We had the awesome opportunity to tear into a 2001 Dodge NV5600 from a semi-local car hauler, that had an astonishing 1,160,000 miles on the clock. He was on the road unloaded and experienced a failure of 6th and then 5th gear, and brought it over to us for a rebuild. He stated the transmission was rebuilt previously at 700k miles. Very cool experience!

Why am I watching you rebuild a transmission that I don’t even have? Because it’s relaxing ha. Your shop is top notch and your helper is awesome. Dude makes me look lazy when I work on projects haha

Thanks for the content Andrew appreciate seeing what good maintenance can do and wow not bad looking for the mileage I would like to get a nv5600 someday but they seem to be getting hard to find so I’m just sticking with the 5 speed for know I will be applying your tips and tricks to my next 4500 build

You need a winch bad, that chain hoist sucks and way to loud !

Thanks for sharing. What type of symptoms do you think the owner would have seen or felt prior to his major failure on both the Nv4500 and the NV5600, or what should we be paying attention to ? How often do you recommend changing the oil on the NV4500 and NV5600?

Synthetic oil does the tarnish color most of the time.

In my NV56 I run two quarte Lucas oil stabilizer the Dino type and top it off with Amsoil sever gear and works great and makes it shift and down shift the best so far and what do your recommend as far as trans oil .

Only when there’s symptoms presenting. If they’re cared for and working well, they can easily last 700k+.

Please get the young fella to wear gloves. Cancer sucks from working in oils etc. ask me how I know. Get him to Google causes of r chop cancer treatment it’s petro chemicals
