In the early 1980's Gordon, Trevor and Jeff Gamonsway began making analogue video and sound recordings of trains of the New Zealand Railways over much of the network in both North and South Islands.
In this video in June 1986 the Dc Da freight was first seen leaving Mount Maunganui with a Mount to Kawerau goods and return, the shunt that it done on the way back when it dropped its tonnage was at Hawkens Junction then headed down to Awakeri to pick up tonnage. The shot climbing the grade with the ocean in the background was Otomarakau, then straight after that it was seen stationary in good sunlight, that was at Pukehina where it had to restart after a broken air line repair and then Paengaroa.
Over four decades later these are such a great historic record of the areas captured that I have not edited heavily as in almost every frame there so much that has changed and gone.
I would like to thank those NZR workers who gave help and advise in those early days of this video hobby to the Garmonsway family and myself.
This first video has trains with almost new Dc locomotives and in many cases reworked olde siblings in Da form still working everyday jobs, some even still had guard's vans. I would be glad to get feedback on these videos which I will pass along to Gordon, Trevor and Jeff. Mike.....
