Driving RC cars and trucks around home and the neighborhood - it's what childhood RC memories are made of! Today, there's more choice than ever before. So where do you start with a 'basher' for just general fun and blasting around?
We know that monster truck type vehicles are great all-rounders. Their big tires help them through stuff where even the popular SCT (Short Course Trucks) might struggle. They're fast, fun, durable and just an all-round good time.
So you want a monster truck. Great! There's heaps of choice and reviews will help you narrow down what you want. But there's an important question to answer before you start comparing models: what's the best size for bashing fun?
Today, we're going to try to find out! Let's drive!

Low key one of the most useful videos for a beginner RC enthousiast, so easy to overpay for the largest and most expensive because it seems so much fun, or to underpay and get the smallest. This was very helpful in knowing my choice, thanks!

I think this video is an interesting comparison. I think for a lot of areas we run in 1/10 may be the best choice. I was glad to hear you say you wouldn't let your sun drive the larger scale trucks. I think the safety issue is often ignored by some people and indulgent parents. One thing to keep in mind is that in urban and suburban areas r/c cars spend a lot of time in parking lots and streets. They also are to taken to school fields and athletic fields that have very few bumps and jumps. The way the XMaxx looked on the jumps and on the track gives you a totally different impression on the two different surfaces. This video was a great idea.

Thank you! It's great that there's something for most people and locations in RC, but identifying a good general purpose truck is probably broadly useful. That was the thinking anyway :)

This video holds so much great info for a beginner. When I have my trucks out bashing them, and of course people come over to watch, the Xmaxx is the one people say they want. But that’s after seeing it in its element, on a construction site, or skate park. I always tell them that if they’re going to run it around the house they’ll hate it. I usually point people to my MT10 or 4s Kraton for normal backyard bashing, and warn them of the perils of Xmaxx ownership. It’s not a beginner truck, and is actually quite dangerous in the wrong hands. Great vid, Subscribed!

I definitely learned after buying just how much space I need for my 6S Kraton. We have a decent sized lot, but the Kraton needs some serious space to stretch its legs. Even the street in front can be perilous with the sidewalks. It's easy to get caught up with what's fastest or can jump the farthest when it can be a ton of fun to get something that works with your space, or nearby space if you don't have a yard

Ain't that the truth! I found this with motorcycles, too. I had a brand new 125cc Honda loaner while my big bike was in the shop for a few days one time. I was cackling away in my helmet as I red-lined that thing through traffic in every gear. Man it was fun. Right size truck for the area really does make a big difference :)

What I found out is the traxxas XRT is not as robust as the XMAXX. Even though it's built on a similar platform my XRT is always breaking. I have already gone through 3 chasses and I haven't gone through 1 on my XMAXX. I have also had my xbox a lot longer. I'm not the only one that has realuzed that, many who own both feel the same. Wish I would have just bought another XMAXX. There truly is nothing out there like an XMAXX Traxxas can't even defeat their own creation. Its that good! Arrma has been quiet for a while. I wonder if they have something up their sleeve coming out. Losi came out with the awesome dirtbike. Its so good i bought all 3 colors. lol.

Horizon are on fire this past year, no doubt. Making amazing things. XRT vs Xmaxx durability, I think the XRT has the same challenges as a lot of Arrma's rigs: optimise for performance at the expense of flexible durability. Kinda one or the other. Difficult to get both with current materials technology and at that price. Because really, the xmaxx is a giant clown car. That's what makes it fun and what makes it so tough. But it's a bit of a boat compared to more optimised designs. But then it outlasts those many times over. Pick your poison really!

For a adult even noob sure you will get smaller have fun but in no time you will CRAVE a bigger / faster one for sure. Cant go wrong with a truggy if you get a decent one they are pretty durable for bashing on grass/ gravel all skateparks will bust stuff lol. Also, is there a class that's the "best" universal fun factor of them all?? I realize it's super subjective - but I've been surprisingly drawn into scale crawlers (and I'm not even an off-road junkie) and especially smaller ones 1/24 and now Traxxas 1/18 TRX4m (which we still can't get here where I am - 3 months later after everyone else has done their unboxings 🤪), as do it all's in the 10x12m house backyard - which has to be shared with the ususal assortment of sheds, garden patches, bbq, clothing lines, bird feeders and pet cats. Someting that doesn't require commitment of time and travel to get to a course and is frugal on space and wallet to start with?
@RCTNT
@RCTNT Жыл бұрын
Still waiting on the TRX-4m release here in Australia, too, though I've heard rumors that some local hobby stores have received stock in the last day or two. For what you're asking, my experience has been smallish crawlers are great to satisfy all of the above (fun, portability, low price, easy to enjoy on a residential block). For faster stuff, see my current video and the follow-up one that releases just over 24 hours from now (compares buggy, SCT and monster truck in 1/10 scale for home-scale bashing). Between those and a small crawler, you're covered for plenty of low-budget fun and variety, I think!

