That is one of the musical bits from the Spanish operetta "Katiuska, la mujer rusa" (Katiuska, the Russian women) composed by Pablo Sorozabal with libretto of Emilio González del Castillo and Manuel Marti Alonso, the premiere was in 1931 in Barcelona. Those where the actors wich premiered in Madrid in 1932, Enriqueta serrano married Pablo sorozabal a year after the recording.

I believe this was composed by Herman Rowland in 1886 as "With the Tide Schottische." I was delighted to play it along with a quintet of classic banjo players two days ago.

Here in Australia you cant see the FA Cup final unless you have pay TV, Football (soccer) plays second fiddle to the indigenous, village green style footy, AFL, Rugby League and 'spare me'cricket, any way. Brainwashing media, with their financial, barrows to push, see to that. Its not so much the game i miss ,but the tradition .Singing 'Abide with me" being perhaps the most endearing .You dont have to be religious, or even the Christian faith,Its purely and simpley ,tradition The Anthem of the FA cup,The oldest knock out competition in the world

What a beautiful voice and beautiful technique... I honestly and truly think I might kill to have a single voice that even approaches Clara Butt's in opera today

I can recommend this song as an Antidote to Earworms. Simply sing it yourself for a few days or a week and any pesky pop will be driven from the glimmering crevasses of your mind.

I shall add a comment here. I recently got access to my great-grandmother's notebook with a few lyrics on it. This is one of the songs in that relic. I want to believe she listened to it on a gramophone like yours :) Thanks!

Wow quite a rare one you’ve got there, recorded around 1934. One of their later recordings.

I had a HMV wind up gramophone in the late 50s and played this 78 often. When I later heard Kate Bush sing Wuthering Heights I was struck by how like Barbara Diu she sounded. Not heard this since I was about 10!

Although the HMV 112 and the EMG are obviously more desirable, my choice for a portable would be the teak 101. As it's more of a portable than the other two and i already own a HMV 113 'transportable', as the 112 and the EMG could be fittingly called as well.

I'm not sure if it was Edison production, but generally speaking, Edison's choice of music for recording on his cylinders was horrible. Apparently he had no idea of good music.

Fascinating to hear Isobel Jay in whose name a prize was offered annually to a talented pupil at the Royal Academy of Music. A notable recipient was Ann Hood , soprano and later Mezzo Soprano who sang and recorded with the D'Oyly Carte Opera Company and the English National Opera.
