I used to travel from Oregon to Pocatello for University (late 60’s, early 70’s). The line continued through Soda Springs to Green River. 🥺 We all really wanted a train to from SLC! Now with the Olympics coming, this project MUST be done; and, connect to Park City!!

Thanks for the fine video packed with information. I got back recently from a trip to from Connecticut to OKC by rail and unfortunately back by car. It was a fine trip. I was going to go via Fort Worth but the train got cancelled. Fortunately I got a roomette on the SW Chief. The difficult thing is that passengers have to get off a about 2:15 at Newton, KS and then get a bus to OKC. I'm hoping they will close that gap with rail.

It’s amazing what a massive difference the little things make. All they had to do was use the standard method of booking train tickets (as done in Europe), or airplane tickets and let you pick your seats on the train so that families and groups can sit together. Ruined our trip. 1 star. Won’t take the train again.

I’m not gonna lie I’m a little disappointed, judging by the renderings for the bridges in Jackson it seems like we are still sharing tracks with NS. I’ve said this for years, we need to separate passenger train lines from freight train lines or the very least, not have them running on the same tracks. Also the current Amtrak station Detroit desperately needs an upgrade and I’m still waiting to see what it will look like when upgraded

I just feel like they should make a brand new Tunnel going towards Windsor instead of using the Tunnel that CPKC uses. Will it be expensive? Yes. But will it be worth it in the long term, yes

I of course want high-speed trains and I always encourage them whenever I can. But even at conventional rail speeds corridors that have their two terminus' separated by 300-800 miles would benefit greatly from having a minimum of three round trips a day. Imagine early a.m. departure. A midday departure and an overnight train.

Can you provide any updates on the Muskego Yards mainline project in Milwaukee and the Sangamon County Transportation center in Springfield ? Both are needed for improved service, and need funding now to proceed to construction. Same goes for CrossRail/CREATE. As an aside, it appears that the Corridor ID program, while creating a uniform process for identifying and funding routes, may have the side effect of delaying existing projects. Either that or else the Midwest is just getting short changed.

Evanstonian here who is a major proponent of the KRM. While the Hiawatha is the fastest way between Chicago and Milwaukee, it is lacking in terms of infill stations. The lake shore has much more TOD with four possible stops having transit centers at Evanston, Waukegan, Kenosha, and Racine.

There are a lot of commuter railcars out there these days, and riders haven't all returned yet after the pandemic, so it would be great to borrow some of those while new manufacturing gets spun up. I suspect that could only buffer things for a couple years, though. If only Chicago used something more modern than the Gallery cars...

I'd to see interlining of Metra lines. For example, the UP North line from Kenosha could naturally head south or southwest. Improving service from the North side and those suburbs to the places and jobs in the southwest regions would be fantastic! At the very least, having all the Metra lines call at the same station would allow easy transfers between them. Speaking for myself, I would love to have the line I live near be able to seamlessly connect to at least two other lines that go out of different stations in the Loop! As for O'Hare connections... On a regional, I can see why. From the city of Chicago, well, that depends on where you're talking about. Any part of the city alone the O'Hare branch of the blue line is all right. If you're starting alone the northside red line, you have a long bus ride to even access the blue line. If you live near Midway but have to fly out of O'Hare, you have no good options at all. Better service within Chicago would make crosstown trips a lot of better. I'd also like to see better connections from the L to Union Station itself. The Forest Park branch blue line stops at nearby Clinton street, but you have to walk two blocks in the elements to access Union Station. An underground pedestrian tunnel with a moving sidewalk would be a godsend! If we're talking highway money, why not? The same could be said from the Clinton St. station from the green/pink station on Lake to both Oglvie and Union. Now, using existing resources, I think LaSalle St. Station is the best rail terminal in the city as every L line calls directly at the station with the exceptions of the yellow, green, and red. We can ignore the yellow line because everyone does; the green and red connect directly to the other lines that go to LaSalle. Also, the red doesn't stop too far away form it anyway. I wish more trains would use LaSalle because of how well served it is by the L, and with some upgrades those connections could be much better: a direct connection from the blue line subway station to the terminal so you don't have to walk under that awful underpass; and an elevated walkway from the Van Buren/LaSalle L stop alone the side of whatever that building is into the terminal with a direct connection to the blue line as well. That would be so convenient, and I'd feel safer making that connection at night as the streets are kind of quiet and deserted after dark.

This is honestly what I've heard from CAHSR CEO Brian Kelly about how they are going to extend California high speed rail project. Not just to the bay or to LA, but even to Merced and Bakersfield. they are gonna split up the sections into different small contractors doing individual specialized things. Hiring more staff to move away from there large amount of consultants, and having 3rd parties in hand before. I'm gonna Miss Brian Kelly ;-;

They're going have to really cut the cost of construction on a per mile basis. Dedicated lines for high-speed rail can get really expensive fast, as the Japanese found out during the construction of the original Shinkansen line from 1959 to 1964, Texas Central Railway's increasing cost to get the right of way and China Rail High-speed (CRH) finding itself US$1 trillion in debt.

Interesting... except for the weird comments about China. Vs in his own words how German projects "get the key to the kingdom" and can, e.g., make modifications to buildings without owner's approval? Or how the US has historically used eminent domain against very specific groups of people and/or for projects that really aren't for the public good. RE China not having any environmental review -- the US could do with less environmental review. Besides the fact that NEPA in practice doesn't actually focus that much on the environment, rail transit is clearly good for the environment. RMTransit's discussion of China's approach to building rail and how that's let them build SO MUCH: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/m86ErJCitry-mIE.html . Everyone else could probably learn something from them, "terrible dictatorship" or not.

The way to advocate for any rail in Ohio is to use Greyhound so that demand can be quantified. The distances from Columbus to any point in state is less than four hours. There are always 10 or more people who take a bus to Toledo from Michigan heading east on Amtrak even though it comes in the middle of the night and is always late. Ohio is the weak link from Chicago to Philadelphia and the NE Corridor. And the Pennsylvanian overnight saves a hotel stay. Quit waiting for pie in the sky!

I think a lot of Americans rather have a frequent hourly train service to the city instead of high speed trains to nowhere. Just two trains in morning rush hour to the city and one back in evening rush hour isn’t enough for commuters to get out of the car into the train. Upgrade the current single rail tracks to double rail tracks, improve the safety system, change at grade crossings to level crossings, electrify the tracks instead of polluting diesel trains and upgrade existing stations and add new stations. Make new P+R stations at the edge of the city with free parking and increase parking fees in the city. Just simple measures which will increase passenger numbers. Only when Americans are used to traveling by train, it is time for high speed trains.

Very good except for 31:34 . Indeed China does have a terrible dictatorship and close to non-existant property rights and environmental reviews, but it's still worthwhile to learn a lot of lessons from. For example their usually standardized sh*t for everything, them overbuilding the stations especially compared with Japan, their extremely complicated jubctions and etc. China and Japan build a lot of elevated and tunnelled sections to increase speed btw. Also land acquisition is also not cheap in the cities, while it could be much easier to do in the rural areas. So to summarize, their cost savings could be greatly attributed to economy of scale and the know-hows (In fact they have been building railroads for tens of years, starting with Qinhuangdao-Shenyang railroads at 2003 with 270 kph and gradually go to Wuhan-Guangzhou HSR with mostly above ground. ) and build the train stations far in the suburbs. However you can still claim that it’s good sides are basically taking the best practices around the world at that time but it’s weaknesses are pretty unique.
