During theatrical release, the costumes went on a publicity tour. I saw them up close at a Jordan Marsh in Boston. They were incredibly rich and detailed, with aging to make them look well-worn. But the display was protected by nothing more than a velvet rope, and soon people had ripped off some of the eagle-embossed tunic buttons, and stolen a crysknife out of its sheath.

Jessica's designs and hairdos are legendary in that Dune movie. Looking vaguely like a Renaissance Tudor figure. She looked both vampy and regal. Of course, Princess Irulan with her hairdo in the intro is an all time classic that throws Princess Leia under the bus... The Guild guys just inspired the Borg aesthetic in Star Trek TNG imo... Atreides uniforms are an all time classic, although I must admit, the Villeneuve version is very good as well and I prefer the stylized Hawk emblem of the Villeneuve version more with victoriously spread wings, resembling an inversed Hiigaran emblem in Homeworld video games. The stillsuits are fantastic in this movie. You add those to the Guild guys, you obtain The Borg !

This film was and is polarizing, and the production was harrowing, but I personally loved it from the first viewing. The costumes and sets were opulent, uniquely presented, and incredibly detailed. Thank you for your analysis! You include behind the scenes stills, and discuss the fabrics and design influences. I love historical content, and your productions are always really interesting Edit: my favorite costumes were those worn by Bene Gesserit Nuns. They were suitably imposing, appropriate as they were the secret driving force manipulating events in the novels

As a long time fan of Lynch’s adaptation, I recommend checking out the 3 hour long Spice Diver fan edit. It reintroduces a lot of the scenes which were cut; Paul’s fight with Jamie, the collecting of the water of life, Thufir’s death etc etc. It also has a slightly different introduction & a few editing changes. It’s probably as close as we’ll ever get to Lynch’s vision. Dune was filmed in Mexico; both in the deserts & on huge sound stages. For all its faults, the cast is incredible, visually Lynch’s Dune is stunning & the soundtrack is on point. I randomly met Dean Stockwell in a South London pub several years back & I asked him about his time on Dune. On a side note: Ive just got hold of the 4K restoration of Dune & it looks stunning!! Also...the 80s toy of Feyd was planned to be released with the cat in a box as an accessory.

It sounded like shooting was as intense & fraught as you can imagine. Another little piece of information you might want to check out: Molly Wryn who played Jamis’s wife Harah, recently added an unseen piece of footage from Dune to her KZfaq channel. It’s an incomplete scene that’s in the book, where Harah speaks to Jessica about Alia.

I loved that the Westwood Studios Dune games (particularly Dune 2000 and Emperor Battle for Dune) kept the David Lynch aesthetic and concepts (the Fremen carryin wierding modules from the movie) while also branching creatively (the designs for House Ordos, Baron Rakkan Harkonnen sporting the Harkonnen bull sigil on his back, the Tleilaxu). I particularly love the design of the Bene Gesserit.

Jesus….your knowledge of historical fashion is so encyclopaedic - as well as educational - I feel like I could hold my own at any high couture event. Another feast for the senses. Okay….although there was so much enlightenment, I was here primarily for the stillsuits, a word that still has me yelling out loud in frustration. A few years after the film, the much celebrated British fetish magazine, Skin II ran a tiny advert, practically hidden away in the ‘exotic’ personals section. It detailed that much of the suits in Dune had been constructed from rubber and there were many outfits up for grabs. More over, it seemed like they were being given away! I knew instantly that these had to be the numerous Fremen stillsuits. Although barely 16, I wish to Hell I had chased this lead up. The clandestine nature of the advert, as well as the then underground stance of the publication, seemed very much intended. They obviously intended it to be seen by fetishists. There was indeed an air of both mystique and prurience to the affair. A short time later I saw this 1991 video from the Scots synth group ‘Shamen’. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/idaaod2p2cCagZs.htmlsi=kmNUtSEGrjhrKci3 Forget Captain Picard, Patrick Stewart will always be Gurney Halleck in my eyes. @@Costume_CO Greetings, Heidi. I think Dune suffered the Bladerunner/The Thing syndrome, in that they were all too ahead of their time to be fully appreciated. I cannot wait for your costume analysis. Here’s a bit of trivia that always makes me collapse laughing. Watch this clip paying attention at the 1:28 mark. A knight ascending the scaffold, holding a cudgel in his right hand is clearly smoking a cigarette!!!! You actually see him place it in his visor, take a puff and leave it hanging in his mouth. Beautiful narration for this video. I actually seen some costume pieces on display at MACY*S on Market Street in San Francisco before '80s DUNE was released. I was never fan of the movie because it was too rushed for a massive novel. However from the model work down to the costumes was impressive. The music was too dated. Even for its time we all knew the soundtrack would be outdated by the late-80s.The scenes taken out from the book were confusing and out of place or missing, especially if you didn't read the book. It was a challenging movie to watch as a viewer. But it is a fun pop cultural film to watch on a Saturday night with fresh butter popcorn. And for the new DUNE movies, they are perfect and respectful to Frank Herbert legacy.
