Hello my friend, i had this problem, so i started watching videos last week, most of them pointed to the brake sensor mechanism, they said take that off and you can overide it and it will go into gear,,i did that, didnt work, so they were saying next replace the shifter cables, so i was like, wow thats gonna be a job, so as i was looking at those videos and im at the point im gonna just take it to a shop and spend 500 dollars, including tow, i came across your video, with my hopes down i got in my truck, didnt even have to take that top steering wheel cover off, i saw the spring, i stuck a flathead screwdriver in there wiggled it around a little bit, it was tight,,but a little piece, about a 1/4 inch long came off, i thought i broke it, so i pulled it out, but then i noticed another spring and it was tight, so i thought,,well im gonna try the gear shift, turned the key to on and it shifted into all gears like butter, mabe that little piece of spring was something important, dont know, but my truck is running again, and the gear shift is as smooth as butter..you saved me alot of money..thank you and God Blees

Yes, I dont recommend buying an after market, either buy it from the dealer or take it off a similar GM at the juck yard. I bought a dorman one but the white plastic clips and design were different and it did not shift the vehicle properly. Buy one uses on ebay or go to the junk yard if you dont want to buy it from the dealer new.COLUMN SHIFT MECHANISM

I recently post my own KZfaq video, can you listen to it and comment if it’s the same noise your Chevy was making if I then can have my replaced. Also how did the muffler shop charge to replace it. Both or just one side? Thank you 🙏🏻

I would get a muffler shop to just look at it and see if they can just listen and give you their opinion. It will save you alot of money.

My mother in law bought a 99 sierra for cheap from neighbor and I had to unhook from trans just to move next door..Checked all fuses and also swapped 2 different shift brake solenoids from junk yard and nothing.After watching your video went out removed the 3 screws and part and found the pin was bent and not sliding back down,and pretty sure the spring was gone also. I'll just go back to the junk yard to look for parts. Anyway,I was so hyped to find the problem that I felt I had to leave this long @$$ comment.Thanks man.

Sorry viewers, I was on my way to work when this happened. I wasn't prepared to film this at that time. The SHIFT LEVER that puts the vehicle in gear has a small spring, " kind of like on a push pen" the spring is what pushes your lever when engaged. If you look on the side of the lever you can see it, some times it bends and come out of place so it gets in the way of pulling the lever torward you. If pushed back in place you will be able to engage the shifter. You can trim the spring if its not to damaged or you can replace it. Its bends into the area like a (L) shape so the spring need to be strained out straight ( l) to allow you to engage.

Any luck finding the spring? Mine broke too and I'd rather not have to tear it apart further to replace the whole thing if I can just slip in a new spring..
@genewileyopa

@@seanmartensen2179 That is so tight to try and get one in there. Try turning your key all the way to counter clock wise then see if the shifter will move. Mine wouldn't come out of park, and when I was working on it that is what I did and it come out of park for me. I still replaced it all.

@@seanmartensen2179 Kind of late but maybe it’ll help someone. I had a similar problem. The same spring in my shifter broke into short pieces and my truck wouldn’t go into park. I searched a couple of parts stores but had no luck. I found a fairly strong spring of the same diameter (~9mm) at Ace Hardware. I had to cut it to the same length (it was 3-4 times longer). It was tough to work it into place but I was able to get it in the same position as the broken one. Works like a charm now.
