Found your channel today an am on my 4th video in a row... it's very interesting to see someone who has learned quite a bit but not everything in this program (especially watching as a beginner). Very intrigued by the job you were able to land, huge congrats on that! Really enjoying the videos you're putting out.

Been listening to your videos for a bit, and everything you said is what i'd recommend at this point in your career. In the tech field you're always going to have to learn new things; the better that you get at being able to derive a system to be able to learn those things in the long term will be what sustains your career in the field. The focus to a specific discipline in tech is also a really good approach in general, as no good company is hiring people as juniors with the expectation they know the entire stack, but a focus of that stack.

I drilled down on the fundamentals of the niche / languages I thought I'd be using while formulating ideas of what I wanted to build for personal && potential business projects && then veered into tutorials && videos covering specific tools I would need to build the specific projects I decided upon (you will need great project to get into the industry via bootcamp or self-taught path)

from my exp you need to know the whole stack, plus dev ops, plus some kinda cloud (aws or azure etc) yes its alot but thats just how it works. esp in higher ish paying roles. the luxury / meme of just being a "junior front end dev 4 life" is beyond over. its a darwinian grind, esp in this tech economy. good luck and godspeed

Great vid Colby! Congratulations on your job offer. Now that you have a job secured, is there any point finding another course to do? Can’t you just self study from here

I know quite a few people in other cohorts that have had similar issues yet are still stuck with the huge loan. Has anyone thought about doing a civil lawsuit due to their breech in contact??

I agree about long term learning! 6 months at part-time still seems rushed in my opinion as well. I think those 6 months need to be stressed to nine or 12 months, but I guess the idea behind it is to get you job ready and you're not supposed to really learn everything in depth. You're supposed to know just enough to get a job. But I would rather the 6 months be 12 months to be honest and maybe full-time go from 3 to 6months

I like what you said: instead of being a jack of all trades but a master of none, find one programming language to dive deep into. I’m seeing a lot of jobs wanting SQL - that might be want I self-study.

Could be worse. A lot of people do App academy. It’s six months. Much harder and if you fail 4 assessments you get kicked out. Every time you fail an assessment you wait two weeks and start back up 2 weeks behind. It’s brutal and I promise you a lot more brutal than a 3 month general assembly boot camp

Hey Colby! Have you checked out 100devs? I’m on the self taught route and Leon Noel teaches that bootcamp and he’s amazing! Oh I forgot to mention it’s free and all his videos are on KZfaq. That sounded like a sales pitch it’s not I promise lol

Thanks for the recommendation. This will be the topic of upcoming videos but I've really started liking Launch School and their methodologies. Currently working on their curriculum.

@@ColbyJaxCodes Launch School looks really great, liking their transparency via the web site, and their commitment to a mastery pedagogy - it's what I needed /would have liked at my bootcamp, unfortunately wound up leaving/quitting early. So I don't have any appetite really for any bootcamp and not liking the Capstone 4 months of "9-5" then months + on project. How is the free prep stage going?

It's been great! Learning a lot about WP, PHP and the agency model in general. Thanks for looking out. You've been like a guiding light of advice and useful insights for the better part of a year now.

@@ColbyJaxCodes Yea the reason I've been a bit adamant about it is because agency work can be very challenging, especially as a first dev job (because people hear WP and underestimate it.) Most important thing is to keep asking questions if you have blockers and to not allow yourself to be blocked too long.

It's a bit ridiculous how hard it is to break into tech, considering how easy the jobs actually are. I graduated with a CS degree + 3 internships. Even with all that, it was tough finding a full time job. I did end up getting one (fully remote, over six figures) and it's a joke... just very basic CRUD operations and maybe 2-3 hours of work each day.

I enjoy your content. But I disagree about getting a mentor. I think you should enroll into another boot camp. I would honestly just go back to general Assembly if I were you. I know what happened was terrible but I work in education and I can tell you things fall apart they come back together, especially after covet the education world is a mess 😂 but they do have a good curriculum and if they're going to give you half off, this may be a good time to restart and refresh it and you may have better teachers. I'm pretty sure you'll have better teachers and better support going forward because this is not something that general Assembly is going to want to keep having to redo. This sounds like something that was definitely a one-off situation because they're going to lose a little bit of money too and the reputation is going to suffer so I think they'll get it right the next time I really do and I think that's something you should consider. My issue with mentors is that they're not consistent and you don't really know what you're getting versus what you're paying for. Like it has to be very clear what their role is going to be as it pertains to what you need and what you want to get out of it. And at least with boot camps and traditional education, the outlines are pretty clear for the most part. Still not perfect but it's a little bit more structure and I think you have a better chance at getting what it is that you're looking for out of the situation. So reconsider GA 💕

Of course the person who works in education thinks going back to the organization who ripped you off and tried to buy your silence you is a good idea.

My friend from college initially recommended GA to me last year, but no longer recommended it to me by May. He wouldn’t go into details when I asked why not. That alone was sus, but then to hear about the NDA that Colby was offered? I’m staying far away from GA.

@@paullopez2021 oh wow I've heard nothing but good things about general assembly. That's surprising and disappointing at the same time. But I definitely would not pay for a mentor that doesn't or has never done mentoring before. Like if I can't refer back to his mentees or check his previous reviews, some kind of way that's very risky, more riskier than going to a boot camp in my opinion
