014 Refurbish A Vintage Wooden Crate

I show you how to take a flea market crate and make it look nice enough you can actually use it inside. Don't over pay for faux vintage looking stuff when you can take something old and make it new.
I like to make things, and remake things.

Pro tip : when you want to hammer on something soft like wood, use a piece of wood to lay on top of what you want to hammer. So you don't damage your work.

Using the Scotch Brite pad to clean up the wood without ruining the markings is an awesome tip. I will definitely keep that one in my back pocket. The box looked great when you were done. Good job!

My husband had one of these crates. He wanted to make it into a coffee table but died before he could so I bought the hardware for the legs and bought legs and I bought fabric squares and some cotton batting and a cardboard base and made a soft inside bottom and glued it inside. I've been listening to it creak as the temp changes. It's dry. Thanks for this tip. People were telling me to varnish it but I don't want to do that. That would take from the raw wood.

I bought two of these. I love them. I'm such a history buff and wonder about the solders that touched them. You cleaned it up beautifully. Using your tips from start to finish on mine. Probably use a nail drive or another nail on any protruding nails.

Found your video tonite after picking up an old dovetailed Hercules gunpowder crate in a second hand store today. Used your cleaning & wax method and the box now looks fantastic. Thanks for the great tips !

Picked up a couple of good tips especially using the Scotchbrite pad. Using a vice instead of a hammer for the warped timber will give more control and lessen the chance of marking it. Thanks for the vid.

My hubby had a old crate at his shop ,I told him I’m taking this he said he threw a bunch away when he was cleaning,we also threw a couple away when we renovated our house we found them in the crawl space,I kick myself for throwing them out

I love old things. I’ve got one just like that but a little more beat up. The wood is already starting to crack in places but I’m okay with it. My only issue is why to do with rust on the hinges?

Any tips for old ammo boxes that are completely painted and then letters stenciled? I have an old Romanian ammo crate thats painted green and black letters.

Working on a newer military surplus crate. It was made out of junk wood and splintered in a couple places but the text and crate itself look really cool! I had to use wood filler to repair a number of spots and I'm not sure how the wax may look since the filler is a slightly different color than the wood. If I stain it will the text keep?

Thanks for the video. I collect firearms, and love military surplus. I was told by an older guy a few years back to clean, preserve and save the wooden furniture on the firearms with ‘Scott’s Liquid Gold’ furniture polish. This stuff is awesome! I use it on older surplus crates like you have. Any opinions or feedback would be appreciated

Hey Andrew ~ thanks for the advice to revive my vintage crate. Can I use anything similar and more affordable than Johnson Wax? $150+ for a can ~ yikes! I’ll send a picture when finished!

Any furniture paste wax would work. Johnson stopped making theirs and prices went crazy.

I actually picked up almost the exactly replica of this crate at a garage sale!!!! :) How would you: Account/treat for green discoloration in pieces of the wood due to mold/mildew damage? If I wanted to get a darker finish, would i be able to use a stain that would still allow the ink lettering poke through the stain?

Not sure about mold and mildew. I would probably see if it comes off with the Scotch-Brite pad, and if not, maybe spray it with a little diluted bleach solution. I personally would not stain one, because then you’re gonna have to deal with finishing it over the top of the stain. Briwax mix wax with a bit of a dye or color in it, that might give you a real nice result.

Clamp and wood glue close up that gap? No? Umm Hammer? Hmm that's kind of an odd uh, idea? Box looks good tho, with the new hammer marks and split, kinda adds to the... Oldness look of it I guess. 👍😬

How do you think tung oil would work? I've used wax but it just dries and doesnt keep that rich darker look, maybe I should put it on heavier?

I have a very similar crate I’m making into an end table. I love how the text pops after the wax. Would you be able to do a poly coat after the wax soaks in? I want to make it easy to dust and repel moisture.

I would not use polyurethane over wax. Skip the wax and just use the poly.

You did sand it. That's what your scotchbrite pad did - it's essentially an abrasive pad... and why would you ever take a hammer to dry old fir???? It is clear you left hammer marks all over the cross brace. This was a great example of how NOT to refurbish a vintage crate.

This is so satisfying to watch. I found an old yellow pepsi wooden crate at the store and didn't know how to save it. This should help! The paint is faded in places though. Any tips on that?

... Always try to preserve the original state of an antique... It is more valuable and gives the item more character.

Question. What scotch brite pad did you use and would it scratch paint work?

I don’t know what grit it was. It’s possible it could damage paint, especially if it’s loose. Start out gently to avoid any damage.

+Jocelyn Molina I'm not sure. May have just been a household one. I wouldn't go crazy with the abrasives, so you don't lose too much character.

So many things you did that I didn’t like for instance wiping it down on concrete is not smart you scratched it up under it. Take more care of your things and the quality will be there plus the hammer just toss that away
