I really like the theme and art direction of this game. And...that Rehearsal booklet is genius. I was figuring this might be too complex for me, but now that I saw that it's got me rethinking... 🤔 Reminds me of the starter pack in Wingspan that I have used on more than one occasion to teach that game to non-gamers. I wish more publishers would create these kinds of guides to their games. Very thorough and beautifully shot video! (Now off to check out the campaign!)

At 5:08 I'm noticing that Beckham is desperately trying to tell you something about Gnome Hollow. 😂What a cute little guy! Given that I love both The Red Cathedral and The White Castle, I find that I'm becoming more and more interested in Rock Hard 1977. (Plus '77 is the year Best of My Love by the Emotions came out....great song!) I was just the 500th person to click the thumbs up for that game on the BGG Gen Con Preview list. It's the #1 most anticipated game on the list! Two games I'm curious about are Pixies (Bombyx card game currently on BGA) and Pirates of Maracaibo. Great video, as always!

Good preview! The artwork and theme is what primarily caught my attention. As a solo gamer I was wary when I heard the main mechanism was blind bidding. But David Digby has done a phenomenal job creating a solo mode that incorporates this mechanism, flows well, and simulates an actual opponent. After sampling a couple rounds on TTS, I decided to back. Have you played Darwin's Journey? I think you would enjoy the worker placement in that game as your workers become more powerful as the game goes on and you actually have the ability to craft their abilities and which worker placement spots they will be able to go to. It's really unique.

If you enjoy games about decorating your home, I recommend checking out Bamboo. I haven't played it yet, but part of the game is placing tiles in your home and balancing out how amount or types of tiles on each side of the home.

Your reactions are priceless....love it! 🤣 Now down to business! haha I've played Harmonies only once. I was really expecting a spark from it, but there was no spark 😕. I'm not giving up on it though cause I can see it's potential. There is just something about Cascadia that I absolutely love and will always be at the top for me! 1- Cascadia, 2- Calico, 3- Akropolis, 4- Harmonies & Aqua. I've only played Harmonies and Aqua once, so as of now they are both tied for 4th until I can give them both a fair shot of being played. Hope my list doesn't make you "slow melt" off the couch too! 😂

Great list, Carly!! 😀 I actually played Rock Hard: 1977 at a small local convention this last weekend. It was so much fun and very thematic....and I won! 😋 I absolutely must own Comic Hunters!! I've wanted it since hearing about it, and I'm so stoked that it is getting released here in the US!! I'm also really intrigued by Pampero ever since seeing it on display at BGG Con last year. So many great games!!

Aquatica is one that doesn't get played much much, but I will have to get the new expansion. The art is very colorful.

I just picked up the base game last week and played my first game of it yesterday. Now I need TWO expansions? I feel like I should apologize to my wallet. I was wondering about those purple mantas, thinking I might have gotten a bad copy because they were so difficult to read. Was thinking of contacting the publisher to see about getting replacements. Oh well, so much for that! 😂😂

I own all five games and I agree om the scoring on Aqua still after, I think, 13 sessions. I don't stack the small animals by the ecosystem tiles - only the one to tell the scoring - so I would probably prefer one of each small animal to come without a point marker or maybe a backside without. This is probably the biggest hurdle - get the points by the ecosystem, not what's on the tile.While I obviously like all the games, Akropolis and Cascadia will come out as my two favorites. I like the format of comparing similar games so good idea there!

I have Akropolis, Cascadia, and Calico. Love them all. If you like building up I would recommend checking out: Gunkimono and Miyabi. I do not have Harmonies and not played it. Cassette was number 1 a few years ago.

I miss the challenge in Harmonies, I feel due to the number of ways you can score you can always do something, much like Cascadia. This makes it more welcoming, but also less challenging. Player interaction is minimal and hate drafting is not a thing, because there are too many things going on on each player board to keep track of, which emphasizes the solitaire play even more. I prefer it as a solo game, but you can play all the other games solo as well, so it doesn't stand out. I can't argue with the art and maybe it would be more interesting with a focused solo campaign. I think it is over hyped, especially considering the number of similar games out there (as you've shown so nicely in your video). I'm not following your explanation on Aqua? I haven't played it, but would like to, so was wondering about your comment 'Too many ways to score'? How do you mean? The scoring for Harmonies changes with every game, because of the cards, so why are the changing scoring conditions a negative in Aqua?

Where would you rank Verdant among these?

Harmonies is SO GOOD!!!!!!

Excellent video! I’ve found that I personally am not a big fan of abstract tile-laying game. Azul is a hard pass for me. It’s too mean for my tastes, and the puzzle doesn’t interest me. Calico is a solid game, but as you mentioned, it’s really mean and can be quite dependent on luck of the draw. I do like Cascadia more as it’s pleasant, and I would pull it out with new gamers. Strangely, I do enjoy Akropolis and can’t put my finger on why I like it more than the others. Maybe it’s the combination of strategy, tactics, and hate drafting doesn’t really come into play (in my experience). I haven’t played Aqua but don’t feel the need to add it to my collection as I own Cascadia and Akropolis. Like you, I also initially was not interested in Harmonies as the gameplay didn’t look like anything new or interesting. I was on the fence after watching Amy and Maggie’s review. I finally pulled the trigger yesterday when my friendly online game store had it on sale for preorder for the next print run. So I’ll give it a try when it arrives. It’ll be interesting to see where my opinion falls in the review spectrum :)
