What i found interesting in suzume that most of the audience know nothing about it was They show here the place which has the most destructive earthquake in Japanese history like Kobe, Tokyo and tohoku region. This is the places where suzume travelled through: Kobe - 1990 Kobe Earthquake Tokyo - 1920s great Kanto earthquake (even daijin said here that "history will repeat itself" during the Tokyo scene) Tohoku region - 2011 Earthquake and tsunami Most of the audience only watched it for the clout, but they didn't really know the history about japanese earthquake which is this is where the movie was based. Makoto shinkai wants the prrsent generation to remember and learn a lot of lesson during the 3/11/11 disaster in Japan.

Sure, it's very pretty to look at but do you know what I got from these kind of movies : People made up their own shits as they went thru their own life with no particular directions & purposes. It's absurdly meaningless and in the end they laugh at other people's interpretations that trying to sound smart while dumb guessings much like looking at dog shits they found on some random strrets many a time.

I love listening to you narrate. You're a very good commentator and video essayist, with a clear passion and respect for the medium. Thank you for the time and effort you put into making this. I have subbed based on this and am excited to watch the previous (I know I'm late to the party!) and future videos.

I love your Japanese accent while speaking English so much. Plus, you speak really good English, more so than many native speakers. The beefy and dedication to convey your thoughts are so acute and cunning. Keep up with the good work.

I wonder if mahito stayed in that world he will not be born nor exist above and he will be with his mother, BUT the last part I wish there was a lot of time for them, I wondered how hima felt back then. The ending left me a lot of empty feelings.

I just watched it today and I was silent about the ending, its just like an empty full of question, like when her mom said "I'll go to the different door".

my question is about the timeline and yes its a bit weird , why did the father remarry his wifes younger sister so quickly , and how is she already pregnant? i can understand , the sister may resemble his wife , and all in all , shes the same family so she might be the most suitable candidate the thing that seems off is the pacing three years into the war mahitos mother died , within a year natsuko is pregnant ??? and when did she become pregnant? i mean if they marry and stayed together , shouldn't mahito know her by then? the beginning of the movie felt like his father just married natsuko and mahito is seeing her the problem is , she is already pregnant? how? i dont think his father was cheating before , he didnt seem like a bad person , nor did natsuko , because they were both very good and caring towards mahito . so what's that? is the answer as simple as this? mahitos father remarried natsuko (wifes sister and all in all , well , most closest to his wife) at around 6 months period , he didnt move in just yet , he stayed with her form time to time , thus her being pregnant , and then they moved in after another 6 months(because thats what it seems how far natsuko is with the pregnancy) or maybe he liked her , and vice versa and after she became pregnant , they decided to marry? idk , is there any source material , to confirm this?

We saw it in Weathering With You: you can't hide your negative feelings forever. And we see it in Japanese society today: for always being collectivistic and putting harmony above all else, Japanese are slowly destroying their Japan by the minute.

First, this is a really great video. I'm glad you recorded it with your voice and updates. I do have a question, though: Do you recall where you saw the comments Miyazaki made about 8½? I was trying to find it but the only thing I found was an interview with Suzuki talking about showing Miyazaki another Fellini film, Amarcord: "We would stay overnight at the hotel, and one time I showed Miyazaki-san a movie - who’s not watched a movie in 20 years - he was hesitant to watch it. However, he got shocked after watching the movie, and the first thing he said was, ‘This is not the movie I made!’ It was by the late Federico Fellini. He has been thinking over and over again why I wanted to show him this film. The film is ‘Amarcord’, which is ‘I Remember’ in English. I thought this director Fellini shares a lot of similarities with Miyazaki-san; I just knew it when I saw this film. After that trip together, Miyazaki-san has been telling a lot of people about this film." I don't speak or read Japanese, though, so if he mentioned the 8½ connection in an interview/documentary/art book or something like that I'd be interested to know where.

When watching this movie I felt really bad for daijin he just has guided suzume and cares for her but had to give his freedoms up again so that sota can be brought back. It makes the movie seem more like a one sided love story because suzume does all this for a guy she met on street and learns a bit of his backstory during the movie (that's my main issue with the movie) Personally I would've kept the cat. (Just my opinion about the movie) Also thanks for explaining the myth and references in this movie

i watched the movie yesterday and i have some questions about the endig 1. When the grand uncle world was destroyed (tower collapsed) does that mean the pelicans are now free? since they were stuck on the island starving and thus lead them to eat the wara wara and they weren’t native to the magic world ? Does that mean they returned to their real world 2. himi burns and kills some wara wara trying to protect the majority of them and some wara wara get eaten doesnt that mean the dead wara wara also reincarnate again? since the wara wara are a reference to how souls are created and the the movie theme is about life and death and reincarnation? and kiriko says that himi killing some of them with her fire will help the majority to be reborn doesnt that also imply that these souls also regulate anyways even if they get burned or die?

A few more things I noticed 1. The movie was released in Japan 11.11.22 mirroring the earthquake - 3.11.2011 (11s!). 2. at the end of the movie, Suzume looks like a Japanese shrine priestess (Miko) with her red and white outfit. Thoughts?

I do atleast hope that the two of them visit and pray to daijin regularry, and the other keystone too though I don't think it matters as much to him. Daijin may have not gotten to spend his life as a cat with suzume for long but he got to spend time with and be apreciated by the people he protected for so long and be reassured of the meaning his eternal dutie has. Also he got to reunite with the other spirit, their cuddling on the car seat was soo adorable. So eventhough I feel bad for him I do think he is happy in the end, I just wished they added a scene at the end were suzume prays at his keystone and offers him some fish, the poor little cat deserves it.

This explains so much!! I was so confused when Daijin became so sad that Suzume was upset at him. I was like, "what did you expect? You were hurting her by opening those doors and wanting to sacrifice Sota." Now i get it! Thank you for the explanation!
