Welcome to Ian's N Gauge channel!
In a previous video I showed how I'd decided to use code 55 track to build Shelfington.
In this video I’m going to show some preparation work I've had to perform before beginning the build proper.
Thanks very much for watching.

Hi Ian, the boxes look great, at present I have two Racco storage units with five boxes in each which I can fit my loco boxes and rolling stock boxes in. Glad you've found a good working solution to give you space to start track laying. All the best Allan

Hi Allan! I'd not heard of Racco storage, so had a quick look! Looks like they do some neat stuff! I just had to get away from storing stuff in their original boxes as it was becoming a pain to use them! Great to have finally made some space so I can lay track... eventually! Lol! All the best, Ian.

Hi Frank! I was getting so fed up with returning and retrieving my models from their original boxes that I just had to find a different solution! I was only away from the hobby for 35 years, and I can't believe how much things have changed, especially in the world of N gauge! I expect you're finding that too! All the best, Ian.

Greetings Shelfington and hello Ian 🖐It's good to know your bits are all safe and sound before you begin the track tickling 😳A couple of very good ideas for storage solutions there 😇and definitely a classier 💃option than my reused ready meal trays 😜I bet your foaming at the mouth ready to get going on the track work now 😉Very best wishes from the Emerald Isle ☘

Some interesting solutions. The first time that I took my class 122 out of its box I managed to snap off one of the buffer housings so for clumsy oafs like me solutions such as these are imperative! I have everything in its original box at the moment while my layout is being rebuilt, but even so I’ve a lot of wagons built from NGS kits that need a secure home, so I think I’ll give the foam boxes a try. Many thanks -Ed

Evening Ian😊 Those boxes look not a bad solution. I originally went down the road of the plastic boxes with the foam inserts. Only drawback is where they are two layer deep - getting stock out of the underneath layer can be a bit of a faff 😢. The other issue was taking stock out the foam tray - you needed to be careful or things got damaged. I turned to our continental friends for my own solution. Zig Zag foam trays in 5 high drawers. Pull the drawer open and the rolling stock is all on display. So easy to retrieve the stock. The foam trays were off of Amazon and the drawers from White Rose Model Works in Bedale - not a cheap solution I hasten to add😅.
@iansngauge
@iansngauge 6 ай бұрын
Morning Euan! Yes, I mention in the video that getting to the lower layers is a bit inconvenient - but a lot less inconvenient the finding rolling stock in their original boxes! Yes, I should have mentioned being careful getting them out of the foam, as it's possible to catch details if you're not careful! The same can be said about removing them from their boxes though - as you'll hear about in my next video!!! I remember a video when you mentioned the Zig Zag foam trays, and it looks like a great solution, and something I may look into in the future, when I want a more permanent home! Nothing in this hobby is cheap mate! Lol! All the best, Ian.

Hi Ian, now , you must be some sort of mind reader. I was only standing there pondering about what to do with my rolling stock yesterday afternoon. I have a couple of polystyrene boxes I keep them in at the moment which is not a good solution. The other reason it’s that I’m a little paranoid about someone breaking into the cabin and I want an easy solution whereby i can store them in doors until I’ve finalised my model railway insurance and you my friend have found it. I shall be ordering some of those boxes from WWS in the next hour or so! I think I heard mention of you laying track as well… or did I🤔😂 Looking forward to seeing it all happen at Shelfington, cheers Ian, John

@iansngauge 6 ай бұрын
Hi John! Look into my eyes... Lol! Nah, not a mind reader, just great minds think alike mate! One of the reasons I like the foam insert boxes is because they have a carry handle! They'll be stored below the layout, but as I'll need to get under there several (hundred) times over the next couple of years, it's great that I'll be able to move the boxes easily! I absolutely love the WWS loco boxes, and really enjoyed building them, as it scratched an itch I had for constructing something! I'm not sure I committed to laying track, did I? Lol! Need to work out how I'm going to do block occupancy next! All the best, Ian.

The WSS storage boxes have become very popular. I will be interested to see how you fare with them. I did look at the WWS boxes at Warley but I didn’t think they were much better than I already use, and I had a residual worry about storing locos in unpadded wood. I get my storage boxes from 10 Commandments which are essentially Really Useful boxes with pick and pluck foam so more like your rolling stock boxes. My locos are all in a four tray box but that is getting full now that I have over 40 of them ( not sure how or when that happened). It also supports a localish small business in Fife. I agree it can be a pfaff having to get the trays out to get the loco you want, but I haven’t seen a better solution yet, and I know they are securely held. Stephen
@iansngauge
@iansngauge 6 ай бұрын
Hi Stephen! The WWS boxes are a really snug fit, so the locos aren't going to be rolling around in their drawers, so I don't have a problem with them being unpadded! As they're sitting on a shelf, they're not going anywhere! Yeah, I'm not sure how our loco collections grow so quickly! It seems like only yesterday that I was purchasing my first, and now I've got eleven - and two more on pre-order! Lol! With the rolling stock boxes I've used, I like that they've got a carrying handle so I can easily move the boxes around when I need to - which will be more frequently as I need to get underneath the layout! All the best, Ian.

