Very impressive. Drone has great low light capability from my opinion. June 25/26 and dressed for the arctic?

Thanks Michael, the display was so bright I reckoned it was worth trying drone video and it done a superb job, I ended up using it for much of the video going through three full batteries (each lasts under 40 mins). The four thirds sensor on the Mavic 3 really comes into its own for events like this. Yes had the coat on, we got a couple of 20c days and one day peaked at 24C, but the night of the NLCs was cool, slightly NWly breeze and Lough Fea is on high ground and exposed, the area is well known for its exceptional cold temps more than anywhere else in winter, a good place for finding icicles in the winter months. Unfortunately all of June and now half of July has/is looking stable with jet stream to the south so we are getting cooler air from north and unsettled in an annoying way and storm starved. In fact, this was the only fully clear night in a while so to get this NLC display was a miracle.

Excellent footage Martin, first class - probably the best display I have seen in the decade since I first photographed the NLCs. Very touching that you dedicated the video to Alyn Wallace, he was in my thoughts as I stood watching that awesome NLC display, he would have loved it.

Thanks for watching and interesting Alyn was in your thoughts that night too, I know he would have loved this display based on his previous videos were he clearly appreciates the beauty and photogenic nature of NLCs. Definitely my 2nd best display since 2009, but its very close to my number 1, the scales could go either way.

Unique place . Very atmospheric when I visited. Hard to see much now that all the foliage is out , best to check it out in winter or early spring when the cherry blossoms are in bloom. Imo the name " Kings Stables" is irrelevant, a story made up by Christian scribes to disguise the importance of this "Pagan" sacred pool. Nice shots Martin.👍🍀

@asteroid42531mckenna
@asteroid42531mckenna 26 күн бұрын
You will know them when you see them Don, especially if its a striking display. Normal clouds at night will look dark as they are not lit by the sun, even areas with LP with have the classic orange LP glow under the clouds. NLCs glow from reflected sunlight while normal weather clouds are in darkness, mainly because NLCs are 83km high, highest clouds on earth, their structure is quite distinct, at times sharp and the best displays have an alien look to them, to top this off they have a nice silvery blue colour often described as electric blue. Once you see a good display you will be able to spot them easier next time.

Yes, I'm a structure person and my mate uses a lighting trigger on his DSLR so he likes to be in dry air outside the core too to try for c-gs, hopefully with structure. Also if we drove anymore in that direction we would have descended into valleys and the mountains would block all view of the base, in total it rained over the same area for 5 hours causing flash flooding and a landslide in Donegal.
