Is the base for this drill (its internals) the same as the Hyper Tough 12V Max Lithium-Ion Cordless 3/8-inch Drill Driver? If yes, then the extra $15 is only for having a 90 degree attachment, which you may get for a much lower price elswhere.

This is an incomplete review, it is missing an important test on resilience. Just because you drilled a few holes, or screwed in a few screws, doesn't mean the drill is good, unless you do this multiple times, enough to see that it doesn't burn after many tries. Otherwise, you can call it disposable.

I am glad the video helped you decide!! If Hart will meet your needs I would say also consider Ryobi (like Hart, Ryobi power tools are made by TTI) and Bauer. Both have a large line of tools and offer some tools in both brushed and brushless models. And for the most part, are more or less in the same general price range. Bauer (Harbor Freight) is often on sale or part of a promotion. For many people the Hyper Tough is fine. My neighbor used hers to trim branches and to remove very small trees (about 1 to 3 inch thick trunks). But each cut normally took well under a minute to a few minutes tops. But Hyper Tough is not ideal for people with bigger jobs that require constant use or with tasks with very long run times based on my limited testing. If a person needed a reciprocating saw for small quick tasks I think it is fine. I know my response is a bit wordy... but I hope it helps other people too who happen to read it. Thank you for taking the time to leave a comment.

How long does it take to charge? Does it really charge in 45 minutes like advertised?
@CluelessDudesRealToolReviews
@CluelessDudesRealToolReviews 3 ай бұрын
Typically, in a perfect world where no energy is lost to heat, the time it takes to charge a battery is based on the following: Time = Capacity of the battery / Output of the charger. Example 1: 2 amp charger charging a 1.5 amp-hour battery: 1.5 /2 = 3/4 Hour = 45 minutes Example 2: 2 amp charger charging a 2 amp-hour battery: 2 /2 = 1 hour But due to heat loss and changes in battery capacity these are just rough numbers. I just charged a "fully drained" Hyper Tough 2 amp-hour battery with a 2 amp charger and it took about 1:15 So the above formula is just rough numbers. Hope the above helps!!

The charger that comes with the drill is a slow charger... about 0.45 amps if I recall correctly. To make the math easier lets call it 0.50 amps. 1.5/0.5 = 3 ....... So about 3 hours with the included charger if my math is correct and the included 1.5 amp-hour battery is "fully drained". Please note, I mainly use the 2 Amp charger that I bough separately which typically takes less than an hour to charge a 1.5 amp-hour battery. Hope the above helps.

Thank you for the kind comment. It was a fun video to make since I did not know how it would turn out!!! It is often hard to know when it is worth spending the extra money on a better tool if it is not being used commercially. There is no one "right answer" for everyone since it varies person to person how it will be used. My goal of most of my videos is to let people see the differences between tools through testing to help people see the general level of each tool before they purchase. That is fantastic!!! I have seen a couple of reviews on the Walmart website where people have said they could not get their "new" batteries from a kit to charge. I suspect (wild guess) that there were kits that were sitting around for quite a while. I wonder how many could have been fixed with this trick!! I have also seen people with tools they have not used in years have the same issue and resolved it the same way. I will note for anyone thinking of doing this, do so at own risk since lithium-ion battery fires are hard to put out!!! Seek help of a competent electronics expert to help prevent fires..... Do so at own risk.... etc....Undesired fire bad!! Congratulation on winning the free tool lottery!!!

It's not that the lower-priced options won't work (at least for a bit), but you're paying for longevity. If you only use them occasionally, you'll probably be fine, but with any sort of regular usage, those the HART and Bauers won't last. My brother-in-law built a fence with a newly purchased HART and it didn't even make it through the fence build before breaking. At least it was still in warranty and he was able to get it replaced.

