8:46 - just curious, why you only take 3 coins or make a buy - why never reserve a card? I feel like it's a solid base strategy BUT let's assume this scenario: you've got 8 or 9 coins. The only buyable card is really bad value for money. There's also a card on the board which would give you 1-2 points and you could buy it if you just had a gold coin. In that case I'd get the urge to reserve that card.
@Klanosk3
@Klanosk3 3 жыл бұрын
In a scenario like that, sure, depart from the rule, use everything at your disposal. In my own play I certainly use the yellow coin/reserve a card action a lot, but it's mostly when you're the object of defensive moves by other players. The idea in this video is to simplify the game and be good for first-timers or people who want to focus on the conversation rather than bothering too hard about the strategy portion of the game. First timers shouldn't be targeted like that, and this gives a simple scaffold for starting to plan ahead.

I've been trying this strategy in a 4 player game and it fails me most of the time. The 3 other players are using the guild/nobles strategy where they grab and hold onto a lot of the coins plus buying cards easily on the green tier. This is despite the playing field contains a lot of the (2-4-1) 2 points cards + (5 or 6) 2 or 3 points cards which is why i attempted this strategy as you suggested. I did tried to be smart and use gold coins to reserve certain cards but i can only do it for so long (i can have max 3 reserve cards). Plus reserving 3 cards with 3 gold coins means i can only grab up to 7 colour coins. So in the end i felt at certain rounds i had no choice but to spend my coins to buy green tier cards & the guild/noble players eventually outpaced me as later in the game they all manage to get free green tier cards. Under these extreme heavy defence scenarios what other tactics/strategies would you recommend to combact that? ... because you said this strategy was designed to defeat the guilds/nobles but i tried a few times and it didn't work despite the playing field having the good cards for a yellow strategy
@Klanosk3
@Klanosk3 3 жыл бұрын
If everyone is going guild/nobles with heavy coin defense, it just kinda makes the game slow down for everyone, so I'd buy one or two green cards at the beginning to enable the first yellow card buy. Coin defense as a whole group does a lot to neutralize the more vertical strategies, so you should be ahead on pacing vs the other players. I wouldn't be afraid to spend the yellow chips - they're there to spend. You can also grab the 1 point cards at the green level when they're available. Also, don't reserve cards that you don't have a pathway to buying, even if they're 'good', because that can get you into the situation you described- where there's no coins available and your hand is full and you can't afford anything. If the defense isn't too strong, I like opening by buying one of the 4-2-1 cards by taking three coins three times and yellowing something to get the 4th of the color, which can either be the card you're saving for or whatever you want next, if you see that no one else is going for it/paying attention to you. Best of luck!

Interesting. This will make me think . The most efficient way for me is to buy 2nd row cards exclusively , build an engine with them, maybe get one level one card, don't even try for nobles. Or buy just level one cards and try for all three nobles. AND look at ladders to get cards , maybe a level three card ( for 5points). Also reserve the 5 point cards. Keep as many coins as you can to buy but buy cards you already have card colours with. Try not to reserve much. Also look at what your opponents are doing and try to block if necessary. Look at all the colours on the board- all white - then buy white cards.

I dont get what vertical strategie means. What does this Mean? I think my English is not good enough to understand what you Mean with this
@Klanosk3
@Klanosk3 3 жыл бұрын
You could use 'Wide' to describe a 'horizontal' and 'Tall' to describe 'vertical'. 'Vertical' is quickly reaching up to the more expensive cards, while a 'Wide' strategy builds a strong economic base instead.

Referring to both level-2 cards and gold gems as "yellow" can be slightly confusing, as can "green/blue cards" being both card colors and card levels. I also don't know why you would say "yellowing" cards instead of "reserving."

I think it's also wise for people to keep in mind that you have to be able to adapt mid game or game to game. In the end, this is still a card game and you are at the random ass mercy of the cards and also of players swiping cards or coins from you either as defense against you or because they legitimately need the card/coin. Don't shoot yourself in the foot because you stagnated sticking to a strategy that was no longer viable due to the way the cards fell and/or how your opponent(s) reacted to the situation at hand.

What strategies from your videos do you find work for 2, 3, 4, and 5 player games?

I like the more "aggressive" strategies for 2 player games, one of the vertical options or the 'all yellows' strategy. For larger games playing I prefer playing defensively, so I like the nobles strategy, or the 'beginner' strategy of just taking the best card available and having the next buy in mind, since the card turnover is much higher. Have fun!

All of the Splendor strategy videos are very good! My question would be how to adapt or choose them in a 2 vs 3-4 player games? I find 2 player game are significantly different from 3-4 player games. For example, vertical strategy is almost impossible due to the fact that there is only 4 gem of each other to start. Thanks, great video.
@Klanosk3
@Klanosk3 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I actually find that the vertical strategy is even more effective in 2 -player, with some adaptations. It's important, however, that there are the 7&3-cost 5-pointers or the 7-cost 4-pointers are available at the Blue level in the initial card set, since there isn't as much turnover from other players buying cards. In my games, I'm frequently the target of defensive play by all the other players, who take coins from the piles I need to prevent me from going up to the next card even if I have it reserved in my hand, and most players hold more than one coin, so the reduction in players normally makes the vertical strategy easier for me, even with the smaller coin pool. That said, there are some adjustments that I make when playing just two players. -Since it's just the two of you, defense is easier to make worthwhile and easier to keep track of. Know what they're up to, and if you can get a really good block go for it. The best scenario is where you can see what card they are going for, and the chips they have can't buy any of the other cards in the set. One block of this type is typically decisive, since it can set the opponent back two or three turns. -Use yellow-chips more frequently to make up for the coin pool, since they are not changed by the reduction in players. If a 7-cost 4-point card is your target, you could have a ladder like this: buy two green-level cards in that color, get two coins of the color you're going for, and 3 yellow coins. To open up space in my hand to get the vertical yellows I need, sometimes I'll reserve the green level cards with yellow coins, but then buy them without spending the yellow coins. That way, after you buy the two green-level cards and the 4-pointer, you'll have an empty hand and be ready to go again. -In my experience, two-player games have less turns overall than multi-player games, and so the guild strategy almost never has time to take shape, because it just requires too many buys to get going. I frequently end games with 8-9 cards total in two-player games (sometimes as few as 5-6 total cards, with three blue cards and one or two points from the green or yellow levels) and would recommend avoiding the guilds. Finally, the initial card set is more important in two-player games since less turnover occurs. Because of this, the one-and-one strategy from the foundations video (kzfaq.info/get/bejne/pZaKmb2jtsmZZYk.html) is a good option because it responds to the actual choices you have, rather than counting on the cards you need to come up as buys are made. Good luck and have fun!
