MY VERY DEEP FAMILY STORY WHILST TOURING THE COTWOLDS - CONTAINS SOME HEAVY AND INTENSE PERSONAL CONTENT
"Sanctum of the Slaughters"
Filmed 28th June 2014
Post-production completed 10th September 2014
I return to my home county of Gloucestershire for a family gathering. Whilst I'm in the area I tour around a few of the picturesque towns and villages of the Cotswolds and talk about a very deep family story, which continues in the following two films.
Filmed in the county of Gloucestershire. Locations include Bourton-on-the-Water, Lower Slaughter, Upper Slaughter, Stow-on-the-Wold and Chipping Campden. This is the first film in the Cotswolds.
Written, researched, directed, camera and sound, edited and music by Patrick Leach.
Any other names credited in this film, i.e. Bob Morgan and Martin Roy, are pseudonyms, which I used at the time of making this film. However, I no longer use these pseudonyms as I want viewers to be clear that my films are completely my own work.
Click here for a map showing the route of the locations used in the film. It is not a walking route, but it shows the route on which I travelled by both car and foot between the various locations featured in the film: osmaps.ordnancesurvey.co.uk/r...
DISCLAIMER: Although I work hard to ensure all information is correct to the best of my knowledge, I am only featuring information I have found online during my research when putting this film together, so I cannot guarantee that there are no mistakes or errors.
As with all the films I make, this is a mini-movie of my personal journey along the walk, in which I might share some of my own personal stories, and not actually intended to be a guide to the area.
If you are new to my channel, I strongly recommend reading the description under the “about” tab, which will provide a clearer understanding of what to expect in my films: / solitaryrambler
There is also a short “Introduction to the Solitary Rambler” video, which briefly explains what my films are all about: / solitaryrambler
Many thanks and I hope you enjoy watching!

Thank you so much for your honesty in the film , You came across as sincere but with humility , your pain was clear I Lost my dad when I was fifteen years old but he was a brute of a man and an alcoholic, my childhood was a nightmare ,but one which has made me a better man , I ve used the abuse and pain ,to make me a better man and a good dad , I hope , My youngest brother Deck - short for Derek , carried the anger inside him till his dying days ,and couldn't let go of what he,d seen and experienced ..I was determined to travel in a different direction .... Deck helped me write my first book about our child hood called - View from the doorstep , Theres a link on my facebook that takes people to it , and its free to read ... All I ever wanted when i was a lad was the approval of my dad ..sadly it wasn't to be ,but that's ok I now look at life through the eyes of a parent myself ... And I ll try and always been there for my lads ,because in the end what else is there .. my children are my legacy ,they are what lives on after me I tell them every time we speak , be good people treat people with respect And treat them the way youd like to be treated ... And you know Patrick as they go on their journey they know they have my blessing,s I just want them to be happy and eventually find love and settle down be that with someone of their own sex or opposite ,as long as the partner your with loves you and you love them back that's all that matters in the end .... Gloustershire and the villages of lower slaughter and upper slaughter were and are simply beautiful and once again you've shown and shared more wonderful places with us , for that we thank you Patrick ...And once again thank you for showing the real you , you should be very proud because not everyone can express their feelings and I thought you did that with great dignity ... Thank you My friend ... Sincerely Frank And Lee ....

Sorry to read about your own father Frank, not an easy time for any of you. Sounds like you have a great family now, which is good to know. I'll have a look at View from the Doorstep, thanks for letting me know about that. I won't comment just yet about my Dad as the story you saw in this film is continued in the following two films when you see them. The Cotswolds is another beautiful part of the country again, not somewhere I know very well at all, but the little I've seen has been good. Thanks for your comments Frank and Lee and for watching. Cheers, Patrick :-)

I just stumbled across your wonderful videos while researching the Cotswolds for a trip in late August. I truly enjoyed your videos as I found them informative and I appreciated the historical elements you incorporated into them. I see you have created so many more capturing your travels across parts of lovely England. I cannot wait to tour this piece of the countryside. Thank you for taking the time to put these out there for people to enjoy! My heart goes out to you regarding the story of the relationship with your father and how he treated you during your life. It is such a shame and just know that he is the one who will be filled with regret in the future. You deserved so much better, but I'm sure you know that. Kind Regards, Melody

Hi Melody, thank you so much for your kind comments! I will be returning to the Cotswolds later in the year to make a couple more films in the area, but I will focus more on where I am visiting rather this time. I hope you enjoy your trip to the Cotswolds in August. Thanks for watching! Cheers, Patrick :-)

That was a wonderful film Patrick thankyou,I'v never been to the Cotswolds and knew nothing of the area,so what a fabulous way to be introduced to it,love the information you give about everywhere you visit too, very well researched, although I was wondering how the Slaughters got their name,I will have to Google it,very interesting as the villages are a thousand years old too. Listening to your tales about your Dad too is heartbreaking,it's his loss mate and he will know that one day, you've grown up to be a grand chap thanks to your Mum and the rest of your family. Thanks again, really enjoying them. Pete.

I looked up the name of the Slaughter village and it's derived from the old English Slohtre which means muddy place. And I was expecting tales of Anglo Saxon and Viking carnage !

As I was now into making the shorter films I felt I could take my camera with me whilst I was staying in Cheltenham for a couple of nights for my brother's wedding do, so after that I decided to make a film in the Cotswolds whilst there. This is actually the first of three films in a row where I tell my Dad's story :)

Just catching up on some of your old videos Patrick. Really enjoyed this as I have been to these places so much over the years. I hope that opening up on your childhood helped ease the pain you experienced. I once did a similar thing with my family. A bit more directly than you have. It had little or no affect. I just feel that people often back themselves into a corner and can't get out of it. No matter what the logic says. Anyway, I'm looking forward to part 2 of your story. Best wishes from Herefordshire.

Thanks Adrian, at the time I made this I felt it was a good idea to tell my story, but I wouldn't do this today. It was a way of expressing myself and I had some lovely comments from people, which was great. I also had the odd one or two cruel comments, which I deleted. All the best 👍

Firstly, Patrick, sorry that you had problems with your father. It can be awful if relations within a family can be strained. I had that business years ago, and understand what It's all about. Well, there are some lovely locations to be seen on the film, starting at Bourton-On-The-Water. Lovely old quaint buildings are highlights in this place and the footbridge over the river is a gem. Stow On The Wold looks so inviting, too. Many thanks for this interesting production.

Oh. I see you've made some more videos about it. Sorry I text before end. Which I have a bad habit of doing. I'm 78 & lost my wife 2021 after 55yrs of marriage We had a caravan on seasonal pitch in Peak District (Biggin nr Hartington) which it looks like you've walked through there. Had it there for 12yrs & absolutely loved it. But wasn't same after wife passing. So I bought a van & converted it into a Campervan & am absolutely loving it. Coming hopefully to cotswolds this summer. You've certainly been about. Got loads of videos to watch there I see. All the places you've been to in Peak District I've often Bern to.

So sorry to hear about your Dad, my Dad was the same, an absentee Father, who was and is a narcissist, who hid behind his religion, to be a Narcissist and Emotionally abusive, I have no plans to make up with him, he didn’t make the time for his Son and like you, it’s left me feeling bitter and angry, you don’t owe him anything, your a very nice person, who has unfortunately been left broken because of your Dads poor behaviour unfortunately
