I use a 1/2” dowel and give it a snug fit, but can still be pushed out if needed. For the hole, I slip the handle in between the uprights, clamp it and drill it. I kind of set it up like its going to be, and make sure it looks right, then go for it. Hope that helps

Bingo i did similar for doing 3x12 oak ,i build a lot of patio kitchens and use a lot 3"×12"×12' and 6"×6"×12' oak Its much easier to set up a router sled then to feed heavy material thru a planer on the job site. I have burn up a few 2hp routers and broke a few shanks on 3/4 shaft bits because the tend to get hot if you try to go to fast or remove to much material Works great once get it down tho

How did you get the dowel for the handle to stay put? I see how you sanded down the dowels for the back of the press, but wasn't sure how you got the join with the handle to stay. Did you glue, cut, and sand?
@jeffportercreations8234
@jeffportercreations8234 3 жыл бұрын
I didn’t glue the dowel in place. I wanted it to be able to be removed for cleaning, so I sanded the dowel for a tight fit and then the mineral oil helped to make it a bit tighter. It will push out with some force.

Have you had any issues with the glued slabs breaking under the pressure of using it? I've been avoiding a butcher-block style press for that reason. Maybe I'm too cautious? As for the video - The only thing I'd be more careful of is getting yourself in between the camera and the work. Yes, I know it's a little difficult - keep up the good work!
@jeffportercreations8234
@jeffportercreations8234 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the helpful critique Brian! So far nobody has reported any damage. This is the one that I still think about though. I ran the glue joints 90 degrees to what I normally do. So far so good. You know the saying that “the glue joint is stronger than the wood” (as long as the joint is good).
@rbrianlindahl5499
@rbrianlindahl5499 3 жыл бұрын
@@jeffportercreations8234 ya, I think I'll build it running the other way. I've had those kind of joints fail occasionally, leaving a shred of wood that broke off where the glue was in fact stronger. :)

I originally thought the same thing too, but now I’ve gone down a massive tortilla-themed rabbit hole, and the one thing that keeps coming up is how little pressure it actually takes to flatten the tortilla. I think I always got thrown because of all the cast iron ones (because why would they make them so heavy duty if it isn’t needed), but in the bon appetit video where Brad goes to a place that make their own all day every day, you can see how little pressure is needed (and how easy it is to use too much pressure). Now I’m thinking I can go back to my plans for a jointed wooden one, and the fear of destroying my creation can be the thing that stops me from pressing too much :P
@tacowheeler2200

@@Joelwilly57 depends on how I make it. Do you want mixed hardwoods? One like this at 16” would run 200-250, but I could make it less expensive by using less expensive wood. I just heard about lumber going up a ridiculous amount (like $9 for. 2x4) so I would need to verify that to be sure.
