@@lifeafterourloss I’m repairing a 66 same color. Odd question would you consider selling your fenders? I would also include a pair of Ford NOS ones as well. I have a very unique 1966 and I’m hunting for original paint fenders

Komatsu is older than cat,,,,who's the clone now...
@lifeafterourloss

No denying that. However they didn't enter the US heavy equipment Market until 1967. Benjamin Holt also had the first patent on a crawler tractor in 1890. Along with CL best, they were the founding companies that merged into caterpillar so that predates Komatsu. But I could be wrong either way. I ran Komatsu Equipment as well and have no complaints.

Actually if anything cat is a clone of komatsu,,,Being that komatsu is around longer than cat,,,,,,Catapiller was founded in 1925,,,,,Komatsu was founded in 1921,,,Cat is the biggest construction machine manufacturer in the world,,,,But in the country with the biggest economy on earth,,,,That being china ,,,,,,komatsu is king,,,,Also the third largest economy on earth ,,,,India,,,,,,komatsu is king,,,And in Japan,,,

Very true. I suppose I was speaking in relative terms because Komatsu didn't enter the US heavy equipment Market until 1967. 👍

If you use CAT brand paint you don't need to prime and all you need is a little enamel thinner. You would get better results if you used a 2 or 3 gallon paint pot.

I’ve got an engine identical to that one. The grease cups only provide lubrication to the babbitt bearings on the crankshaft and connecting rod. The gears and sliding or rotating parts need to be oiled separately. The block would usually crack when somebody forgot to drain the water, having fully intended on running the engine again before it froze but then got sidetracked doing other things and bingo…it was frozen when they got back to it. Rainwater would accumulate in the hopper and do the same thing if the engine was left outside and not covered. The 3 hp wouldn’t power a threshing machine but was usually used to turn a Pumpjack on a water well or to run a line shaft in a small farm shop or a small buzz-saw and other low horsepower applications. I’ve got a photo of my grandfather and his two brothers using a buzz-saw with two McCormick Deering engines driving it at the same time. The bigger engines were so cottonpicking heavy that many people went with two smaller ones instead. I’ve got a 6 hp McCormick and it’s a beast. My 6 hp Witte is a heavy one too but not like the McCormick. Yours will be a good engine once you get it to run. One more suggestion if you have a crank for this engine. Pound a nail in a wall and hang it up there for display only. I learned that the hard way when the crank gets pushed off as the engine fires. I’d been really cranking hard and the swivel handle allowed the opposite end of the crank to swing around and get between the spokes of the flywheel. The crank handle broke instantly but many bad things could have happened instead. My hand didn’t end up there, I didn’t get the crank in the teeth, things like that. My crank is now brazed and hanging on display.

The folks that were the original owners of this engine were good family friends of ours. I'm not sure why I thought they used it for a thrashing machine but they had a thrashing business. My dad tells me that they actually did use this as you mentioned above for a water well pump. Appreciate the advice stories and knowledge have these amazing engines. 👍
