Welcome to Ian's N Gauge channel!
It has been an eventful year, and while it may not look like I've made much progress with my build, in this video I'm going to go through what I've learned in 2023.
I'd like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for watching, liking, commenting and subscribing and wish you all the very best for 2024.

Thanks for the shout out Ian, that phrase became embedded in my brain when i was a snooker player, i became so analytical that at times i found it hard to play a shot without "watching myself from a technical point of view"'. This resulted in a self inflicted torture which saw me go from making 100 breaks then not being able to pot a ball all within the same match. I know golfers suffer from the same thing and sometimes it stops me getting on with the layout when you see potential issues and as a result just stop. All the best for 2024 , really enjoy your channel.

Hi Ian, a big tick for you for number of things learned in 2023! I'm also continuously impressed that you manage to get a video out almost every single week of the year. I've enjoyed following along :) Your recording out-takes are a familiar scenario - each sentence/paragraph you hear in most of my videos is rarely the first attempt, and there are certain combinations of words that I've learned I can't say properly! I look forward to 2024

Hi Jonathan! Thank you! The year seemed to go by so quickly, but it wasn't until I started putting this video together that I realised how much I'd done! I also "officially" retired this year, giving me more time to produce videos, although saying that, sorting out dad's estate has been more like a job than my real job was! Lol! Yes, I know what you mean about the outtakes! I have literally hundreds for this year, but only a few were caught on video, as I usually have my webcam turned off! As I script all of my videos, I'm sometimes left wondering "who writes this rubbish" when I continually can't speak what I've written!!! Anyway, Happy New Year, and all the best for 2024! Cheers, Ian.

The ideal N-Gauge video channel. How to pack a lot into a small space. Watching the bloopers, do you write a script and read from that or do you speak ad-hoc? If no script do you think that might help. I mention this because when trying something similar (for family) my partner suggested writing down what I wanted to say and read from that. I found it easier. Having said that... try and avoid tongue twisters :) Many thanks for your time and effort I find it very entertaining. Now how much if that N-Gauge will I be allowed to fit in the caravan we live in.

Hi Ian, I’m John…. I think🤔🤣, brilliant mate, it’s so good you take the time to produce such good video’s, it makes my setup look so amateur, as you would’ve seen! But honestly I can’t believe the amount you learn when you start building a model railway and take on KZfaq too! I read with interest your comments with Stephen regarding filming in 4k, and I think for now the investment I would need to make would be beyond Mrs Exehaven’s understanding, so it will be a continuation of filming on my 6 year old iPad and editing in iMovie, although having a Mac and a decent camera really interests me, but having just spent £500 on a couple of things for Exehaven more expense on what would end up being another hobby could prove difficult! I’ve learn’t with you this year Ian and there are many things including the jigsaw that are the devils work, soldering I find is another! It’s always interesting content and the amount of time you must spend researching and testing to bring us these video’s is worth mentioning. I look forward to what next year brings us all. I certainly hope we can meet up again this year mate, and on that note I wish you a very happy and prosperous New Year, cheers Ian, John 🍻🥂

Hi John! I'm, err, Ian! Lol! I'm really pleased you enjoy the videos as I really enjoy making them! I think because I've got a background in computers and photography, making videos was a logical step for me to make, as I already owned the equipment necessary for my work! Creating 4K videos definitely needs a computer with a bit of oomph, and you'd be surprised how quickly storage space is devoured once you start collecting footage! Now that I'm officially retired, I approach making videos the same way as I would when at work, and I do spend a considerable amount of time on it! Ah! I used to be terrified of soldering, especially when it came to electronics, but I'm so much more confident now! Practice makes perfect as they say - apart from when it comes to jigsaws of course!!! Yes, it would be great to meet up again, and hopefully have more time to chat! Yes, I'm really looking forward to 2024, and to see what we can all achieve! Happy New Year to you and the family and all the best for 2024, Ian!

Hi Ian. A very interesting respective. I particularly liked your bloopers section. Please remind an old man how you toggle between DC and DCC on your layout. Do you just swap flying leads, or do you have something a little more sophisticated? Wishing you a very happy New Year.
@iansngauge
@iansngauge 6 ай бұрын
Thanks very much Paul! Haha! The bloopers! There were many more, just not that many caught on video, as I usually have the webcam turned off while recording! With the test track being temporary, I simply swap the leads between the DC/DCC controller using a Lever connector block! When I build my more permanent test track, I'll use a double pole double throw (I think) switch to go between them! Happy New Year and all the best for 2024, Ian.

Well you have learned a good deal over the last year! You are going to be in a good position when the permanent way team arrive to start track laying. It was interesting to hear you say you film in 4K. I did think about doing that, but I watched a video from Primal Video (a useful channel on all things video making) about what resolution should you film in for KZfaq. In the video the presenter suggested to look at the analytics and see what people watching your videos are using to watch them. In my case it was 95% on a device, which means that the best resolution they can get was 1080p. He said if that was the case filming and uploading in 4K probably wasn't worth it so I stuck with 1080p. I can imagine that the files at 4K are pretty hefty. Look forward to the videos in the New Year. Stephen
@iansngauge
@iansngauge 6 ай бұрын
Thanks Stephen! Yeah, I should be in a good place when I finally start some engineering work! I actually did look at how people were watching my videos before deciding to go 4K, and in my case, over 60% were watching on TV or computer! Shooting in 4K teaches you to be a bit more ruthless when culling footage! When I shot in HD, I used to keep every scrap of video footage, but now, it first gets placed into a maybe folder, before being completely deleted after a couple of weeks! Also, FWIW, it won't be long before 8K arrives, which will make HD video look awful when upscaled, although it will be a while before everyone has TV's that can handle 8K! All the best for 2024, Ian.

@@iansngauge That's very interesting Ian. I shall have to look into 4K filming again. Ive just bought a new iMac which will have the heft to cope with 4K film editing (my 2017 Intel machine really was showing its age).

@@Elvenhome - Hi Stephen! Did you go for one of the new iMac M3 models? I have an M2 MacBook Pro, and it is superb! However, at the moment I do all of my video editing on a 2019 iMac, although I had to upgrade the hard disk to a 1TB SSD to speed things up! I'll eventually move everything over to the MacBook Pro at some point though! Ian
@Elvenhome
@Elvenhome 6 ай бұрын
@@iansngauge Yes I did Ian I went for the basic model but upgraded the ram to 16GB and SSD TO 512GB. I’ve added a hub which also incorporates a 2TB ssd external drive. It is so much faster than my old iMac. Interestingly most of the videos reviews suggested that the iMac wasn’t so much better than the M1 iMac. But for those needing to move from Intel machines it was a no brainier. I am very pleased with, and I can finally start using Final Cut Pro and Motion more
@iansngauge
@iansngauge 6 ай бұрын
@@Elvenhome - That was a good move upgrading the RAM and internal SSD, and having an extra 2TB external SSD is definitely the way to go! Apple prices for adding extra memory and storage are insane compared to 3rd party options! Speed between M1/M2/M3 machines is a difficult thing to judge, as it depends what you're doing and how many CPU/GPU cores you opted for! But yeah, whatever Apple Silicon machine you opted for, it would blow an Intel based machine away! I now do all of my video editing in DaVinci Resolve, which I find excellent considering it's free! Enjoy your new machine! Cheers, Ian.
