Parker was an only child like Sherlock and as a puppy, meal time was much the same. He took his time, would take a bite away from the bowl to chew it and come back for more. Now, especially since we have MJ, he wastes no time in getting his dinner eaten. MJ was 1 of 4 in her litter and she has always scarfed her food down in the sense that if she didn't another dog would. I've had to get her a slow feeder to make her take a bit of time. Also feeding them in their crates has very slowly taught her that her dinner is hers. eta: I love that you use very deliberate words to teach Sherlock what to expect to happen next.

My cavalier puppy was extremely picky until we got him neutered around two years old. He would only eat if handfed, and even then at best only five days a week. We tried all different types and brands of kibble and wet food to no avail. People food was always acceptable, however. It was stressful worrying about him when he was growing but he had tons of energy and gained weight thankfully. I don't know what his deal was.

My Blenheim Cavalier is 6 months old now, and I have a couple of questions that I would be so appreciative if you could answer! (1) Our puppy is still eating poop (his and our elderly Chihuahua's). He will not be deterred and goes after it so quickly, we cannot stop him! Will he likely grow out of this behavior? (2) What size crate do you use for your adult Cavaliers? (3) Our Blenheim's white fur on his paws are turning reddish. Do you know what causes this? He is eating Fromm's Gold Puppy. Thank you so much!!

Regarding conformation to breed standard - I'm coming across a lot of other "cavaliers" in my area with longer muzzles (like at least 4+ inches long). The owners are confused as to why my Ernie's muzzle is so "short". I don't usually say anything, but in my head I am wondering if these people are patronizing amateur backyard breeders or puppy mills. They don't look like mixed breeds as far as I can tell, but who knows.

Thank you for your response! I suspect my puppy is also watching your videos and coming up with workarounds. We did the cardboard box in the crate to make it smaller, and she ripped the box to shreds. I've found she will poop in the middle of the crate and lie down in it and not seem to mind. She also never barks or indicates she needs to go out when she's in the crate. She also poops in the house right by my feet immediately after we've gone outside. If I try to pick her up when I see it's about to happen, she poops while I'm walking to the door leaving a trail of mess. Do you think it's worth trying to hire a trainer? She seems to be improving as she gets older, but we are still not 100%. Thank you so much!!!

Great "ask the breeder" video. You are absolutely correct about the puppy choosing you! We had decided to bring a second Cavalier into our family - I had researched the breeder (member of Cavalier Club of AZ association) had asked the all-important health questions & was at the breeder's home. She had a 9-month old little boy who she had kept thinking to show him -however, lucky for us, he had a grown a bit too long for show standards. I asked which puppy he was and she said, "he's the one sitting in your lap!" When we went to pick up our older Cavalier when he was a puppy (who also had waddled over & sat in my lap) I asked my son is this the puppy to take home? My son replied, "the wand chooses the wizard, Harry Potter, the wand chooses the wizard!".

