When I was a child, I loved baseball. My favorite team was the Atlanta Braves, and my favorite player was David Justice. My parents took my siblings and I down to Atlanta for the 1996 Summer Olympics. We attended two Olympic baseball games at Fulton County Stadium. (Baseball used to be an Olympic sport.) While at the game, I bought a deck of Atlanta Braves cards. After leaving the game, my family and I came across David Justice, who was with some of his friends. The rest of the Braves were on, like, a three-week-long road trip because their home stadium had been taken over by the Olympics. The only reason David Justice was still in town was because he was injured. My parents asked him if I could have his autograph. I took out my baseball card of his that I had just bought. He signed it, and, while giving it back to me, said, "There you go, my man." It was a dream come true. At that moment, I came to believe that everything you want in life will eventually turn out the way you dream it to be. I was 10 years old then; I am 38 years old now. And I now understand that life is not always that poetic. But David Justice created a memory for me that I still remember to this day. He didn't have to make any time for me. This man was once married to Halle Berry, for God's sake. Yet he gave me his time anyway. David Justice is a good person. (Not telling this story because I have any problem whatsoever with the movie "Moneyball." Just wanted to share the experience.)

Baseball is losing it's popularity. The average age of baseball fans is 51 to 57 years old. It has lost it's popularity with a majority of the youth. The cool kids don't play Baseball.

Simple. . .start giving custody of Black boys to their dads. Momma puts them ALL in basketball or football to find surrogate fathers at worst, a retirement plan at best.

Plenty of black MLB baseball players coming from the Dominican Republic but not the states. Same goes for only a handful of white American Basketball players in the NBA. Just the way it is. Last time I checked, David Justice is half black and half white. But he's talking on behalf of all Black players.

I guarantee it’s a lot cheaper to build facilities in other countries than it would be in inner cities here. The difference in the cost of property and construction would be significant

Huge fan of David Justice because he went to my high school. And you better believe him because it's one of the best schools in the country. He *did* bring down the college graduation rate because he played baseball lol.

I looked it up. MLB has their Reviving Baseball in Inner Cities. Sponsored by Nike. Started in 1989 and is serving over 200 communities. Created by John Young in 1989 in LA. It has a 30 million dollar budget. Just some FYI

The head swells for one thing, and new muscles grow that aren't normal, plus you can compare features and easily tell, so they are going to make ones you can't tell maybe.

I have heard that mlb has placed fields in the inner cities for years. I don’t know what has become of those facilities nor if they have been able to maintain staffing for those urban facilities. If anyone knows I’m curious.

If they don't let Barry Bonds in, they should not let any of the managers of that era in. The commissioner, managers, owners, trainers, players, and fans all knew what was going on. IMO Barry Bonds should not be scapegoated

I think what should have been pressed on is this. If you don’t spend money in your current faculties but you know where your going why not show us the money. Not in tax payer dollars but in on the field product. So you need a few years playing at a small ball park while yours is being built. Show the fans and the players that your going to spend money and hit the ground running once that stadium is complete. They should be able to do that or they need to force these owners out mid build and get what the dodgers have in a conglomerate. That’s what should be done and I think will be done.
@bobcat19333 сағат бұрын
This has been the plan I think all along to get max money for the previous owners and the incoming ones. It was the win win and another money ball play that we can watch a new movie about.

Part of the answer is due to changing environment (rural to urban) due to the migrations of the 60s. Black kids from urban environments now play basketball instead of baseball and football in both.

Ehh I just think the black youth isn’t into baseball because it’s boring or not a “sexy” or glamorous sport plus most aren’t sold on the idea putting in years and years into perfecting your craft and being in the minors making little to no money before making it into the big leagues unlike NFL & NBA you can get by on pure athletic ability in the MLB demands being fundamentally sound which can take years to perfect some can’t and don’t make it past minors.

Great interview. For me, baseball is still the national pastime. The game is never over until the last man is out.

Real shame though. Baseball was my first love. I identified with all of the Black American players. There were many back in the day. However, I do not think it’s true that’s it’s entirely financial. Not all Black families are poor. It’s just now it’s become a cultural choice.
