Damn, find a friend who can rock and record him jamming on it. Amazing dirty tone. Also try a slide.

WOW!!! :) My DEAR old, late Dad - would have loved seeing this.... 😊 He enjoyed strumming on a banjo, he built a few violins when he was younger, & he also trapped/hunted coyotes - during his teen years, way back in the 30's, here in southern Saskatchewan! :) THANKS for sharing this! :) GOD greatly BLESS, you & yours, and all reading this.... :) 🙏☝️👏👏

Were you able to make a playable chanter with this tool?
@lucassoutherton8 ай бұрын
Yes! I think. My biggest problem is that I don’t really play bagpipes so when I run into trouble playing, I don’t know if it’s trouble with the chanter, the reed or the user. I also made the chanter so it has the same fingering as Native American Style Flute, which adds another layer of complexity. Here’s a video: kzfaq.infogXtPz-YYL5Y?si=cLYAUsRvLpLvU4iV Please excuse the terrible fake Irish accent. I probably had one too many Guinness when I posted that video haha.
@northernpiper948 ай бұрын
@@lucassoutherton hard to know from a video but it may be just your reed being finicky, or it could be due to the wall thickness of the chanter. I want to try making a highland pipes chanter in Bb out of locust wood, but I'm dreading buying one chanter just to cut it down the middle and copy the profile.

You probably figured it out, but the trick is to fill the bag full of air, then give it a solid squeeze and keep pressure on it. Only blow in again when the air is getting down. This will allow you to keep constant pressure, which will keep all the reeds going, without dropping out and losing their tone. I have a Cornemuse de Centre from Frans Hattink in Holland. It's very easy to play, once you get the air pressure down.

cool! I did a DIY reamer using cheap Lowes 'tool steel'... pretty much did what you did, but I run mine on my lathe, for making Uilleann pipe chanters(sub-amateur/hobbyist))

Oh cool! Cutting tool steel with tool steel sounds hard so I guess it’s good one was cheap. Have you made any chanters with it yet?

Szia! Your playing was truly amazing for a first-timer, I'm very impressed :) Duda are commonly used in Kalocsai dances and at Matyo festivals, and I feel like you really have a knack for it! Magyar is pronounced with the 'gy' sounding like a 'j' in standard English by the way, but it was very thoughtful of you to include our instrument's Hungarian name :) Happy playing :)

Thank you so much! I play Native American Style flute so I have some experience covering up holes with my fingers at least so I'm sure that helped. I look forward to looking up Kalocsai dances and Matyo festivals to learn more!

Hi! Where do you buy it?
@lucassoutherton2 жыл бұрын
I bought it from www.etsy.com/shop/copernicusbagpipes . . . It's not listed there currently but I'm sure you could contact the owner and he'd be able to have one made for you. Alternatively, I'd sell you mine! I play and build Native American Style flutes and my original plan was to fill the holes on the duda chanter and retune it to play like the flute, but after getting the instrument I thought I would run the risk of destroying it so I changed my mind.
@brennanstock38962 жыл бұрын
That's sweet. I was looking into conical reamers but they seem to be pretty heavily engineered. I know traditional flat reamers are used a lot in flute making. Do you think having two cutting edges on each side would be excessive?
@lucassoutherton2 жыл бұрын
Thanks! When I was using this one, it had a tendency to bind up if I went too aggressive with it. Steady controlled turns with gentle downward pressure and frequently clearing of chips seemed to be the way to go. So I would think that two edges would be even more likely to bind up and require even gentler pressure and I think it might just be more aggravating to use. I never tried a two edge reamer but I suspect that if they worked better they’d be the norm.
