13 year owner of an E36 M3/4/5 (i.e. sedan) purchased for ) $8k. It’s an amazingly reliable car and does everything well. I drive this daily and drive it very spiritedly. I’ve kept everything OEM. During these years car has required $12k in maintenance. Don’t let that scare you though. This includes: tires, brakes, clutch, suspension, control arms, AC refresh, cooling system overhaul, 3 batteries, valve cover gaskets, tie rods, various rubber seals and trim, shifter lever refresh, headliner, door lock actuators, window regulators, and some minor upgrades like exhaust and radio. All in all nothing out of the ordinary just basic old car maintenance. I did all of the work myself. Had I paid someone to do this work, the cost would have easily exceeded $22k.

I do think a lot of the people that complain the SMG is rough to drive are using it in auto mode. In manual mode and understand its a manual at its root and drive it that way, it’s smooth

Great job josh 👍👍👍👍👍👍 What did you do for the whole engine refresh ie New gaskets, seals, head gasket, etc Did you get the injectors serviced or buy new ones etc etc Can you list everything you did on the M30b35 engine Please As I will asking my mechanic to do. This on my engine over the winter months And he's not familiar with the M30 block, he's a ford guy

The biggest issue is that the manual in the e46 M3 is one of the worst transmissions in a sports car. It ruins the experience 💯. It’s rubbery and notchy plus gates aren’t defined. You get to spend 1000 dollars on a bandaid short shifter that makes it a slightly less shitty experience. Who would purposely convert an SMG car to a manual needs mental help and needs to learn that the ape men knuckle dragging “manuals only” crowd are the worst people and ruin the car world.

@@m3nameisjosh464 I just converted my 540i last week. Quite a transformation! I have a 3.45 diff which I feel is a bit short, 1st becomes a bit useless, interesting how yours goes with the 2.93, definitely longer gearing. I'm thinking 3.15 is the way to go, but $$$ haha

I love my open diff slushy 540i but I know if it had the 3.15 LSD and 6 speed I'd enjoy it too much and end up either stacking it or getting busted by the cops. I live in a nanny state that makes hundreds of millions of dollars a year off speed cameras 😢

@@m3nameisjosh464 meh. Its ok. Body is bit tired, bit rust on usual door areas. Underneath and floors are ok tho. I think 535 LSD may fit there as well. See if you can compare both 540 and 535 diffs.

12:10 dudes tweakin . 420g is the best bmw manual transmission . Especially with a short shifter .

ZF 310z is actually the best. 420g is notchy and they always shift kinda badly when cold.

@@greebj that’s less because of it being a good transmission and more so because it was the only manual that would bolt up to the M60/M62/S62 (aside from the relatively uncommon V8 version of the ZF 310z).

Good debating here guys. I stand by Danny and say Zf5 is in fact the best transmission ever. However I really like this 420G, at least in this car with this shifter it feels great
