I'm glad you watched the video. The Sony ICF-SW23 was sold in 2009 as the final version of the ICF-SW20, and was a fully analog portable radio with a double superheterodyne circuit configuration. It's extremely portable, but the shortwave reception performance of the radio on its own was a bit lacking. However, when using the included reel-type auxiliary antenna, I was able to hear overseas broadcasts at night very well. It had a very simple structure with only a sound quality switch and volume adjustment on the left side and no other functions, but it made a great contribution to reducing the weight of luggage when trekking. I remember that even with such a small radio, I was able to hear a lot of broadcasts while on the mountain. It looks similar to the CR-200 you mentioned in your comment, but the contents are completely different.

I'm glad you watched the video. Unfortunately, production by PALSTAR has already ended. However, if you have the materials and a soldering iron, I think it's possible to make one yourself. The product is very expensive, but if you make it yourself you can probably make it for about 1/10 of the cost. The key parts of production are the use of high-quality ferrite bars and Litz wire, equally high-quality variable capacitors, and the design of low-loss amplification circuits. It's not something you can do right away, but it's a lot of fun to research and make it yourself, so why not give it a try?

I'm glad you watched the video. I was able to hear 7MHz LSB communications, but I was unable to hear any aviation/marine radio or high-band USB communications at the time I filmed. Solar activity is currently at its peak, which should allow radio signals to be picked up from greater distances, but results will vary depending on the time of day, antenna and receiving location. Perhaps the antenna was chosen incorrectly.

I'm glad you watched the video. When I bought this, I tried various things to see if I could improve the sound quality of my relatively inexpensive portable shortwave radio. While the end result wasn't a huge success, I was at least able to make the audio on a weak signal stand out, so I think it was satisfactory. It especially contributed to easier listening on SSB/CW.

Has an RF gain control been a thing of the past for quite some time, or is it hidden in a sub-menu?
@May_happiness_come_to_you_777
@May_happiness_come_to_you_777 Ай бұрын
I'm glad you watched the video. The IC-R8500's RF gain control has only three selections, -10/-20/-30db, with only -20db available for frequencies below 500kHz. There was a time when this was a topic of discussion in Japan, but I believe it was due to the manufacturer's design philosophy. The functions and operation feel are similar to those of a stationary receiver, but when using the actual device it feels like a handheld device with enhanced scanning functions. Here in Japan where I live, it is popular among those who enjoy aviation radio and as an introductory model for SWL, and even though it has been discontinued, it still fetches high prices on the second-hand market.
@DandyDon1
@DandyDon1 Ай бұрын
@@May_happiness_come_to_you_777 Yes, they definitely command high prices on the used market. Interestingly I've read many complaints about the three position RF gain selector/control of the Bearcat DX-1000, which is much older. Yet no one complains about the lack of a RF gain potentiometer on the front of the IC-R8500. The AOR 5000/5000A/5001D all seem to only have AF gain and squelch controls on the front. Yet no one complains about there being no RF gain control, BFO, and other "knob" toys one would find on something like a Hammarlund HQ-180A. Maybe the desire for such "control knobs" as died away over the years?

What are the advantages of these shortwave radios besides getting world stations? I usually buy vintage boomboxes and just buying a basic radio without a cd or tape seems kind of too basic for me. Oh and when I was a young teen, I had this Sanyo top of the line boombox that had those 2 shortwave bands and I never used. Oh and that model was from the late 70’s but I can’t remember the model number.

When I was a young teen in the late 70’s, I had a top of the line Sanyo boombox with the world bands. I never used it, but that boombox had everything and I even hooked up a turntable and it played like a full on stereo system and sounded great. It also had a dial light and 2 mics you attached on the ends. It was considered one of the top 10 boomboxes from that era and I ended up 2 others and one had all the different bands and one didn’t . Sorry for being off topic, but since this radio came out around the same period, it had kind of the similar eutectic as my old Sanyo boombox. I also hear this radio was not designed the best and has some issues and problematic. I just found out about this radio a few days ago and may get one if I can get one cheap.

Wow! ICOM IC-R75! I would listen to shortwave radio stations when I was a teenager, using my simple shortwave receivers. I wished I could own a communications receiver, general coverage that can receive signals from 1,600 to 30,000 kHz, but I could not afford it. Now, I am nearly fifty years old. SW has been replaced by the Internet. My wanting to have a communications receiver is only a dream now. I know I cannot get all I want in this world. At least, I can watch this video to make myself happy for several minutes. Thank you for uploading this video.

@@May_happiness_come_to_you_777 Hi, I opened up the radio, I've seen the plastic insert in the middle switch assembly, I did open the assembly and removed the insert but it is not enough, a small slot remains open in the pcb and the switch lever does not find nothing to lean on , so I had to modify the original insert by dremeling it and adding a small piece of plastic. Maybe a replacement insert could 3d printed to perfectly fit the hole. Anyway , my switch is now an on off switch. I did also replace the two lamp bulbs with leds . Thank You for Your help ! Luca
