Hi, excelent video, need to do this job as we speak and the garage is telling they are fully book till end august!! can I ask you how long can this job take if all goes exactly as expected? from the video it just look sooo easy!
@ThatBaldwinLife3 күн бұрын
I can have it done in less than three hours if I'm pushing it. Easily in one day. Just have the right tools available. Good jack for the transmission. Torque wrench. Puller for pilot bearing. Correct 8mm triple square bit for CV joint bolts. Sometimes the hardest part is lining the transmission and engine up and getting the input shaft aligned with the clutch splines. Just take your time and don't force it. One thing to pay attention to is when you remove the flywheel to replace the pilot bearing, assure the shims behind the flywheel are not disturbed. There are a few shims and on top (facing you) is the thrust shim. If they fall out/down, place them back in that order and put a little wheel bearing grease on them so they do not fall or move during the flywheel install. Those shims along with the flywheel torque set your crankshaft end play. Very important. nate

Dude this was one of the first things I bought when I got the van. With the amount of tinkering I KNEW I was about to do back there, it was only a matter of time before I accidentally sliced a line while taking off the manifold, or putting a new alternator in and pinching the inlet or YOU GET IT 😅. Thankfully nothing has happened and we’ve been safe as can be, with piece of mind.

As always, thank you for the content you produce! I added this kit to my Bostig converted 87 and it activated on the first drive up a local canyon with no fire present and no overheating issue. My Bostig can hit cylinder head temps of 220 to 240 degrees on long steep climbs here in Utah but has never overheated, drops back to lower temps quickly and in regular driving stays between 175 and 205 degrees so the system is working as intended. The entire cooling system has been upgraded and serviced with new 50/50 coolant mix. The vendor I purchased the system from would not offer a refund, and I don't blame them, but I think you should be very sure of the temps your engine bay experiences before adding this system because I did not realize it activates at such low temps, under 250 degrees. My fault for not doing my research but this system is not an option for me and I really wish it was.
@ThatBaldwinLife13 күн бұрын
Wow, that is nuts. We have an oil temp gauge in the van and just the stock water temp but out WBX doesn't usually run very hot. I will use the infrared temp gun to check some temps on our next hot, long climb though. Thanks for the info on this, it is great to know! nate

When you say to reverse the process to install, I’m thinking about the CV joints. The torque should be 33 foot pounds if I am correct. Do you clean the bolts up really good and use thread lock? The bolts are easy to clean. It’s the threads that I struggle with.
@drolley40117 күн бұрын
By the way, great video! I hope you make many more.

Yes, 33 ft lbs is right. I just make sure the bolt threads are clean and torque down then recheck torque in a hundred miles or so.

when you are smacking in the outer bearing using an old race are you not smacking the inner part of the new bearing? My understanding was that doing that is a no no
@ThatBaldwinLife19 күн бұрын
No, using the outer race of the bearing only transfers the impact to the outer race of the new bearing. The bearings are not touched during this install. Do not hit or press on the inner race or bearings during install! Once the outer bearing depth is set, use the old inner race to set the new inner race down to touch the bearing spacer. Again, the impact is only placed on the floating inner race, not the bearings. As you tighten the axle nut, it transfers pressure from the nut->outer bearing inner race->spacer->inner bearing inner race->back of the axle shaft. Hope that makes sense. nate

Hey thanks for reaching out. Putting in a non WBX engine in the Vanagon will be an expensive endeavor if you have a qualified shop do the work. It is a lot of work. Upgrading your current 1.9L to a 2.1L or 2.2L from GoWesty would be the cheapest option but you would still want the 1986 and up Digifant engine control system to run that engine. Start by asking people on TheSamba who is a reputable mechanic in your area. Good luck! nate

Totally understand the perceived overkill on tools and parts! I'm right there with you. With my 67 Westy, I always carried an extra generator belt, clutch cable, oil, limited specific sockets, and flat blade screwdriver. But now that I drive a 27-year-old Mitsubishi Delica, I have a whole box of metric tools (very extensive), and gobs of other tools, and a whole box of OEM spare parts.
@ThatBaldwinLife2 ай бұрын
If we just stuck with paved roads that had cell service and camped in campgrounds, we wouldn't carry as many parts and tools. But since we like to venture far off into nowhere, it is comforting that we feel we can fix most things that might go wrong. Nice grab on the Delica, great vans! nate
