The mighty Barcode Battler, one of the most overlooked game systems. Rightly so? Wrongly so? Should it get in the sea?
I went really in-depth with this one. If you ever wanted to find out how to play a Barcode Battler, you're gonna know after watching this. I take no responsibility for any mental breakdowns induced by this video.
With special thanks to Guru Larry for providing me with some fantastic cameo voicework / larrybundyjr

♫♫Intro theme music by Sam Beddoes, song written and sung by myself ♫♫
If it’s not music from an Amiga or the game I am reviewing in the video, I probably got any backing music from purpleplanet.com.
Sometimes I am a bit daft and I forget to credit gameplay footage or uploaded gaming-related content (such as adverts). It takes a huge amount of time to make my videos and using these helps immensely, but if you see your footage and I didn’t credit you, PLEASE let me know so I can put it right.
Thank you for taking the time to check out my channel :3

My parents got me this, and gave my sister a Gameboy. Gutted.
@rexapis2125
@rexapis2125 6 жыл бұрын
DobbyDoo24 There must have been more to this story, as the Barcode Battler was originally £40 at launch, at the end of May 1994 in the UK, whereas the Gameboy was nearly double the price. The Barcode Battler was then drastically reduced in price shortly after release, e.g. £5. So it sounds like your sister getting the Gameboy was for a main present, e.g. birthday/Christmas, and your parents just picked this up at the time to be able to give you something as well, and if it was for Christmas 1994, then the Barcode Battler would have only cost around £5..

I think I made the mistake of asking for it as they went away on holiday and brought it back as gifts for us. This video did bring back fond memories but ultimately it was just a slightly more complicated LCD game. My uncle used to bring me over bag fulls of barcodes he'd been saving up

The local Quinnsworths had a "try me!" Barcode Battler on display when I was a kid. It was utterly pointless. They didn't provide any cards and there where no instructions. Basically all you code do is push a button, hear it make a noise and flash numbers get confused and then wander off to try the Gameboy.
@WrestlingWithGaming
@WrestlingWithGaming 6 жыл бұрын
I went to school for computer engineering and got lost trying to follow these instructions. Well, I also changed my major to mass comm... so yeah. I would definitely have torn up some cereal boxes as a kid trying to play this. Anyway, great video! I love learning about weird and obscure stuff like this.

This was a great video - one of your best. I love how much thought and creativity goes into your videos. Clearly you spend a lot of time and energy making these. I have a huge amount of respect for that. I was aware of these devices when I was younger but had never actually seen or used one so was always curious as to how they actually functioned as a game. Is there a modern equivalent of this? Most current smartphones/tablets read barcodes with their cameras. Very informative. Keep up the great work!

That was pretty hilarious! I remember seeing these things when I was a kid back in the '90s and thinking "ohhhhh kaaaayyyyy". Sounded like a total snooze fest, so I'm glad to find out I wasn't wrong. Honestly if someone gave me this for Christmas or a birthday back then, it'd probably get about 15 minutes of play before being relegated to the back of a drawer. And that includes about 10 minutes worth of running around the house cutting out barcodes. Definitely wouldn't come close to my Donkey Kong game and watch. Played that thing until it broke, then took it apart and figured out how to fix it, then played it again until it broke terminally (screen ribbon connector got damaged). Also thanks, now I have your theme music stuck in my head!

Nostalgia. I had one of these as a kid when I was 6, it was extremely RNG and super challenging to understand, especially at that age. Probably one of the strangest but most quirky hand held of the 90s. (I like strange and quirky). I remember going around the damn house cutting barcodes off everything I could find to attach to one of those custom cards. I never got it to ever “register” any other barcode except the ones included. That’s even if you could get those to scan. The novelty soon wore off though.

I love the idea of this, and think it would do reasonably well with an update if released as a budget item. There was a similar thing in the late 90s and early 2000s, Skannerz, which tried to basically combine the Barcode Battler and Pokemon. But it failed thanks to needing a specific barcode to heal your guys and, if memory serves, only being able to have a single one of each item in your inventory at a time. Plus, your data was saved in volatile RAM, so you could lose everything if you spent too long changing the batteries.