Thank you for the comment. I am curious which tool broke (impact driver? Brushless? Shaft break or motor burnt? If you know, if not no problem. The DeWalts I know have a great reputation for being robust. When I built my deck I did it with a DeWalt Atomic Impact driver and Drill. Very happy with them. Bauer, for DYI folks, seems to have a decent reputation, but I do not know anyone who uses them day to day professionally. I know a few people that have used them for DYI and recommend the brand for residential use....but again, they are not using them professionally. Hart, especially their brushless models, is the big mystery for me in terms of longevity. I do not know anyone who had used them on a regular basis year in and year out for large DYI projects. I have a crazy dream that someday all 18V/20V Max batteries will be made to an international standard so they can be shared between brands. I suspect at some point such rules will be created as more items run on batteries. If this were to happen then you could choose which tools need to be high end and which entry level and know the batteries (at least the higher amp batteries) could be shared between tools. I guy can dream!! Thank you for the comment!!

@CluelessDudesRealToolReviews
@CluelessDudesRealToolReviews 4 ай бұрын
Thank you for the comment. Your guess is correct, since Ryobi and Hart are both manufactured by TTI I decided to go with a Harbor Freight brand instead of testing two similar tools. If I win the lottery then perhaps you will see a few more brands added to my testing. The one thing I would point out if someone is trying to choose between Hart and Ryobi is to look at the size of the tool line and consider does that line make all the 18V/20V tools you will need over the next several years. If not, then ask yourself do you care about battery compatibility between tools. Since they are made by the same company I would guess (and it is a guess) they will have similar performance. OK... let the comments flow about how much better one is vs the other!!! Thank you again for the comment!!

@@CluelessDudesRealToolReviews I agree. I went with ryobi almost 10 years ago with their lawn equipment. Their battery platform is huge. And besides, Hart wasn't around back then, and their stuff is already at Ollie's. Who knows how long Walmart will keep their contracts with TTI. As you know, prior to Hart and Hyper Tough, Walmart used to stock black & decker, and Walmart dropkick them hard and fast.

If you can confirm the battery is really dead and it is not the charger by testing the charger with a known good battery then consider the following at own risk: Use the following at your own risk: Seek help of an electrics professional if using the following.. There are videos where people using a 20 volt battery or a 20 volt power supply to surface charge a 20v tool battery for 5 to 20 seconds. That gives the battery enough of a charge to be seen by the charger. Again, if you follow that routine, do so at your own risk as it might not be safe. Seek help of an electrics professional if doing so to be sure it is safe. The reason it works seem to be (a guess) is that the charger looks to see if the battery has any charge in it. If it is completely dead (like super dead) the charger will assume the battery is defective. That might happen if the batter is not charged for a very long time, that is it looses all of its charge. Even when a tool turns off from a "dead" battery (if the tool and battery work together correctly) the battery still has some charge in it. That helps protect the cells and lets the charger know the battery is good for a charge. So by putting on a small charge on the battery, the charger can see it. Again, do so at own risk as batteries can be fire hazards. Again, seek help of an electrics professional if doing so... Link to another person's video (I cannot say if this is safe, so use information in it at own risk): kzfaq.info/get/bejne/qMWjfcdnvMe3mWQ.html Be 100 percent sure not to get the connections wrong or fire might ensue!!

My charger light stays green no matter if I take the battery off the charger or keep it on the charger. I've never seen it light up red for some odd reason. Does this mean I'm plugging the battery into the charger wrong? It doesn't appears the battery is charging. I've returned the first drill (same brand) because of this and now the newer charger doing the same thing. Now it makes me wonder if I'm charging the battery incorrectly?
@CluelessDudesRealToolReviews
@CluelessDudesRealToolReviews 4 ай бұрын
I cannot say for sure, so the following is what I would do.. or my guess: First I would check the charger itself to see if it tells you what the light colors mean. All of my original factory chargers seems to have a list of what the different color light combinations mean. On some it is black print on a black background, so might need to look carefully. And also check the instruction manual. It should also have the charging light combination key. Be sure the charger goes with the batteries... Make sure the battery is fully seated in the charger. I have a few batteries where I need to push the mechanical release button to get them seated. I have that on a few Hart batteries where I need to hit the release to get them to easily seat on the charger and others where I do not. So try hitting the mechanical release as you put the battery on the charger. (Not needed as far as I know with HyperTough, but I am not sure what brand you have) Side Note: Never mix and match chargers and batteries even if they physically fit (Example: some barrel connector chargers) unless you have the proper skills and knowledge to be safe. Otherwise "bad things" such as very hard to extinguish fires might occur, especially if using certain off brand or no-name batteries that might have skimped on internal fuses. Again, the above is just my best guess and not an authoritative answer. Use at own risk.

