Whilst under active employment, everyone should instill the discipline to save and invest, best to generate passive income like you said “break off with your company mentally” so when there is a sudden job loss, financially you are in a better position and that reduces the stress level. I also like the FU fund that you mentioned in another video!

Thank you for being so supportive and watching multiple videos of mine. I feel very supported 😁 And yes I 100% agree with you that we actually can create our own version of safety or even freedom if we have the discipline to save and invest. Good luck in building out your own FU fund too!

Thank you for your advice on focusing on the positive with a different perspective - that you have feel grateful what you had a high pay, bec people with lower pay get laid off too , you had the chance to earn that pay; and that the layoff forces you to take a break when you otherwise would have been held ransom by the golden handcuffs.

Really good advice, although I'd suggest a different view to #1. The 1st wave layoffs for our company is ALWAYS performance-based: Poor performers are laid off 1st because doing so eliminates the need to create a 'justification folder' on a worker's poor performance or past rule violations to steel the case for their firing for cause. Secondary or subsequent waves of a layoff are often about projected value relative to the team's needs & new hires/paid interns are often the least integrated & have the least established value. The final wave is the weirdest and echos what 9-to-5 said: This wave can be seemingly randomly selected & unfair. This is because, in our case, there can't be any sense of bias or discrimination for these layoffs, so they can literally make the selection randomly. These are the folks that confuse viewers. What ISN'T random however are the number of layoffs & what orgs or depts or teams that are req'd to layoff those people. The lost headcount is not evenly distributed. There may be teams with 6 lost headcount vs. other teams have just 1. There's many reason for that but that's for another post.

Wow that is really such a deep break down of an analysis. Am I right to guess that you were personally involved in designing and/or implementing a wide scale layoff, either in in house HR or from a redundancy consultancy? Either way, thanks for shedding light on this so more folks can understand and move on.

Uttering the comments of many others, this is an absolutely brilliant YT post my friend. You intelligently synthesized the emotional rollercoaster of being unceremoniously fired and the challenge to pivot and persevere. I've been a business professional for 30+ years, and have been both downsized as well as worked at 2 U.S. firms (in separate decades) that imploded as a result of the largest bankruptcy ever (one is Lehman Brothers). In short, it was not only difficult for many of us to lose our amazing jobs, it was gut-wrenching to watch almost our entire "net worth" evaporate in a matter of days. Now if that wasn't bad enough - to make matters all my close (work) friends are now literally incapable of being a resource to find a new job. Good luck folks

Thank you so much for your support and encouragement! I graduated right after Lehman brothers so I know exactly what you mean. I joined Merrill Lynch right after it was bailed out and acquired by BofA. So many Merrill senior colleagues of mine saw their net worth just disappear. My manager also previously worked 20+ years in Citi and only held Citi shares. When they went from $80 to $0.50, his retirement was basically wiped out. Just curious, which do you think is worse? the Lehman 08 financial crisis or our current cost of living crisis? It's also really tough to see your friends being incapable of finding new work. Some of it is controllable (i.e. get new skills), some are not (i.e. companies preferring younger cheaper labor) All the best to you and your friends in facing what is indeed a challenging moment!

@@9to5MillionaireMindset Thanks for the anecdotal comments. Interesting to see there's some parallel or overlap to our career paths. Your question: "Just curious, which do you think is worse? the Lehman 08 financial crisis or our current cost of living crisis?" Answer: Great question. My opinion. I would say the current (Inflation) crisis is likely much worse, why? Well I think there are multiple factors at play here. --> 1) Excess COVID stimulus | 2) The Current Crisis is Pervasive and Larger | 3) The ERA of Ai 1. It appears to be an existential crisis, in that it permeates all of society, and frankly the entire globe - it obviously is a direct result of draconian measures to "arrest the COVID spread". For the better part of 2 years, the largest economies essentially "grinded the gears" to stop the world from spinning (i.e. economies), and substituted organic GDP with a "cash" printing machine. Ergo creating massive "asset bubbles" (e.g. real estate / stocks / crypto / etc.) and (an) economic catastrophe that has not quite reached its apex. 2. The '08 Financial crisis was a sudden and isolated matter. It was somewhat "self-contained" (to major global financial markets) and quickly remediated. After all there was only ONE major corporate failure - Lehman Bros. Perhaps less than 1/1000 of 1% of the globe was impacted long-term . Whereas the current global Inflation Crisis is insidious, pervasive, more complex and several factors larger. 3. We are in the ERA of Ai. This is unlike any technological transformation the world has ever experienced, because by its very nature, Ai's premise is to replace SWATHS of human thinking and to a capabilities. Moreover, Ai will accelerate the disproportionate concentration of wealth. E.g. - Elon Musk today that TESLA will begin the mass production of Humanoids - - > like WTF right!! From a Labor Market perspective - the advent of Ai is and will be massively consequential for "Service-based" economies such as the U.S., since it's impossible to pivot as the "tech is also pivoting" (acquiring knowledge) concurrently. So what? Well, I would argue, the sign of a vibrant economy is rising "wage rate" above YoY core CPI (inflation). Macro perspective: as we are seeing today, as more companies PERMAENTLY reduce staff due to significant drops in Revenue OR due to Ai driven efficiencies, it will absolutely have a negative significant impact on wages, which will compel governments to engage in deficit spending to provide financial support to the populace. In effect, resorting to principal catalyst that creating the Cost of Living crisis in the first place, "Printing Money". Cheers! </end>

Corporate life is not always GREAT ! REASON: It is because of Mr. Jenkins & Mr. Li !! Mr. Li work for the company for 32-years very reliable & Mr. Jenkins works for the company for 8-months and very smart person - both recognized with GOOD WORK and they both invited to company ‘Annual Recognition Ball’ ( BLACK TIE EVENT ) and soon both given a RECOGNISTION PLAQUES . Mr. Jenkins show up with his Asian Wife and everybody was pleased to seeing his wife as a beautiful woman and she is a Harvard graduate. Mr. Li shows up with his white wife and everybody was SUPRISED and UNPLEASED and gave her an ‘unwelcome’ hard stare and some made derogatory remarks “Perhaps she’s a person from the other side of the track”.

It's crazy right. At one point I realized what I made in 3 months was what most people make in a year (including myself when I first started working). Then I found out my bosses were making well over 1M, and their bosses were making 2-3M or more. You then realize the sky is the limit if you really work hard and play your cards right, but you can also easily slip into a lifestyle of comparing with others and never being satisfied or knowing what is enough.

You're more likely to get laid off if you're a minority. It doesn't matter how intelligent you are or valuable. This is the lesson I learned in Texas where discrimination is more common. Whites make up the majority of the corporate management structure. Many companies look for excuses to terminate employees to avoid paying a severance. Asians get the short end of the deal when recession hits. In most professions and companies, it is cutthroat and being Asian you get that disrespect.
