Fascinating. Whst do windmill owners do if there is a wind storm? Is there a brake or some way to protect the windmill?

Ive acquired an old property that had a school house and homestead on it 100+ years ago. It looks like someone re-did the well at some point in the last 60 years. There is 6" Casing pipe going down 150'. I'd like to install a windmill to pull water up and keep a trickle going into a pond, and aerate the water. I live in KY, on top of a ridge located in the knobs region. I get a very steady prevailing wind direction, funneled up a hollar to my house and this old well. How big of a windmill should I get? Could a homebuilt windmill with a regular hand pump pull a trickle of water up? I don't want to spend a fortune, as I am a homesteader, but do want a reliable system.

Could I use a old Ford Granny gear manual tansmission as a windmill gearbox? Looking to design and build my own windmill for a secondary well I am re-comissioning. I can't stomach the thought of spending $5000+ for a windmill. So, looking to self build. Im a mechanical design engineer in the Material Handling industry with access to CAD. So I would just layout the entire design and build it. Sourcing a windmill gearbox without paying a fortune seems like a losing battle. Ideally want to build the entire thing for no more than $1500.

If I have 3 fins that are half broke on opposite sections. Am I able to replace that one fin? And keep the others ? Can't seem to find any videos pertained to my question. Thank you

Very interesting. But everywhere the description is wrong? A mill grinds corn therefore a windmill. If when the blades turn and pump water it is a wind driven pump!

I have memories of replacing the leather seals of my windpump in the dark so we have household water that night. Removing the pipe from the borehole was not so much fun!

Excellent video. I was curious as to how the rotation was converted to linear movement in these ubiquitous machines. My grand parents both had Aeromotor windmils, but I never saw them with the cover off.

This is how my grandpa Linden got his water when he was a kid because he lived on a farm up in Kansas, only his wood pump into the house, not into a cistern.
