I honestly don't think it's my place to judge either side as I'm not Ukrainian or Russian or Belorussian; there could be plenty of circumstances behind the scenes that we simply aren't aware of or can't be made public. That said, Dasha Kasatkina always looks understanding and amicable no matter the outcome, so that's very pleasant.

Azarenka is a lovely lady and intelligent and respected the Ukranian by not laughing like Sabalenka did. Kasatina was also very respectful and understanding of the situation in the French Open.

It’s one thing to not shake hands at the net, it’s another to not even acknowledge your opponent when you come to shake the umpire’s hand.

Not shaking hands at a tennis match where many of the players make serious coin is totally ridiculous. This is almost as sad as the war itself.

Svitolina was always a sore loser atleast now she doesn't have to fake a smile and Kostyuk acts like everyone should apologise when they see her. Ukrainians deserve better role models

I can’t really comment on the matter of shaking hands - I see where both sides are coming from on this issue. But Kostyuk expects far too much from the Russian and Belarusian players. She just doesn’t see the whole picture at all, thinking players should just denounce their whole country and put themselves at risk in speaking out. She is very childish.

This is Ukrainian arrogance. If you care so much about your country, go and fight against Russia. Because they need more people there. In this kind of war, you need women and men. There are plenty of things women can do. However, Ukrainian tennis players chose not to go to war. They enjoy making millions, partying, travelling around the world, playing tennis. So shut up and do your job. We don’t watch tennis for politics. Ukrainian players should make up their mind. Kasatkina openly rejects the war, she is vocal Putin critics but her hand is not shaken. Azarenka has been living outside Belarus for. Ore than a decade, her hand is not shaken. So what do they want? Opposing or not opposing, their hands are not shaken.

If they really cared, they would refuse to play against a Russian opponent. They think they are so rightous. Being unsportsmanlike will not save one life in Ukraine, or end the war by a single hour.

Sabalenka just standing there at the net like she expected a handshake was everything. I like how smug she is about it. Sport should unite and help bring people close together, so I really don't see what they're achieving here by making this hypocritical stance. Half the world should refuse to shake hands with American players if we went by their logic.

It would make more of a positive statement if the Ukrainians did shake hands with Russian / Belarusian opponents who have done nothing wrong.

I'm definitely with the Russian and Belarusian players when it comes to this. It makes the Ukrainian players look like snobs. Especially when the Ukrainian tennis heads went after a 16 year old Ukrainian girl for shaking hands with a Russian girl. Then the Ukrainian girl's father had to apologise on her behalf saying things like "she's just a kid, she didn't understand" making out as if she had committed some great crime or something.

If only they understood the power of uniting through sport. It would show the world something good.

This behavior from Svitolina is wrong and dangerous. Azarenka and Kasatkina are one of the most respectful players out there and clearly have no fault on what’s happening.

The Ukrainian players diminish themselves by bringing politics onto the tennis court. Refusing to shake an opponents hand is unbelievably petty and makes them a bad sport.

It's fine that Ukrainian players don't want to shake hands with Russians and Belarusians. I understand the reasoning and thinking behind it. What I don't respect is someone like Kostyuk who couldn't put that into words but instead invites hostility. Svitolina either needs to sit her down and have a chat or completely disassociate from her. I'm sure Svitolina has a few detractors from within the Ukrainian tennis community. I'm sure her recently retired male counterparts don't agree with her being too civil with the likes of Kasatkina. Big ups to Baindl though. The only Ukrainian who continues to shake hands with Russian opponents. I lost all respect for Svitolina after her recent on court drama. You are playing an individual sport like all of your opponents. Not a national one. If you feel so strongly about it, why enter prestigious tournaments where you know you are going to face Russian and Belarusian players? I don't understand why these Ukrainian players brought the war issue in tennis court. Belarusian and Russian players have never supported the war. Maybe they are quite about it because they know whatever they say, it would only create more issues. No one can please everybody. Not everyone can understand them. So they choose to keep quite. Less talk, less mistakes. What if these Ukrainian players have Russian or Belarusian partners? Will they loss respect to their partners too?

I believe even if the war ends today, they still wont shake hands with Russian/Belarussian players. No handshake is the new normal for Ukrainians.

If we can say Russia and Belarus in real life and in the media, then why can't the athletes from these countries represent Russia or Belarus? If the tables were turned, if American athletes just represented their name and not USA, we wouldn't like it. I'm not pro- Russia or anti Ukraine. We don't have to shake hands but we can acknowledge an athletes country, even if we don't agree with that country's policies.
