see with his Bugs Bunny shirt. Many of his clothes are also in primary colours because they were highly popular at the time, especially for kids. I like to think that his mother Wendy dresses Danny well as a sign of her love for him, but also in sunny bright colours as a way to protect him. You’ll see that throughout the movie, there are pop cultural influences in the décor and costumes, from Snoopy to Mickey Mouse and Winnie the Pooh. Taking a note from what the costume designer said about the family, I looked to late seventies vintage catalogues and with a hint from the Overlook Hotel Tumblr account I discovered that a great deal of Danny’s costumes, as you will see, are right out of the Sears 1977 Fall and Winter catalogue. In case you didn’t know, Sears was an affordable brand for middle class families. It makes sense from a story telling perspective that we would first meet Danny wearing a Bugs Bunny shirt, considering that his parents call him Doc, as in “What’s Up Doc?”. And his shoes are these striped oxfords by Toughskins. Many of Danny’s costumes appear to be the Sears Toughskins brand, which were primarily marketed for their durability. According to the Sears archives, Toughskins debuted as a new blend of materials, including Dacron Type 59 polyester, DuPont 420 nylon, and cotton. I think the shirt pictured here is this blue chambray shirt with epaulettes. It appears to match Danny’s shirt from the Stanley Kubrick archives at the University of the Arts London. And just to make things a bit easy for me, I discovered on a nearby same page this Toughskins belt with buckle. So you can see what it looks like in closeup, here is a vintage Toughskins belt buckle that I found on Etsy. And while Danny’s jacket appears to be blue with red accents, his Flyers jacket is actually blue and orange like we see here in this vintage Philadelphia Flyers Vintage Starter Script Jacket. I have no idea why Danny might be a Flyers fan. If you have an idea, let me know in the comments. Another pair of Danny’s shoes are these Pooh and Tigger portrait shoes. The original pair currently live at the Kubrick Archive in London. One of Dany’s most iconic outfits of course it this look while he is riding his big wheel down the halls of the Overlook Hotel. Danny’s tartan blue shirt appears to be this one from the Sears catalogue. Here it is in the Kubrick archives looking practically new, so maybe there is something to the Toughskin brand, or perhaps keeping it wrapped in acid free tissue paper has kept it protected all of these years. While I couldn’t find it in the catalogue, his overalls look similar to these blue denim Toughskins with white stitching… And his shoes look like red Converse. What’s funny or not so funny about this shot it that we get a very tight closeup of Danny here when he first the Grady daughters. I thought that his red hoody might be this one… And I’m almost certain that the shirt is this red, white and blue check western style shirt, again with the all American colours, but what surprised and delighted me was that the blue sweatshirt he is wearing is actually this one… But of course we had no idea because Danny is so tightly framed in the shot. I just love the idea that Wendy would choose this sweatshirt for him because they are clearly very close. Another jacket that I discovered through the archives is this one…but like me you might wonder when we Danny wearing that jacket? Well, because of the near white out conditions you can barely make it out. You will however remember Danny in the maze the first time and I’m pretty certain that he is wearing this plaid CPO Jacket. Here is the red plaid shirt but unfortunately I couldn’t find his Mickey Mouse Sweater. I did find some Disney licensed Mickey Mouse boys tops so it appears that they were popular in the late seventies. Danny’s blue Apollo 11 sweater is much talked about. In 1969, Apollo 11 was the spaceflight that first landed humans on the Moon. The sweater was apparently knitted by a friend of costume designer Milena Canonero. Leon Vitali, who was personal assistant of Stanley Kubrick at that time said in a 2017 interview in The Guardian that Canonero thought the sweater was "just the sort of thing that a kid that age would have liked." As you can see by this vintage knitting pattern, these brightly hued sweaters appear to have been a popular item for children in the late seventies. In the Sears catalogue I found other rocket themed sweaters. There were likely multiple sweater made for Danny because in this scene, his sweater is ripped at the shoulder. After production wrapped, Danny’s screen accurate sweater was purchased by first assistant Editor Gill Smith, who bought it for her nephew. After he grew out of it, the sweater was returned to her, and it remained in her possession for the next thirty years. According to the Kubrick archives, it’s now owned by Pixar Director Lee Unkrich otherwise known as the Caretaker at the Overlook Hotel Tumblr account. Late in the movie, Danny wears a red pyjamas. I’m pretty sure that it’s this Winnie the Pooh fleece sleeper. Unfortunately, I couldn’t find this brown terry towel bathrobe. And finally, Danny’s final costume that brings us toward the final, terrifying ending, he’s wearing this wool sweater with another tartan print shirt and pants. Feel free to email me if you would like the pictures. My email is [email protected]. Cheers, Heidi.
