Making a Tortilla Press build video. Its my first ever build video and I have a lot to learn about filming, lighting, sound and editing!! I've been putting it off for too long and my friends are alway telling me to do a video when I make stuff so they can make it too. Alright, so here goes my first effort, I hope you like it and get something from it. Don't be ((to)) critical but I could use some pointers if you have some constructive criticism. Thanks!

Ok you asked for it! First I would like to say this is a very nice looking project and I will be making a tortilla press along these lines, good job. Now for the rest, you don’t need to show all the sanding. You didn’t show how to attach the press handle, I know, I know I should be able to figure this out.. easy stuff but not everybody will. Also you might want to ad feet to raise the body so the press won’t sit in water (moisture) while using. Also do a finale demo. Ok that was enough, this is exactly what I was looking for, very nice.

Hi Bob, thanks for the critique! Yeah I know Im lacking on some information. I'm still getting my feet wet with the filming part. One of the many little details I left out was that after the mineral oil dries, I do put some clear rubber feet on them. Please let me know if I can help or answer any questions that I didn't address in the video.

Along those lines, how was the handle connected? Also, it seemed that you put the glue on the surface of the wood instead of in between. Do I have that right? What was the reason for this? Sorry for all the newbie questions

Wow. Very nice. I finished my press yesterday (I still need to apply oil) and I think it looks very cool, I did a good job (for a rookie). Anyway, this is one of the most beautiful, best looking, and well-worked presses I've seen in my life. And take my word for it, as a guy growing up eating tortillas I've seen quite a lot of presses. I always like the wooden ones more than the metal ones. Yep, Bob Keller already mentioned some things that are cool and useful. However, I would like to stress out again... BEAUTIFUL PRESS!

Have you had any issues with the glued slabs breaking under the pressure of using it? I've been avoiding a butcher-block style press for that reason. Maybe I'm too cautious? As for the video - The only thing I'd be more careful of is getting yourself in between the camera and the work. Yes, I know it's a little difficult - keep up the good work!
@jeffportercreations8234
@jeffportercreations8234 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the helpful critique Brian! So far nobody has reported any damage. This is the one that I still think about though. I ran the glue joints 90 degrees to what I normally do. So far so good. You know the saying that “the glue joint is stronger than the wood” (as long as the joint is good).
@rbrianlindahl5499
@rbrianlindahl5499 3 жыл бұрын
@@jeffportercreations8234 ya, I think I'll build it running the other way. I've had those kind of joints fail occasionally, leaving a shred of wood that broke off where the glue was in fact stronger. :)

I originally thought the same thing too, but now I’ve gone down a massive tortilla-themed rabbit hole, and the one thing that keeps coming up is how little pressure it actually takes to flatten the tortilla. I think I always got thrown because of all the cast iron ones (because why would they make them so heavy duty if it isn’t needed), but in the bon appetit video where Brad goes to a place that make their own all day every day, you can see how little pressure is needed (and how easy it is to use too much pressure). Now I’m thinking I can go back to my plans for a jointed wooden one, and the fear of destroying my creation can be the thing that stops me from pressing too much :P
@tacowheeler2200

Beautiful choice, I love the juxtaposition of the contrasting colors and grains. I’m in the middle of a rolling butcher block counter top project using hard maple, walnut and mahogany.