I wanted to take a moment to address the question about house training. I'll start by asking you some questions! You mentioned the dog is having issues with pooping in the house. Does he (or she, sorry I don't remember if you mentioned your dog's gender, so I'll just say "he"--very sexist of me) also have issues with peeing in the house? If he doesn't, that takes my brain to a whole other place than if he does. If he just has issues with one mode of elimination in the house (and not the other), that takes my brain down the road of making this being a medical issue (rather than a "real" house training issue) a little more likely. Which brings me to my next question. You're a "doctor", are you a vet? If so, sorry for the next piece of advice. But there can be medical issues that make a dog "mess up" on house training. Those will need to be ruled out and I like to rule them out sooner rather than later. So if he's doing well with peeing, but not pooping, I'd advise a trip to the vet to rule out any medical issues. You don't mention your dog's breed. Small dogs are, without a doubt, more difficult to house train than larger dogs. There have been a number of theories proposed as to why this is so, but it boils down to no one really knows. And even among small breeds, some breeds are known as especially difficult to house train. If you have a small dog or one of the more difficult dogs, you'll have to be a bit more patient. Next question, how are you cleaning up the mess? An enzymatic cleaner is the best thing to use (something like Nature's Miracle). If you're using an ammonia-based cleaner, you're shooting yourself in the foot (as that will attract the dog to mess there). How do you react when you see a mess that's already there (and you don't know how long it's been there)? How do you react when you catch him in the act? It's very natural and normal to yell "Hey, STOP IT!!!!!" or "hey, you pooped in the house!!!!!!". Unfortunately, while that's very normal and understandable, it's the wrong reaction! Especially if the mess is already there and the dog doesn't understand why you're yelling at and punishing him. It's best to just curse under your breath, clean it up with an enzymatic cleaner, and chalk that one up to YOUR mistake (yes your mistake--you weren't supervising your puppy). Charlie is correct--supervision is key! A crate can be an invaluable tool. However, a word of warning about crates. Crates are a tool, not a baby-sitter and not a trainer. I am NOT a proponent of leaving dogs (especially puppies) in crates for long periods of time. That can cause all manner of serious problems. I'm a bigger fan of the tethering system. Where you go, your puppy goes. You go to the bathroom, your puppy goes to the bathroom. You go to the kitchen to get a drink, you puppy goes to the kitchen. The puppy is literally tied or tethered to you. Charlie asked the crate's size. That is an important issue. You want a crate large enough to be comfortable (large enough so the dog can "stretch out" in it), but not so large that he is "okay" with gong to the bathroom in it). I recommend the crate only when you just cannot watch your puppy. Are you on a regular schedule? In other words, do you feed at a consistent time, take the puppy out at a consistent time, take the puppy out for a walk at a consistent time? etc. Having a "set schedule" can help in house training. A good tip to remember is that a dog is much less likely to pee or poop if they're moving (or if you have a small dog, if you're carrying them). So if you see something you "think" looks like he may be getting ready to relieve himself, grab a treat and say "let's go" and get him outside. If he's walking outside, he's less likely to pee or poop. Exercise can also have the "opposite" effect--it can get the "system" all excited and make it more likely the dog will have to "go", so a nice walk can often "encourage" the dog to go outside. How often are you taking the puppy outside? At 4 1/2 months, I'd recommend at least every 2 hours (more often for some dogs). You can't expect a dog that young to "hold it" for 8 or more hours. So if you're gone at work, you'll need to arrange to come home at lunch or have someone come over to take the puppy out at least once while you're gone. Some people will recommend taking the dog out on a leash and walking them around until they "do their duty" (expecting to stay out with the puppy at least 30 minutes). There's nothing wrong with that--except that most people don't want to do that at 2 am!! But that can be very effective in house training! How do react when the dog is "successful"? If your puppy "gets it right" and pees or poops outside, they should get a yummy treat (keep them on your person at all times when you have a young puppy) and lot of praise and petting. Do not be ashamed of making a fool of yourself. In fact, that is a huge motivator for some dogs. I have a little boy who likes treats "okay", but his best reward is having "mom" jump up and down, saying stuff like "He's the man, what a good boy, you're so smart, aren't you something, etc.) in a high squeaky voice. I can a few "looks" when I do that in public! I feel ridiculous, but it's my baby's "best reward", so he gets it. Where did you get your puppy? Dogs (and cats, for that matter) will develop a preference for one "substrate" (surface) or another. Dogs that come from shelters have become "used to" peeing and pooping on a hard surface, as they really don't have access to "outside" and "grass" to go to the bathroom on. Same for puppy mill puppies and puppies from breeders who don't try to house train the puppy (like good breeders--like Charlie--do). It can be difficult to break that "habit" and preference. It can be done, certainly, but requires a bit more patience. Another tip that some people are willing to do and others aren't, is to feed your dog in the location that they poop or pee in the house. If he poops in the bedroom, clean it up with an enzymatic cleaner, and next meal, he eats right by or on the spot where he pooped. It is important that you do NOT "correct" or "punish" your puppy for his mistakes. This will result in a lot of negative consequences and can make the problem worse!!!! If you're really "into" learning about house training issues, there's a little book called "Hard to Housetrain" by Peggy O. Swager you can find on Amazon for under $20. That has more information than you probably want, but it's a good resource. Best of luck.

Lots of good advice here! I'm no expert, just raised a cavalier puppy from ten weeks a couple of years ago. I ignored my breeder's advice to stay quiet other than say "go potty" when taking him out and praised my boy liberally. He was so eager to please that just catching him going in the right place a few times and acting like he was the best puppy ever made him want to repeat it. I also only used a crate for naps and bedtime, maybe up until 5 months. I gated off the kitchen and kept him in there when awake to make cleanups easier. Frequent potty breaks once he understood where I wanted him to go was key. Before and after a nap. Before a play session. 15 mins into a play session. After a play session. After eating and drinking. Just basically after doing anything! More often than you'd think was necessary.

A popular UK CKCS in shows/social media was diagnosed with this and the owner said they would not be having any litters. With how expensive puppies are now and how available specific tests are, it's a matter of finding responsible breeders who carry out the required tests for the breed issues on both parents. Should those tests prove positive, that they do not continue that line for the sake of making money.
