There is more to "safety" then crime when traveling internationally. You must consider the government as well. The argument you made for Iran didn't address the safety risk of being arrested by the police for any number or reasons including fabricated ones. This happens in both the most corrupt or most authoritarian countries fairly often.

5:18- True 'it helps to know Spanish' in Barcelona but you can go WAY further if you learn a few Catalan phrases before visiting there! Catalan is actually closer to French Provencal than Castilian Spanish.
