Sumac drinks are very refreshing! I like to collect mine 5-7 days after a rain. My sister collects the seed for spice giving a nice lemon-pepper flavor

That looks so refreshing! I like your method of drying first before using. I had tried a fresh 'lemonade' tea with sumac that was questionable with the critters that were in it! So many! The hairs were very lemony but my sumac must have been very mature. Looking forward to seeing how else to process them...getting the hairs separate from the seeds...

Definitely will be covering how to remove the hairs. Sumac powder will also be featured in another video this fall where we make some homemade seasoning mixes! :). And I definitely know what you mean about the bugs, those clusters are the perfect hideaway...

You can grow self heal in the mid to north parts of India (up to zone 9). It would need a little shade and frequent watering to thrive.

I love the saying that you used at the beginning of the video. It is so true! I have seen this happen so many times in my life. Also, if there are pests or something, and I'm down and frustrated after working so hard on the gardening, something really good seems to happen after that, like a certain flower will bloom that I've been waiting on, or some new vegetable I'm trying to grow will look fabulous and produce fruit, and then I'm super grateful about it. I just try to think of the good things over the bad. Anyway, I hope you're feeling better and i'm sorry you had a flare up. By the way, do those sweet little tuxedo kitties help keep your rabbit and mouse population down? I've got a tuxedo named Beau. He even catches moles, just not the ones I need him to. I wish he'd get the one in the garden. 😂 Ugh! And then I've got deer trying to eat my apples off of my apple trees. The struggle is real!

Beau, love that name! 💚The kitties are all exceptional mousers, especially our maine coon. The other two like their naps, 💤 but every morning we find their presents around the yard and garden. I’ve never seen any rabbits on the property but they do a wonderful job on the mice and moles. I think I’m experiencing some of that grace this week, we’ve had a fierce explosion of bees, so many that there are hive battles taking place, but they are so numerous they are driving the cucumber beetles out of the squash flowers. Never seen anything like it! 🐝

I undertand your frustration with your health situation. I used to get migraines that put me in a dark, quiet room for 2 days at least and were nauseating. And I always felt like those days were lost for me. My migraines were always in the sinuses and I learned my triggers. One I outgrew 😂 (my period). Lack of or poor sleeping, and barometric pressure changes. I get them less because I also drink herbal teas. A sleep blend at night. And I actually made an allergy blend for my husband but it seems to help me with getting through the barometric pressure changes by tamping it down to a shadow headache instead of full blown one. You mention sun triggers you, but as a nurse, i wonder if you are getting enough Vitamin D. Vitamin D boosts the immune system, which may sound bad for you, but it prevents the production of cytokines which cause inflammation. Cytokine storm is the massive body inflammation found when a person's immune system is out of whack. Also, I was once diagnose with Polymyalgia Rheumatica, also an autoimmune disorder similar to fibromyalgia. I also manage with diet, cutting out sugars (I now grow stevia), and I am about to start a new tea blend for inflammation. My main ingredients are white willow bark and cat's claw. Sounds like you have quite a bit of inflammation going on which triggers the immune system which then attacks your healthy tissue. So yes diet, exercise and something to tamp down the inflammatory response is essential. Spirituality plays a big role for me in keeping my stress levels down. I talk to God all the time. When things heat up, i just ask him to walk with me, or take the wheel.

I’m glad you mentioned vitamin D, it’s a good reminder because I’ve always felt more stable when taking vitamin D and B12 supplements, especially during our long dark winters. My hormones definitely also play a triggering role, in fact it’s amazing how much a woman’s cycle can be a bench marker for the state of her over all health. I used to get horribly painful periods and now they are usually a breeze when proper diet, stress and bc were removed as factors. I hear women tend to have more auto-immune problems than men…It’s a gift and a curse for women to have such responsive bodies!

Ahhhh, your rain!!! I havent seen rain like that since April. This spring, I planted lettuce and spinach in baskets and had them against the fence inside the garden. I was planning on having a salad for a family dinner and went to harvest and every basket lioked like your swiss chard. A deer leaned over the fence and chomped every single one. I also deal with the bugs and refuse to put anything on my plants. I lost most of my brassicas to cabbage moth worms. I did salvage some cabbage but had to peel back a lot of layers to get to something that i could use. I patrol for hornworms, squash bug eggs and squash vine borers. I'm curious, were those yellow eggs on the leaf the mexican bean beetle? Darn bright yellow worms shorten my bean harvest.