Hi Ian, Great to see your storage solution! Like you, I use the foam inlays, I have the ones you have which I have put in a plastic box to which I have three LOL! one for BR period, one for Post privatisation and one for a mix mash off stuff LOL! I then use a4 drawers which have the a4 foam inlays to store all my heritage stock for Goathland. I do like the look of the WWS drawers, but I have too many locos LOL! Now you have tidied up on with the track laying! 😁 All the best Tony.

Hi Tony! I was originally going to do something similar, putting foam inlays into some spare Really Useful Boxes I have! Unfortunately, the inserts were just a little to large for the boxes I had, so I went down this route! I like the idea of having different boxes for different eras! Track laying you say? Hmm! Let's not get too hasty, eh? Lol! All the best, Ian.

Hi Ian, the secret's out now! Though you waited until you had a solution, very wise ;) My locos are mostly kept in original boxes inside Really Useful boxes - so your footage earlier in the video was a familiar sight! Most of my wagons and coaches are in shallow boxes (e.g. chocolate boxes, got another one at Christmas!) with bubblewrap (the old-style sort with small bubbles, not what you get from Rails of Sheffield etc these days) or similar padding, and those boxes also go in the Really Useful boxes. Thing is I also pile stuff on _top_ of the Really Useful boxes, and they're deep ones, so I need a better solution. I'm inclined to do something similar to what Euan did several months ago with drawers and the zig-zag foam, but make it all from something much more generic so as to avoid the "Specialist Hobby" price premium! I'm sure you'll find your newly reclaimed space very useful, one way or another :)
@iansngauge
@iansngauge 6 ай бұрын
Hi Jonathan! Haha! Yes, my secret is known to the world! Lol! Yes, all of my original boxes are in Really Useful Boxes as you saw, but what you may have missed is that I keep my loco boxes in old cassette tape type cases that I found when clearing out dad's house! They were quite handy until I moved to my new solutions! The original boxes will now be moved to the loft to free up more space below the layout! Yes, I like Euan's solution, and may go down that route eventually, when I have a more permanent home for the boxes! I'll be moving them about a lot over the next couple of years as I'll need access underneath the layout quite frequently as I deal with what will inevitably become a rats nest of wires! I'm already finding my newly reclaimed space attracts all sorts of non-railway related items - especially paperwork! All the best, Ian.

Hi Ian - in some ways I am lucky that I don't have a large amount of rolling stock nor engines yet to need the box's, but as I will be adding to them this year I think I will need to invest in these solutions. At present I tend to leave them on the track in the rakes I have made them up in so I can switch on the power and run the same ones each time. But that will change no doubt in the future. What I do like about the WWS ones is that they will fir nicely on my shelves! Regards Steve

Hi Steve! I think I may have done things to wrong way around, buying lots of stock before having a proper layout! Lol! It's just so tempting to grab things while they're available, otherwise you never see them again! The WWS boxes will be great for storing on a shelf! I'm even considering putting a shelf up for them above the layout, and redoing my lighting, although that would be a big job that requires some thought - obviously! Lol! All the best, Ian.

Hello Ian, these looks like a nice little storage solution. Unfortunately to get one sent to Australia costs a small fortune so I have gone the way of using small plastic storage containers (with a top flip lid) that are about 200 x 150 x 45mm and have place a thin piece of foam at the bottom. To give you an idea they can fit 7 MK1 Farish coaches. I keep them in a draw stacked next to each other.

Hi Martin! As you probably saw in the video, I use the 15l Really Useful Boxes to store the original boxes, and plan on storing each one in the loft when they're full! Hi Ian - Very interesting subject and so much choice. I am hoping that the area behind the chimney where my fiddle yard is so large I can keep everything there. Failing that and I do have to store off the layout I will be following Euan's (The Growler) method after watching his video on using Zig Zag foam in drawers. All safely laid at an angle in foam so nice and safe and brilliantly displayed when you pull the drawer out. Yes not cheap but the best in my eyes and should outlast me. Regards Chris

Hi Chris! I wish I had enough room to keep all of my stock on track, but that won't be the case! Hi Ian, great video I use the plastic boxes with lids with foam bases but usually most of the rolling stock is left on the layout unless I am working on it with messy jobs! Hopefully track laying will now start not the rolling stock is nicely tucked away! Cheers Gary

Those foam tray boxes remind me of the ones I use to store my wargaming miniatures. They work ok but for my latest minis Ive been using trays with a magnetic bottom and magnets in the base of the minis so they magnetize to the tray. This would nto work for trains though I don't think.

Magnets are such a flexible solution for quite a few eventualities, but like you say, I don't think they'd work in this case! When I used to store wagons in their boxes, I used them to hold my Peco wagons in their boxes instead of the flimsy plastic strip that they came with! Cheers, Ian.
