Hey Jimbo, Great Review !!! TW-80 (w/BFS spool), Alphas 800-S (factory shallow spool), & Salamandura SV TW 70... I own all three and that's directly related to your reviews/tests !! I added a drag clicker alarm to the TW-80, & the 800-S, of course the Salamandura has a factory clicker !! I couldn't be happier with my selections. the TW-80 is on a Phenix Feather 7' 1" FTX-71L (light) rod, the 800-S is on a Fenwick Elite Bass 6' 10" m/l rod, and the Salamandura is on a Fenwick Techna PX 6' 10" m/l rod. these 3 combos offer a lot more versatility than one might think !! Anyways, keep up the Great Work !! And Thanks !! for all the insight !!!

If you do this then there is no tension from the knob so why have it? You need a little tension....
@rawrfishing19 сағат бұрын
While the name suggests zero tension, there are some even if it's loose. Magnetic braking reels are not like centrifugal. There are always brakes applied. Thus this method of configuration is fine. Daiwa was the first to figure that one out... But it applies to pretty much all magnetic braking reels. Give it a shot

You know I hate to say it but isn't your thumb a break break list is like when I have my tension set on my baitcaster right so I can just sail it out it hits the water I don't even have to touch the reel
@rawrfishing21 сағат бұрын
Ur thumb is used for braking for sure. But I am strictly saying zero brakes on the reel's mechanism. And I have the tension set to zero... But not spool left and right movement. I prefer loose tension and rely on thumb for distance

I have a Teton 662L and originally bought it for a "light power" BFS rod. It was kind of a disappointment so it sat in my closet for months until I decided to try it out as a UL bass rod. Magic!!! This is where this rod comes to life! I fish a lot of micro TRDs, 2" Keitechs, and Neko rigged worms. It has very good sensitivity to feel the bottom and feel small "pick ups", plus it can load up a micro TRD with a .87g nail weight with no problem. Just recently landed a 4.5# large mouth at a local pond and was able to pull her through the grass and salad. If you want / need a 2 piece rod then I highly suggest the Teton. Thanks for posting, keep them coming!!! 🤙

How? Just How? What kind of line are you using?
@rawrfishing2 күн бұрын
It's not just the line. It's the reel! Bait finesse baitcasting reels can throw even down to half a gram. It's all about the spool weight, spool diameter, spool bearings (micro) and the braking system to control the fast spinning spool. The line and rod Definitely does play a role... But a reel have the most constraints. World of physics is amazing! You figure out the mathematical requirements and just change some variables and u get different size baitcasting reels to handle different situations. But to answer your question, I have only 125 feet of 0.6 gou diameter braid. it's a 4 strand PE line from Varivas that is no longer available

I didn't say u were hating. But if you look at the comments... There's ton of haters! If you need a casting tutorial video, I can show you how to explore a reel braking mechanics. It's a better approach than how most people teach others how to cast a baitcasting reel. It first focus on teaching you how a reel behaves... How you can change that, then it teaches you to change to the settings that best fit your casting skill level so you can train your thumb!

hey what's up ! really enjoying your videos ! I had a question I was hoping you could shed some light on someone who has never fished BFS. I've only ever Surf fished the beaches of the west coast and have recently got a curado bfs xg, I was wondering whats the lightest #PE I can get away with fishing small swimbaits in the back bays?
@rawrfishing3 күн бұрын
hi hi! it depends on how large the lure you throw and how hard you throw. I use 0.6 gou for my UL and some L, but most of my BFS fishing is 0.8 gou. Leader material can be 6lb fluoro leader material, more for abrasion resistance to some of the fish. like weak fish and fluke, they got sharp cone shape teeth that won't cut line like arrow head blues, but they can still ding your line when they head shake.
@tannersierraHB3 күн бұрын
@@rawrfishing really appreciate you getting back to me! ok cool I have some varivas 10lb at 0.6# :D I also have some eurotackle at 4lb/0.045mm/0.0017 would this be to thin for the curado? apologies for all the numbers im pretty confused over here 😅
@rawrfishing3 күн бұрын
I would say Eurotackle line are pretty fragile due to how thin they are. I would likely not use that thin or fragile since a big fish could hit lol. but given that you are in the bay, at least you don't have much problems keeping it in structure. Even the sand in the surf and the wave are considered things that would pull your line hard, making your line susceptible to snapping since it got zero stretch. So while we are at it, I usually up my line for the surf. I use 0.8 gou to 1 gou depending on how heavy i cast and the fish size i target using finesse gears. Yeah i know.. 1 gou is a lot and its what i use for my standard fluke fishing on surf, but when u got that big fish and that wave is pulling it back into the ocean... SNAP! Happened a few times already >_<

Then again thanks for quick reply....last question I'm going to throw most likely around 6 to 9 gram is that considered bfs fishing?
@rawrfishing4 күн бұрын
Yes that's still bfs. It's controversial what is bfs or not. But I simply take the approach of UL, L and some ML rods and just go by what the lure ratings of the rod. Keep in mind that bfs fishing is not hard in stone... Enthusiasts/elitests will tell u otherwise, but this niche is still young and evolving. Keep it around 12 grams and under and it's bait finesse on a ML rod and below!

I have a question so I have a bfs reel and all I fish for is bass, bluegill and crappie. Could I use the 10 pound 0.6 varivas pe with a 8 pound suffix Invisiline fluorocarbon leader line, or does the leader line need to be lighter?
@rawrfishing5 күн бұрын
While that leader size is fine, it really depends on the rod length, power and your lure range. If ur using 8lb leader.. I assume u throwing heavier lures? While 10 lb braid is fine with that leader.. It's fragile as it got zero stretch. So it may snap when casting, especially if it backlash. I use 0.6 gou PE line for my UL and L rods and lures around 3.5 grams and below. I use 0.8 gou for 3.5 grams to 10 grams for L and ML rods or longer L rods I use 1 gou for ML power rods for 7 grams and up and also for lures with weed guards or needs to be Texas rigged. While these suggestions are based on my fishery, gears and fishing style, it should help ya get started and fine tune it for your setups and fishery. Let me know if u got any more questions
@thomasburns83755 күн бұрын
Honestly the smallest thing I throw is about 2 grams and the biggest is about 6 give or take. and I haven’t bought a true bfs fishing rod yet because I’m conflicted on which one would be my best all around rod. But the reel I have is a Shimano 22 Aldebaran bfs xg. If you have any recommendations on line or rod please help me out, because bfs fishing is very new to me
@rawrfishing5 күн бұрын
If you are using 2 gram lures, U probably wanna use thinner leader materials. 0.6 gou for braid is plenty. I would drop it to 4 lbs. U can also use mono. Too thick of a leader material will impact small lures and it's action. I am not too picky when it comes to Leader line... U can use regular line rather than leader material as they are more supple and cheaper. Leader material are usually thicker and stronger for when you actually need it for some sort of abrasion resistance.
@thomasburns83755 күн бұрын
I’m just making sure I understand this. Still use the varivas 4 10 pound 0.6. And drop the leader to 4lb? Will 4 pound still be heavy enough to throw like 5 gram lures?
@rawrfishing5 күн бұрын
4 lbs should be fine, depending on your fishery. the line that would snap is the PE line, not the leader. leader material stretches and can compensate. I would be more concerned with your 0.6 gou for your 5 gram lure. especially if you got a long rod and if you are a heavy caster. you can certainly up to to 6 lbs if you are not confident. but just keep in mind, the 4 lb recommendation was for the 2 gram lure!
