I just now started this course, so my apologies if you answer this sometime soon. It appears that the Logikey keyers are out of production and hard to find. Any suggestions for reasonable alternatives that are easily obtained?

@@GarySchiltz this might be a good video for me to record. There are a number of good options out there. Sometimes you can find these on eBay, or qth.com, but another favorite of mine is the win keyer
@GarySchiltz6 сағат бұрын
@@k9kj Thanks, I'll check out building a WinKeyer or similar kit. Meanwhile, it looks like your course mainly emphasizes receiving over sending anyway, so I'll work on that while deciding what to get for a keyer. BTW, I'm retired and have some time on my hands these days. I got my General class FCC license years ago and have kept it active, but my CW skills have gotten very rusty through disuse, so I'm just going to start from the ground up. Once I'm comfortable enough, I will get my reciprocal license here in Ecuador where I retired to, and will probably start with CW QRP. I appreciate your course. '73 de W5PAZ (/HC1 eventually).

@@k9kj I bought the switch box. Its meant for headphones switching but works perfectly for the keys. When I used the internal meter I just had the straight key wired across the paddle but I don't like doing that with the external keyer. I was using the straight key today working an S51 station who must have been a learner. Conditions poor though.

@@k9kj As to new Ops being a bit shy or intimated, weren't we all ? Obviously, in my opinion, it seems we've lost the Elmer's of old, now replaced by the internet and long hours of sitting in front of a computer trying to memorize a string of answers ! Look at the number of Extra Class Operators ! It's like someone spilled a bag of, " Extra " seeds, and they have sprung up everywhere ! Disturbing because many have no practical app, and I have heard conversations where an Extra couldn't answer a question a Novice would know ! Sadly too, is the choice I guess the Feds made, to encroach upon what I knew to be the Novice CW portion of 40 meters, by allowing Phone Ops there ! I like many, back in the day, cut our teeth there with literally Hundreds of hours of practice, and QSO's ! My Radio room once was adorned with QSL cards ceiling to floor, wall to wall QSL cards, most unsolicited ! That's just the way it was ! We've lost a lot with this newfangled technology, to say the least ! Sorry if I'm preaching to the choir ! I just began to get active on HF, after several years away handling Life. And getting back on CW has been an absolute Joy ! ( And I'm running QRP ! ) I literally felt like a kid having my first CW QSO ! And continue to grin from ear to ear, with each contact ! Not especially excited where I am age wise, but glad I got in when I did ! Some 44 years now ! Too, I think many lack the true passion we once shared for all things Radio . And I'm happy to say after much prodding, I recently motivated a friend to get back on the Air, and he thanked me the other day, for helping him regain his interest, as he too is having a Ball ! Guess you can't have everything, but it doesn't get any better than that ! .... .. ! '73 👍😉 Oh ....and don't get me started on the Digital guys taking over the QRP Frequency of 7.040 ! 🫲😳🫴

I know I would love to say ATAS is a good antenna, but I would be doing ham community a disservice if I said it was better than the Tarheel. Tarheel is much better built antenna that will last a very long time. I actually had ATAS, currently own Tarheel and Diamond SD330. I can honestly say, I am loving the Tarheel by a wide margin.

It's been quite a while since I did CW, but if I remember right, to send a Q, I would have: 1-Hold the dah paddle until the second dah starts; 2-Let go of the dah paddle and hold the dit paddle; 3-When the dit starts sounding, hold the dah paddle until the dah starts sounding; 4-Let go of the dah. I think in Iambic A, you were holding the dah paddle even after the second dah sounded and you had pressed the dit paddle. I can't even remember what rig I was using (probably my father in law's - N0LO SK - Ten-Tec Omni V). But the muscle memory convinces me this is how I always did it even though my cerebral memory is getting a little weaker LOL. I wonder if what I did would be considered A or B? 73 de Gary, W5PAZ

The spacing of the dits and dahs are important, too. If E and T are put too close together, you might think it’s an A, or T then E too close, you might think it’s an N. I would have spelled NATE - -./.-/-/.

Is the Vibroflex Co. still a thing? They used to have a lifetime guarantee. Or maybe they called it a warranty? Anyway, used to be you could send it back to them, and they would renew it, clean and polish it. Replace any broken or missing parts. And then they'd ship it back.
