Now that's how you make a boat tour video! Fantastic boat, the space you have will make some envious. Jason I tried looking for more info regarding the tiller position holding setup, but couldn't find any thing. I read the video titles of Roger Barnes's videos, but the titles don't mention anything regarding the tiller. Do you have some resources you could direct me to? My plans and Full sized paper templates for the Welsford Navigator arrive Monday! So I hope to use your tiller setup!

Hi Jason, was looking at your myall trip again and realised you might be a godsend. I have a 16ft hartley and decided to shout myself a gaff sail. All went well until I tried to find a circular mast to suit. I've just noticed your friend Rob has an aluminium mast with a gaff rig on his pocket ship. Could you ask where he got it or any details that would help me build one. I realise this is probably no the forum for such a personal request but I'm getting pretty desperate and hoped you could help .
@jasonstork9606
@jasonstork9606 29 күн бұрын
Hi Robert, his mast came with the boat when he bought it, but I can tell you how I built the mast on my Argie 15. It's more or less the same as his. The Argie hull was 15'5" long so probably had a bit less sail area compared to a Hartley, but here goes anyway. The Argie plans called for a 6 metre length of 63.5mm x 3.18 mm aluminium tube (I guess that's some imperial equivalent of 2.5" x 1/8"). I used 60mm x 3mm without issue. I bought it at the local aluminium supplier. I bought tangs and stainless wire rope and various fittings from Whitworths to fit it out. I plugged the top and bottom of the tube with wood and screwed a piece of sail track onto it to slide the sail luff into. With a gaff you can live without the sail track. The shrouds were attached about 1 metre from the top of the mast. It's all pretty easy. Have a look at my videos on Kalliope with the bermudan rig and you'll see the details.

@@jasonstork9606 thanks so much for responding to my query. I can get that dimension easily but I discarded the option because I thought 3.18 wall thickness would be too heavy. My next option was to build one in carbon fibre. Ps watched Luna blu from the start and have to admit I love the look of catboat rigs. Even considering putting a mast step in the Hartley bow to see if it would work. Thanks so much again.

Our beginings: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/eJh4ab1mx9Gwimw.html I also might note that Rob's boat represents our US John Harris's design where as in our video you will See Mr. Welsford also represented - and Christened! Sorry Terry but it's not documented in plans. The yacht designer may have done sketches but the only the timber molds still exist at the Wooden Boat Association here in Brisbane. Once he built his own hull he donated the molds and two others were built. I'd love to 3D scan her lines and have them documented but it's beyond my skills.

Looks like a lovely boat Jason. Getting the tiller round the mizzen on a canoe yawl is always a thing but this arrangement looked really 'right'. On first obs, all seems pretty good; only comment is whether all that purchase on the mainsheet is really needed? True its an 18+ ft boat but it is nearly end of boom sheeted but if it was me I'd try reducing it bit by bit, coz it should be pulling 'in' rather than 'down' since the downhaul does the work of a vang and sorts out the sail twist. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/btuBipV_tN2Veok.html

Hi, Jason, I'm about to start a build and would like to have a chat about you added tge 100mm and any issues fitting the 125 sails. I have all the gear off a 125 and would like to use it. I live in rockhampton, so not too far away. Thanks Keith
@jasonstork9606
@jasonstork9606 7 ай бұрын
Hi Keith. The 125 sails fitted well. I just built the mast and boom to suit them rather than following Dudley's plans to the letter. If you have the 125 mast then you just have to work out how to mount it so the boom is at the right height. I think the 125 main is larger and the jib is smaller than Dudley's plans but I didn't notice any sail balance problems.
@jasonstork9606
@jasonstork9606 7 ай бұрын
In terms of adding extra freeboard I simply extended the top side panel by 100mm as per the sketch below. Be aware of two things. A) it makes it much harder to climb into the boat and B) you have to rearrange the cutting plan layout because adding the extra 100mm pushes all the other pieces across the sheet further. I ended up needing an extra sheet of ply. I don't regret doing it though.

@jasonstork9606
@jasonstork9606 7 ай бұрын
@@user-ig7eh7dg4q One decision you need to make.....if you raise the height of the sheer line should you also raise the height of the bulkheads and seats??.......in my case I left the seats and bulkheads as per plan and what that meant is that I had a slightly higher backrest to lean against when seated. That seemed to work best. The one thing you do need to increase is the height of the transom to match the increased height of the side panels. I hope that helps. If I had my time again I would build the fully sealed side tank seats not just bench seats with space underneath. I found that I needed to reinforce the bench seats a fair bit to strengthen them up. I think tank seats would be much stronger.
