I have been watching your videos for two months now and love the content. You can also catch fish when you don’t feel like going underwater. You can research making fish pots, placing them in the ocean and retrieving them. Be blessed

I love it!!! What a massive undertaking just to get a stove! Much like our life here.. it’s so obvious that you will enjoy the convenience of your new incredible kitchen while also continuing to embrace what is so raw and beautiful about remote island living. Incredible story you guys are sharing ❤❤❤

Simple life channels are cool and all, but yours honestly seems way more unique than that. Living a simple life and building from that in a challenging location makes for a very fun watch. Plus we watch because you two are fun, not just for that. Hope you're both well <3

Great video! Really shows how tough logistics are living so remote 👍🏻 I was wondering if you could maybe make a video about plastic pollution and how bad it is in the Mentawai islands. I found that often the less developed and more tropical paradise-like places in Indonesia have the worst plastic situation due to poor waste management and nearly no awareness of locals about how "buang sampah" really ruins the environment 😢 Would be nice to see how you guys deal with trash and how the situation is on your island or the other islands around you.
@OurIslandLife
@OurIslandLife 6 сағат бұрын
Hi Jon! Thank you for the kind words. Yes, the plastic situation isn’t very good here at times. Mostly plastic from around Indonesia/rest of world washing up on the beaches on days with very high tides. The problem is that there is no where to go with the plastics. We personally just try to lead by example as I don’t feel in a place to tell local people here what to do in their own place. Its definitely a big problem in Indonesia and it definitely bothers us but it’s also a huge privilege being able to worry about plastic and what to do with it. Many people here don’t have enough money to feed their family so worrying about what to do with waste just doesn’t even come close on the priority list. So that’s why i’m not sure what the right approach for a video about this would be. Does that kind of make sense? 🫣

wow sometimes I wish I had an oven like you bought. i have one with 4 induction fields and I discovered that you can't put four large pots on it because the plates are too close together, so you can only put on two big pots maximum. if I cook for a lot of people, I usually use large pots. but i think your oven is big enough for big pots. I built some cabinets myself. You need a circular saw with a ruler to cut out the parts as exactly as possible. I then screw it together with the Kreg jig. I made the doors uncomplicated, no frame doors. Simple glued wood panels 18mm thick with cup hinges and then magnets so that it doesn't warp. Drawers can also be screwed together using the Kreg pot holes. If you have enough time and a circular saw with a ruler and a cordless screwdriver, it's not difficult. I got my instructions from KZfaq "Kreg Jig® Wall Cabinet - Part 1" The important thing is that you get hold of glued wood panels that should also be rectangular if possible and that your saw cuts exactly at right angles. carpenter is here (germany) much too expensive. Ready made cabinets here have no good quality, they are not made of wood but with pressboard panels. Mine made of wood look much better and are much more durable, no wraping and no swelling directly obove my stove with plenty of water cooking. I think you cannot use pressboard panels in this high humidity environement at all. I cooked much in my kitchen und this moisture was enough for these pressboard panels to swell and the coating to come off... so i had to build new kitchen boards.

I built my own Kitchen cabinets from never having done it before. With enough patience, I think An can handle this project. The main thing with making good DIY cabinets is getting straight, repeatable square cuts with a circular saw. In North America, they sell a product called "Kreg Rip-Cut Circular Saw Guide". It's designed to take a basic circular saw and make it into a panel cutting saw that can cut plywood or MDF lengthwise with strips up to 60 cm wide. I'm not familiar with the woodworking tools of Indonesia, but I imagine something along these lines could be found. A tracksaw would also work for this, but be considerably more expensive. The other main cabinetry tool you'll want is a pocket hole jig. There's a million clones of those on the Internet and they're pretty small so I'm confident you can mail order one of those. The purpose of this device is to cut angled holes into the end of plywood or MDF so that it can be pulled tight to another piece with pan-head screws. (Think L or T joints from a side view). Pocket holes are very strong, and perform nearly as well as half-lap or dovetail joints for a tiny fraction of the effort. Since you have Starlink, I can recommend the Bourbon Moth Woodworking "Build Cabinets the Easy Way" series on KZfaq which will give you a great idea of the work involved. As an alternative, the New Yankee Workshop (American public television) also has a great guide to cabinetry but is harder to find these days.
