I am currently in the cybersecurity boot camp and have 2 months left and this was a 6 mos waste of time ... the fly through the topics and never really teach you anything. They just present a topic let you follow some instructions to play with it and move on to the next topic. Please dont wast your time and money

I nearly messed up because I saw they had a coding python online from Harvard I think it was and I have a Bach in CJ I doubt it’s this easy to get in a class setting just by sending an email so I’m glad I waited to see how predatory people can be

I saw this same thread when I google searched “UT Austin data analytics and visualization bootcamp”. That same thread was posted just over 2 years ago. Today 7/17/24, I have seen later videos, 8 months ago, stating the material has been updated, and the price dropped from $12,000 to $8,500 since that time. There is also a $200 summer sign up discount. Thus far, I have found that those who drop out have still had to pay following sign up regardless. I have called to confirm this. However, the absence policy states that you will not miss 2 consecutive courses. There were no comments on if there is a medical exemption. Was going to sign up, but am leery due to reviews such as these.

I found this bootcamp, and the others you mentioned in another video that are affiliated with edEx (I was looking at Northwestern in Chicago) in a Forbes article. I knew it was a paid advertisement but thought, its Forbes, it can't be that bad, right? Wrong!

I failed at self taught for 4 years. Took a bootcamp and walked out with a job in the worst market I've heard of. I definitely worked stupid hard the year leading up to the bootcamp. Once I got there, I was programming, learning, or networking for 12-16 hours a day. It was insanity. People thought i was a genius because I knew basic js/html/css/react pretty well. You should hardcore investigate the legitimacy of any bootcamp. That much money, and maybe 50% of my class has a job? Shit sucks. You better be ready to grind for a year after graduation.

Currently doing due diligence on Fullstack Academy and Codesmith. CS charges a lot more and has no scholarships. FA has a smaller cost and scholrships. I have been learning Python by myself, and getting a job with just Python is a pipe dream unless you’re a math wiz and know AI. So I’m leaning towards full stack. Once I get the first gig I can continue learning Python, and maybe scoop up another language.

Currently in sales and reeeallllyyy considering a career change into software development. Currently in the phase where this video is exactly what I needed. Study for 100 hours before deciding and choose a part time but study full time is such great advice and I genuinely appreciate it!

Thank you for sharing this information. I just saw a boot camp of theirs being advertised and wanted to make sure if they were legit or not. I took some coding classes back when I was in high school but I would like to go to a boot camp to certify my knowledge on newer languages and break into the industry. I started studying Python in my free time and I picked it up pretty quickly so I'm pretty confident in my skills

Playing devil's advocate, why not include some good bootcamps/short courses that deliver some skills cost-effectively without making empty promises. Some allow you free exposure to the courses (without getting the certificate).

A degree or certificate alone isn't going to get you a job in software. They want to know what you did. You have to have a portfolio of your work/projects, that is your real resume for the software field. Just saying you completed a course or certificate or degree and say you know it isn't going to get you a job. Competition is too great for that to work. This isn't a charity. If you can't meet the requirements, then this is not for you. The world doesn't revolve around your schedule, aptitude or needs. You either adapt or this is not for you.

Learners need to shift their paradigm. Getting started and employed within a year is not gonna happen anymore. Better have a job while you are moving to your new career, and build projects like mad. Freelancing is a great way to build the portfolio. In the last 5 years, the tech market has virtually turned upside down! Companies are moving away from taking on self-taught juniors, they have a much better pool after the layoffs. Just gonna take a serious grind now.

Learn Java and dive into Android App Development. There is a huge lack of experienced Android Devs. Also Java developers tend to have less competition so far from my point of view. The bad part about .NET is that most companies look for at least three years of experience writing C# code. Go with Java & Kotlin and you will have less competition once you get in.

0:35 yep that's true. Back in the day I was getting accepted to places without a degree or experience and now they don't even look at you if they see just three things. Now you need real live projects that have done well and many other things. I regret leaving my tech job back in the day, I thought I would get another when the time comes and I need more money.

I just did one of those boot camps, with "University of Texas at San Antonio, despite it being helpful because it taught me a lot of coding foundations, of course I didn't feel job ready after graduation, so it is very disappointing they promise the paradise.

What are some good jobs that work well with learning how to code on your own?

I think it’s so important to have an idea of what you want to build before you enter a bootcamp. Not having a plan means you’ll not be able to ask the right questions.

Man, I have a full time job just doing office work. My whole life I've spent on computers and I always thought I would end up doing something computer related. But I went from highschool to college and took a programming course and it just burned me out pretty fast. The amount of work they shovel onto your plate that isn't even programming related is crazy. I was preparing english lectures and business presentations, and all sorts of shit, and then on top of that they want you to learn some pretty advanced programming stuff towards the end of 2nd year and even more advanced 3rd year. Anyways, so i burned out and took a 2 year software support diploma instead of pursuing the 3 year programming diploma. Part of me regrets it. But at the time i wasn't looking to be a programmer i wanted to be in web design. But that landscape has changed so much now that IDK that I even want to be a part of it. There are so many website builders and frameworks out there. Then i recently heard that someone I know who had no interest in computers took a 2yr bootcamp and is working as a software engineer. This really shocked me, and got me thinking about a programming bootcamp. But part of me thinks that if I wanted to program I would have taught myself it by now. Like I know the basics and I can make python scripts and batch files and a bit of php and a trickle of a hundred other things. if it was my passion i probably would have taken it further. idk, im really on the fence.

Totally agree that you should explore free resources to make sure you are interested. I am mostly self-taught, but never developed something to at least a working finished product. Work in finance now, but I have been interested in taking Chegg Skills certificates in Front & Backend Web Development since it is free through my employer. Can't say no to something free.
