I wish I could have ridden with you. Bella Coola has been on my bucket list for years. This year it will happen. One of the things I find interesting is how different people approach this. So many different bikes, so many different packing styles.

Only thing I would do differently is find out the ferry schedule and plan the trip so I ride there and take the ferry back. I think the ferry ride would be quite scenic.

I just stumbled upon this 2011 video of you on Lolo Trail. I’ve been over the Lolo a couple times, but never off the tarmac. Headed back over this summer, so I’ll probably check out 500. I clicked over to your channel after watching this one to see if you’re still publishing and saw you recently posted a ride that includes Bella Coola. I’ve been planning a loop from my home in Washington, up Vancouver Island, ferry to Bella Coola, and overland back to Hope BC, then home. I am jumping over to watch that video of yours now. Thanks for sharing all this content!

Dave I am very happy to see you are doing great I know a lot have happened to you. I just want you to know that you inspired me to build my own electric motorcycle. You see we have the same model mine is 600cc and I thought to my self after watching your spider motorcycle series that I should do it too. Now this conversion is my engineering thesis and things got serious after my decision. I want to thank you for sharing your passion. Cheers!

Talk to the lads you got your motor from and see if you can trade your AC-20 in for an AC-23. It's the same motor save it has twice the windings, giving it twice the torque but half the horsepower. Then you can get a larger front sprocket (and a smaller rear sprocket) that might last a bit longer while still getting the same "at the wheel" power figures. At the very least there would be enough material on the sprocket that you could weld a hub to the shaft that has a sizable flange, drill and tap some holes in the face of the hub flange and then bolt the sprocket to that. At least then changing the socket once it wears out would be a simple(r) job. Other than the chain sprocket wear issue, it looks like you've done a bang up job. So much so that I've spent the last couple of weeks planing a build of my own, which is where I ran into the AC-20/23 info. I'm tentatively planing on converting a Yamaha V Star 650, which has a 3:1 shaft drive, so I needed a motor that pulled really hard at about 2500 rpm.
@dave6ix
@dave6ix 3 жыл бұрын
Ya, some good thoughts there but I doubt they would trade motors. I would like to start over and make a new bike frame and all, possibly a shaft drive with proper gearing.
@drewswitzer7574
@drewswitzer7574 3 жыл бұрын
I was at one point contemplating making a frame from scratch, but then I'm not sure how the insurance would work, so I'm going with a conversion. My problem now is that most shaft drive bikes that aren't half a ton are small displacement cruiser style bikes like Honda Shadows, Suzuki Boulevards, Yamaha V Stars, as counterintuitive as that sounds. Rare is the sport/standard bike with a shaft drive. The only other shaft happy category I've found is big touring bikes, BMWs, FJR1300, Concours, Goldwings, etc. Then we're back to bikes that way a metric ton and don't have much more space in frame to make up for it. I figure if I take the V star, or Shadow, or Boulevard, whichever comes up on Kijiji for cheap and doesn't look like a complete dumpster fire, then make it an homage build to 1940 American bikes like the Indian Sport Scout, then I can get a stadard-esque riding position with shaft drive under 400 pounds with a fairly large battery. I reckon that should be pretty fun. If it's not too personal a question, how hard was it to get insurance on your conversion? Over here in Ontario, it's looking more and more like it might be easier to get the Leafs to win Lord Stanley's Cup.
@dave6ix
@dave6ix 3 жыл бұрын
@@drewswitzer7574 no problem getting insurance. It's ensured as a conversion from gas to electric. So just a safety inspection and then insurance. Scratch built, I don't know.

Dave, The most simple Cheap and largely availlable Dc-DC converter is a simple very common 12V 5A switching power supply that normally work on 100-240Vac!!.. A dozen years ago i have found that these standard AC-dc power supply can also work as a perfect DC-DC!!! You can stack as many as you want in parallel and theyse are also isolated in and out as a bonus!.. go to the recycling facility you will get a full bin of these for free!... I use these 12V 5A power supply for all mty ev conversion now and what is important to know is that most of them can start at a voltage as low as 20Vdc sometime at their 100-240vac input. here is an exeple of that type of power supply i am talking aboutwww.btechfix.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/08/LCD-POWER-ADAPTER-12V-5A.jpg

I thought I submitted a comment or more so a question so if this is a double I apologize. My question was, what made you decide on the HPEVS AC 20 as oppose to something bigger like a 25 or 35?
@dave6ix
@dave6ix 4 жыл бұрын
Why that size, well I felt anything smaller would be underpowered and the next size up may be too heavy, too physically big to fit alongside the battery pack, and finally would have less range or require a larger battery pack. Everything is a compromise, you want to go fast or you want to go far? That motor is 65 lbs and my battery pack is 175lbs, I also carry a large charger in there. You run out of room to put stuff real fast. Good question, thanks.

No problem, had to get a basic out of province type inspection where they filled out all the paperwork changing it from a gas bike to electric. ICBC was a pain in that I had to tell them how many cc the engine was, lol. So we settled on equivalent cc for the electric motor. So it's registered as a 250cc I think.

ANOTHER Epiphany! A TWO STROKE donor bike! Because the crank area of engine is entirely isolated from trans and wet clutch ...MEANING that one COULD machine a power shaft to replace the crankshaft! It would have a gear rather than crank halves and conn rod ...PLUS the cylinder studs to use as a means of bolting on electric motor!...."crank" seals might be a challenge as crank chamber would be dry...you would have entire clutch and trans! For a pressed together 2 stroke crankshaft it seems entirely cheaply doable to machine the hell out of crank halves and then bolt them together with sprocket between them! Maybe have dual sprockets/ dual electric motors each polarized to turn crank is same direction...symmetry of motors protruding from each side kind of like a horizontal opposed cylinder arrangement Batteries could be shoved under cut away fuel tank/ in previous exhaust radiator areas not to mention where air cleaner and carbs and original battery went......also there is "adventure bike" luggage which could carry batteries too...
@dougiequick1
@dougiequick1 5 жыл бұрын
Something else to consider would be motorcycles that used modular drive train components Not a lot of choices that are not also highly collectible. ...of course old Harleys and various old british bikes Royal Enfield, BSA, Triumph, Greeves, Norton ,AJS....but such would make it possible to bolt electric motor fairly easily to primary and transmission...might even have use for clutch? Slipping it to build revs? Something with a driveshaft??
