When he was beheaded in 1747, he was the last person in this country to be executed by beheading, but beheading wasn't actually abolished in UK law until 1973.

Thanks Peter, this last beheading applies only to England. Incredible to think that Hanging, drawing and quartering (which includes beheading along with everything else) took place as late as 1803 - Robert Emmett in Dublin, which was then entirely under British Rule.Check out more in out book atwww.heritagestories.co.ukJohn

Heritage Stories By then however, instead of being HUNG, drawn and quartered, those sentenced to be executed by hanging, drawing and quartering were HANGED, drawn and quartered. The evisceration, beheading and quartering took place after the victim was dead.

Heritage Stories However, the last person to be executed by beheading in the entire Western World was not executed until approximately 230 years after Lord Lovat. He was Hamida Djandoubi, who was sentenced to death in France for the 1974 murder of his former girlfriend, whom he had kidnapped, tortured in full view of two girls he had lured into his confidence and then strangled. He went to the guillotine on 10 September 1977.