So I ended up going the route of Milwaukee M18 and after seeing this video, I'm glad I did. I'm not a professional, just a homeowner who occasionally does odd jobs for people, but in the 3 years of owning my drill I have used it to: drill holes through multiple 2x4s with a 3/4"x17inch auger bit, drilled about 50 holes with a speed bit of some size most of which were done on a single 2 amp hour battery change, mix concrete, remove rust with a wire brush attachment, and drill 1/2 or 3/8 inch holes in concrete with the hammer drill feature. It's drilled through wood, hardwood, concrete, drywall and metal and while it does definitely look well used, I can confidently say it has never even come close to failing me. The same thing with my impact driver which I used to install 6 inch spax screws as well as loosen lug nuts. If you just need a drill for small tasks around the house then yeah you're probably fine with these 2 and a lot more people probably fall into that category, but if you are doing major renovations I'd suggest spending more on the tools you will need the most. With that being said, my angle grinder, jig saw, shop vac and router are all from harbor freight because I don't use those tools enough to necessitate more expensive ones, although I might want to invest in a cordless angle grinder more for convenience than anything.

Thank you for the comment, it is inline with exactly why I started this channel. The goal of my videos is not only to allow people to see what the tools I review are capable of doing, but also equally importantly, is to show the limitations of the tool. I would NOT recommend either of these two drills to people doing serious remodeling work or deck building...etc. But for most basic residential use, such as putting together certain types of furniture, hanging most planters or picture frames and other basic house hold tasks, these are fine at reasonable prices. I hate to see a person buy a $110 drill just to hang a picture!! If my channel gets super big or I win the lottery I think it would be fun to do a DeWalt vs Milwaukee side by side of each lines smallest and cheapest brushless compact drills.... Both are good, so I suspect for a given price range, they would be similar.... Thank you again for the detailed comment!!!

You make good and fair comparisons, and here are some suggestions to improve (you are already very good at testing) Even though i could tell that they were both brushed, you should include a text that says brushed or brushless in the title or when they are side by side And also on the 1 inch speed bit, i noticed that you tried restarting the run 2 times with the hyper tough compared to the hart's 3 times, even though i saw that the hyper tough struggled, you should still restart the drill process the same amount of times for a fair comparison and if you ever have free time, you could make a testing contraption that allows you to test drills with a set weight which would remove any human error on how much you push on the drill
@CluelessDudesRealToolReviews
@CluelessDudesRealToolReviews 4 ай бұрын
Thank you for the comment and kind words. Yes, the fact that both drills are brushed is shown on the screen and mentioned at about the 21 second mark. However I could present that information is a slightly clearer format going forward. I just looked and I can see most people are watching my videos on a phone and not a computer, so perhaps I need to make the text on the intros a bit bigger... I am old, so I watch on my laptop... I like the idea of a test rig!! Especially if the channel grows and I start testing more powerful drills. I have already shot most of the next two drill videos...... but I might try and build a rig... and do a video on that. Lets see if the channel grows. If it does, then that might be a project I can shoot outdoors when it is warm. Thank you again for the kind words and getting me to look for ways to improve my content!!

Thank you for the comment. My main concern is that people know the charger does that before they buy it. For me it is fine. I put all four batteries on the charger and when I come back the next day they are all charged. For a person working on a job site or in a professional setting, I suspect it would be a problem. The reason (just a wild guess) is that as you increase the amperage of the power supply the cost goes up significantly. If all batteries charged at once then I suspect they would need a power supply (AC to DC converter) that was 4 times as big. This in turn would drive the cost up. But that is just a guess. Thank you again for the comment

Plus if you go to the Walmart website, you can see bundles for vastly different prices than buying things separately. Plus, the prices do seem to change. I see people on ebay selling new tools in the box with the battery and charger removed. They are being clear in the description that they have removed the batteries and charger. So I guess that is a business model for some people, buy the bundles, then sell the items separately. I have bought a few chargers from people doing that. Thank you again for the comment!!
