There were 14 teams in the 1920's. There were less than 400 players. The NBA and NFL did not attract the best players back then resulting in more players going out for teams. Balls were not replaced as much as today. Ruth and Ohtani are both amazing players and would be amazing no matter what era they played in.

And? The player pool was almost entirely drawn from people who happened to live near baseball cities and from only white players. Read about how players back then got signed. A scout would happen to see them in some farm league in the cities near where their mlb team played. They weren't scouting or developing the best of the best from all over. 100 years ago most players were white farmers who didn't train year round for baseball. Today we draw from all over the world. It's hilarious to think players back then are better than today's players. In any sport measures in time distance or speed people who won gold metals in 1920 couldn't win a high school competition today. But magically that doesn't apply to baseball?

Recency bias is hilarious. What is it about modern people that makes them dismiss everything that happened before they were born? News flash. The world is not a better place than it was fifty years ago. A hundred years ago. The only thing we have on the people of those eras is convenience and technology and both of those things are destroying us. You're comparing Ohtani, a career .279 hitter with 185 HRs to an all time icon who hit .342 with 714 HRs who also pitched for the first five seasons of his career and was a 20 game winner. The only logical point made was that virtually every big league pitcher throws 98 with multiple pitches now which clearly makes hitting more complicated but at what cost for the individual pitcher? In the 70s when Tommy John had the first career saving surgery of that kind, it was necessary three or four times a year. Now someone has to have it every week. It was once almost unheard of in the minors. Now it's the big leagues, minors, college and high school. Listen to John Smoltz on how baseball management has created a game that eats up pitchers arms and careers. There will never be another 300 game winner. Key has no clue but David should know better.

evolution. athletes are absolutely better today than 100 years ago. players are bigger stronger faster etc. i have no idea why people like you think otherwise. in any sport purely measured by time distance weight lifted etc we see that people who won the olympics back then couldn't win in high school today.

I'm a baseball expert and historian: Ohtani is NOT THE GOAT!! He is the best two-position player, ever, as a hitter and pitcher. That's it!! Offensively, I can name 20 better players in the history of baseball over Ohtani!! I can tell hardly anyone on this comment section don't know baseball!! Mookie Betts is a better, all-around baseball player than Ohtani, without a doubt, a stellar 5-tool player! Numbers and gold-gloves don't lie! Ohtani's offensive numbers just aren't anywhere near those of the all-time greats!! In 10-years, we shall see!? Right now, not even close! Ohtani has generational talent but has to show it with more homeruns per season, more RBI's per season, higher batting average per season, etc. Like I said, let's wait 10-years and see where the stats end up!! Baseball is a sport of individual stats and records, so if the numbers don't add up, you don't have an arguement or case to put Ohtani in the GOAT talk!! Not even close at this point!

You never seen a Ohtani before. He can hit, steal bases, plays against better pitching and is an ace. Overall he’s the best right now. That’s a unicorn.

Dude, no one is saying he’s the best hitter of all time. Yes, betts might be a better hitter than ohtani but can he be a solid starting pitcher? If you have ever played baseball, you would know for sure that being a solid two-way player is tough. Now he does it at MLB LEVEL. He’s the GOAT because he’s doing what no one even thought of doing in modern baseball.

If ohtani dont play the field, automatically he is not one of the greatest of all time.also anyone who strikes out close to 200 times a year is not one of the greatest of all time.david justice is a racist!!!!

Mookie is the better overall athlete- dude can dunk, bowl a perfect game, and looks like he could run a few routes here and there; but Ohtani's probably not too shabby outside of baseball either and is obv the better pure baseball player

Mookie is a great athlete and grew up playing other sports popular in America, but Ohtani is about 40 pounds heavier than Mookie and has faster sprint speed, hits the ball much harder, and also has a much stronger arm. If he grew up in the US he would have been a perfect candidate for a quarterback. Apparently he was a swimmer in Japan and was seen as potential Olympic caliber before choosing baseball full-time.

@@kevinyam2 ya Ohtani would've been a great QB, perfect body and skillset for it. I still believe Mookie is a bit more well-rounded of an athlete though

It's always hard to compare players of different generations. Ruth played for 22 years, Ohtani is playing in his 7th. So far if you compare the best 3 years of Ruth to Ohtani's best 3 years, Ruth was more dominant in his league. But of course his league did not allow everyone to join, so talent was diluted compared to today, where all the best form all over the world come to play in MLB. Maybe after Ohtani's career is over a comparison would be a little easier but IMO the more dominant player is Ruth, the better player is Ohtani.

@@RunForPeace-hk1cu EXACTLY. Anybody that says otherwise is delusional. If a time machine really existed and you put ANY All-Star level hitter or pitcher from current day MLB into MLB 100 years ago, they completely dominate. You can't even do that the other way around. The same thing goes for ANY SPORT.

@@RunForPeace-hk1cuI would argue the best Black Athletes are not playing Baseball compared to 30-40 years ago and the numbers prove it. In 1975, 18% of MLB was Black players. In 2024, only 6% of MLB are Black Players. More Black players are playing Football and Basketball now and i think it’s hurt MLB. When i was growing up, Black players dominated MLB (Gooden, Strawberry, Bonds, Griffey, Jeter, Gwynn, Henderson, Dawson, Rice, Ozzie Smith, Eddie Murray). There is no way near the Black talent in Baseball in 2024 compared to even the 80’s/90’s.