It’s been an unusually wet July in our part of Maine this year, so everything is growing like it’s a rain forest! As for the wildlife, the more we add on to the garden the more wildlife we seem to attract. The deer are hardly afraid of me at this point and a few times they came into my garden while I was out harvesting herbs and veggies, and I was the one who was spooked! 😂 Thank you for your comment. 😊

Hi, I have a long-term condition so have lots of advice for what you are going through. Be kind to yourself. You have no reason to feel guilt for needing rest. Adapt to what you're experiencing. Don't be headstrong it will make things worse. Accept how you feel then work with what energy you have without overdoing it. You may need to stop cropping to not 'have to be responsible' to not consume energy you don't have. Grow a larger variety of species in a way that staggers harvesting over time. This will also help with reducing insect attack. What I did when I was in your position was first buy a bunch of seeds to grow a large variety of species and watched what species didn't get attacked and grew them. I noticed your response to your condition is for symptoms this won't do anything to heal you. Look into fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, Epstein Barr virus which often precedes CFS, and adrenal fatigue. As for herbs, look into adaptogens: astragalus, licorice, American ginseng, ginseng if you get any of quality, eleuthero, schisandra, Gynostemma pentaphyllum, and Condonopsis pilosula you will need them to reduce/stop the anxiousness. Also, look into herbs that mend the digestive tract: agrimony, yarrow, shepherd's purse, and plantain. As you look into those conditions mentioned you will read of other useful herbs as well. Because your health is low you may need to see a herbalist to help, as this is a lot of study to get things right. Oh, I remembered you mentioning in another video that your husband gets sick in winter from his work. The adaptogens that support the immune system will help with preventing that.

Thank you for going over these growing strategies. Gardening is inspiration, experimentation, learning and rewards. The insects, animals and vegetation (for instance my 80' red oaks) in my area of Vermont have been guiding me over the 20 years I've lived here towards what I can or cannot grow and harvest sustainably. And what I must compete for in order to harvest or to enjoy in bloom. Our communities need to preserve green spaces (there's far too much development going on here!) for folks to forage for these common native plants. Best wishes <3

Just last week I started drinking 3 teaspoons of dried dandelion leaves in 1 cup of boiling water infused for 15 minutes each day. Since that first drink my energy level has been exceptional with no other explanation. I wake up mornings bright and ready to go. I buy loose herbs from Mud Brick Herb Cottage in Queensland, Australia where I live. I heard on a video dandelion leaves are very good for the Vegas nerve and their yellow flowers have lutein which is good for our eyesight.

Hmmm, I’ve never encountered button weed in my area before. I’d be hesitant to confirm if it’s medicinal based on the common names, as there may be various species called button weed. I did a brief search and have not found any articles or herbalism books of mine that speak on its medicinal uses. (That’s not to say that it isn’t out there, I just haven’t come across it.). Sorry!

Last year, I searched and searched for Mullien and only found some along the roadside. I gave up searching and figured, if I absolutely needed it I knew where it would be since they were all 1st year plants. I wasnt thrilled with their location although we are country roads here. Then lo and behold, late autumn, I saw some growing on my property. I harvested some leaves then, and this year, I have found a ton of 2nd year plants. We are overrun with Kudzu so I figure it must have covered last year's plants. You are fortunate, your husband is wise enough to recognize what was helpful for him. Mine, not so much. I made up a tea blend with mullien, stinging nettle, and purple dead nettle, as an allergy blend. I also added licorice root to give it a sweeter flavor. He started drinking it, I think because it was here and he doesnt care for coffee in the morning. Plus I had made it up into little tea bags using oragami with coffee filters. All spring he had no allergy symptoms, although he usually is plagued with seasonal allergies. I mentioned it might be the tea. He wouldnt acknowledge that, and for some reason he bought some tea bags from the store and started drinking that. And about 2 weeks later.. ..BOOM..... seasonal allergies kick in. I mention perhaps because he wasnt drinking my tea. He won't acknowledge that. But my hubby is absolutely addicted to Big Pharma and the medical industry. So there is that.
