I bought a 2010 mdx almost 5 years ago. Yes it doesnt have the greatest fuel economy but I didn't expect that with such a heavy and durable suv. This thing is a solid, safe and dependable vehicle. My wife who is terrified to drive will only drive it and nothing else. Can't say enough good things, and mine gets used in our crazy cold Canadian weather.

@jasonsims1045 my friend is a honda tech And he helped me change my belt last time. He told me and seen for myself the condition of the belt, a guy can go 150,000km between belts as long as you get a good honda belt. This car is so great, even if I had to pay the full price I honestly would. I can't stress it enough, use oem fluids and change all your fluids when you should and this car will last. Mine was originally a leased vehicle but kept up the maintenance. It still runs fantastic at 250,000km. I have ño intention of getting rid of it. Going to run it till she dies :)

I’m also an Acura owner and fan, but think that they should add LSD to front wheels and if they also put it into some oil tank, so that it wasn’t so sensitive to overheating it would be definitely the best from everything!

They finally brought back SH AWD on the RDX in 2019 model and it works really well. In trims that also have the adaptive dampers in the suspension it feels absolutely phenomenal. It has its shortcomings with a bit of a sluggish transmission and a little to be desired on power, but I haven’t driven any other SUV that handles better.

Seems like the Infiniti JX35 has open diffs for the front and rear. I guess Nissan assumed no one would take this car offroad. Open differential is only good for on road to get the most efficiency. I get it fails this specific test but that least the 4wd works unlike the Honda CR-V. Locking diff option for slow speeds would be great for JX35. Hopefully Nissan applies this option. Im not against the Acura MDX (The car is great) but the test seemed very abstract and biased.

Actually James is right. The new Ridgeline has the ivtm4 system which is the same hardware as the SH AWD, the only difference between the Honda and the Acura is the way they are programmed, torque vectoring is programmed more aggressively in the Acura. Basically they have the same hardware just programmed differently.

I have a 2014 MDX with SH-AWD. Last year when it snowed and the roads were covered in snow, I flew up the hill out front of our neighborhood. There was a X5 park in the lane, stuck because it could not make it up the hill. I smashed the gas and took off up it like it was dry out.

I also have an MDX. That said, the X5 has an excellent AWD system, arguably better suited for off road use than the MDX. I'm guessing the reason it was stuck had something to do with worn out or high performance summer tires than an inferior 4wd system in snowy conditions.

After watching a lot of off road videos I realized our lexus is not making me feel as confident as I was the other weekend. My wife and I took out rx330 AWD from phx az on a 2 1/2 hour off road trip to williams arizona on a road I had no clue on what to expect. Turns out it was pretty easy minus some muddy and snowy areas. We did it with ease and the thing is about the lexus if the road isnt too extreme it rides so smooth I feel like im still on pavement I couldnt get enough of it. Surprisingly though it did really well through back roads filled with snow once we got up north but I never really had to push it like you see in this video. I'll stick to the easy stuff :P

+Garrett Fietz Hey Garrett! Yes, the Lexus system is not a "bad" system. It's actually one of the most common AWD systems on the market (multi-plate clutch housed in the rear differential) and is quite acceptable for light-duty off-roading. I think you're smart to stick to the lighter stuff (and shows you've done your homework)! Glad to hear you got through it all safe and sound! :)

@autofanatic1
@autofanatic1 9 жыл бұрын
EGGINFOOLS Hey EGGINFOOLS. That's a common misconception and what's explained in this video. The locking differential on the RX350 only "locks" the rear differential to the driveshaft coming from the front LONGITUDINALLY (basically like a center differential). It does not lock the axles LATERALLY (left rear wheel to the right rear wheel). It simply uses brake-based traction control to try to send power to the other wheel - which as this test demonstrates - is not enough or effective in extreme situations. Also, the RX350 does not use a true locking differential like you'd find on a 4Runner or FJ Cruiser. These vehicles have true mechanical locking differentials that once locked, would have no problem climbing this ramp (they lock LONGITUDINALLY on the center differential and LATERALLY on the rear axle).
@EGGINFOOLS
@EGGINFOOLS 9 жыл бұрын
autofanatic1 Thanks for the info. In my comment above I asked just that. The locking from front to rear. Not side to side.
@passingpower7863
@passingpower7863 8 жыл бұрын
+EGGINFOOLS Ah, got it. I think I can clarify a little more. The RX350's "locking" differential is simply a multi-plate clutch in the rear diff. When "locked", it just applies maximum pressure to press the multi-plate clutch against the driveshaft. Unfortunately, as with virtually any multi-plate clutch, if enough resistance is applied on the opposite end, the clutch will begin to slip. You can see this in many videos on KZfaq when a SUV that has a "locking" multi-plate clutch is trying to climb a hill but both rear wheels don't move while the front wheels spin furiously. This is likely what is happening here, in addition to the fact that the ESC is not applying enough braking force to the slipping wheel. Hence, the RX350 fails to climb.

I currently own a 2011 MDX and the 2012 TL SH-AWD, I love the SH-AWD capability. However I think they need to add an some type of LSD to the two front wheel They are hiding one fact, if only one front wheel have traction and non of the rear wheel have traction SH-AWD is useless, it will not go up the ramp. Acura SH-AWD have a computer control clutch pack in the central diff that control power transfer between the front and rear and one between the two rear wheel. There's no computer control clutch pack between the two front wheel, the two front have an open diff.
@autofanatic1
@autofanatic1 9 жыл бұрын
Blooper Hey Blooper, you are correct that SH-AWD (like virtually every other AWD system) uses an open differential on the front axle. But you be pleased to know that you're INCORRECT regarding the MDX and TL not being able to climb the ramp with just one front wheel having traction. As part of the validation test we had to test every wheel, and did test the MDX and TL SH-AWD models. Both models easily climbed the ramp with just one front wheel having traction (the brake-based traction control worked as an LSD). :)

autofanatic1 we have a 03 odyssey and its an open diff. I had one drive wheel on ice, and i had the rear wheels locked by the parking brake. with only one wheel that has traction, the tcs system which uses brakes was able to pull the odyssey and drag the locked rear wheels which were on pavement. impressive.. too bad it was totaled, but replaced with an 07 lol.. we also own an 00 accord but only the 01-02 have the tcs. im sure it works like the ody and in this videoo.. WhatIThinkNation The CRV starting with 2012 models actually uses a pretty capable system, but of course, it's nowhere near as capable as the MDX system. Then again, the MDX is a luxury SUV that's in a completely different class and costs almost twice as much, so I'd hope it would be more capable! :) That being said, we tested the Pilot with Honda's VTM-4 system and it pretty much blew away most of the luxury SUVs we compared it against.
