The quickest path to victory in Splendor relies on understanding the color costs in the mid-game. This video looks at the underlying patterns in card costs to explain how to execute a strict vertical strategy.

Thanks for your video showing the Green/Blue possibility and how it differs from other colors. I was not aware of that fact before. I had mainly heard of the "high tier" and "engine building" strategies.

All of the Splendor strategy videos are very good! My question would be how to adapt or choose them in a 2 vs 3-4 player games? I find 2 player game are significantly different from 3-4 player games. For example, vertical strategy is almost impossible due to the fact that there is only 4 gem of each other to start. Thanks, great video.

Thanks! I actually find that the vertical strategy is even more effective in 2 -player, with some adaptations. It's important, however, that there are the 7&3-cost 5-pointers or the 7-cost 4-pointers are available at the Blue level in the initial card set, since there isn't as much turnover from other players buying cards. In my games, I'm frequently the target of defensive play by all the other players, who take coins from the piles I need to prevent me from going up to the next card even if I have it reserved in my hand, and most players hold more than one coin, so the reduction in players normally makes the vertical strategy easier for me, even with the smaller coin pool. That said, there are some adjustments that I make when playing just two players. -Since it's just the two of you, defense is easier to make worthwhile and easier to keep track of. Know what they're up to, and if you can get a really good block go for it. The best scenario is where you can see what card they are going for, and the chips they have can't buy any of the other cards in the set. One block of this type is typically decisive, since it can set the opponent back two or three turns. -Use yellow-chips more frequently to make up for the coin pool, since they are not changed by the reduction in players. If a 7-cost 4-point card is your target, you could have a ladder like this: buy two green-level cards in that color, get two coins of the color you're going for, and 3 yellow coins. To open up space in my hand to get the vertical yellows I need, sometimes I'll reserve the green level cards with yellow coins, but then buy them without spending the yellow coins. That way, after you buy the two green-level cards and the 4-pointer, you'll have an empty hand and be ready to go again. -In my experience, two-player games have less turns overall than multi-player games, and so the guild strategy almost never has time to take shape, because it just requires too many buys to get going. I frequently end games with 8-9 cards total in two-player games (sometimes as few as 5-6 total cards, with three blue cards and one or two points from the green or yellow levels) and would recommend avoiding the guilds. Finally, the initial card set is more important in two-player games since less turnover occurs. Because of this, the one-and-one strategy from the foundations video (kzfaq.info/get/bejne/pZaKmb2jtsmZZYk.html) is a good option because it responds to the actual choices you have, rather than counting on the cards you need to come up as buys are made. Good luck and have fun!

Interesting. This will make me think . The most efficient way for me is to buy 2nd row cards exclusively , build an engine with them, maybe get one level one card, don't even try for nobles. Or buy just level one cards and try for all three nobles. AND look at ladders to get cards , maybe a level three card ( for 5points). Also reserve the 5 point cards. Keep as many coins as you can to buy but buy cards you already have card colours with. Try not to reserve much. Also look at what your opponents are doing and try to block if necessary. Look at all the colours on the board- all white - then buy white cards.

I honestly thought that cards in Splendor are symmetric. Wow.