I definitely think if you can afford one, and have some appropriate places to use it, that a larger 6S-8S truck would be a lot of fun... smaller than 1/10 can still be fun, and handy as they're cheaper , easier to store and transport, easier to find places with enough space to let them rip...but can struggle some with varied terrain more ... so, 1/10 to 1/8 , 3s-6s is kinda where I think it's at... If you can, please do a video showing some 3S 1/10 like the Rival, vs some 4S or even compare to 6S....maybe also show a truck on 4S vs 6S in that same truck.... I'm struggling to choose a "basher" .... we race so we have some 4S packs... I can't decide... Rival/Granite/Vorteks on 3S An Arrma 4S on 4S , Kraton/Outcast Or, a 6S Arrma monster truck on 4S... Any help in that decision making would be most appreciated... Cheers

@RCTNT 8 ай бұрын
Got it. I'll think on it. I think this video kinda covers your decision to some extent, but I get you want more. I'm in the process of comparing 8x different SCT and desert trucks from 2s to 4s, to start. I guess mojave 4s vs 6s could also be useful. I have the SBR 2.0 and the Baja Rey 2.0 here, maybe that could be helpful. Though that's more for 'scale' bashing than hard driving. Decisions, decisions!!

Oh and for what it's worth, something like the Rival or a sturdy SCT both could be run on 2S just fine and be really really fun. a bit confused about your comments concerning S rating having to do with run times."holes in the bucket" S has nothing to do with capacity but with voltage. A 1s battery is 3.7 volts. A 2s 7.4 volts, 3s 11.1 volts and so on. mAh rateing is the storage capacity and will determine run times, not S rating. Actually S rating has nothing to do with the batteries ability to provide power at a faster rate either, C rating determines that so no matter how you look at it your a bit confused. In any case still a great review and helpled me to decide on the 1/10th scale car being what im looking for. Seems like an all around good choice, brushless set up, 2s batts are very cheap and keeping it light with the 2200 mAh battery would deff increase handling and durability. Thanks for your post!
@RCTNT
@RCTNT 5 ай бұрын
I was comparing runtime between batteries of different cell counts (S) with the same capacity (mAh). Look at it like this: Bucket = battery MAh = how full it is S = how many holes in the bottom This is why a 2000mAh 2S will last roughly as long as a 3000mAh 3S, assuming the same discharge (C) rating on both and the same load being applied. This is why watts are useful, being a function of Volts and Capacity.

Well I ordered my Rival V2 brushless. Ive been in the Hooby, mostly flight for ever and have been working as a contractor test pilot for an experimental VTOL military aircraft for the past 10 years. Crazy 20ft wingspan aircraft. A huge part of testing had to do with flight endurance and battery configs. Lets jsut say I have a SHIT LOAD of batteries to play with! LOL Im gonna look for best performance along with optimal run times and see what i come up with. Deff gonna be testing both 2 and 3s setups. (time to break out the Watt Meter!) First things first though, the handheld radio has to go, Ill be using my FlySky Nobel 4 with the car so can do some ESC tunning as well. Looking forward to sharing with you. Im excited to get more into the whole car thing for sure. At least the crashes are fixable. Way less stressfull then flying multi million dollar aircraft with experimental software! lol PS I did order the better after market A-arms for the car (front and rear) and will probably just install them right after first test run to make sure the thing works before investing the time to install.

I have an electronics background and try to make things clear in my videos, but sometimes it could be better to understand. I trust you get what I was saying now with the discharge rate between batteries of varying cell counts when all else is equal. Enjoy your foray into ground vehicles. The Rival is a great start, super durae and the RPM arms really help. Also the NB4 is a worthy radio, I use mine for many cars too 😎

Yea yea i do, basically smol rc cars are the Best for budget and tight turns but if there is any junk on the road you just lose control or get stuck. And i also keep In mind to stay away from thick or tall grass because, you know how it is. ;) OH i have a buggy btw.

To me, looks like 1/10th is the sweet spot for your track, unless you want to sweep all the debris off! I found the same thing when I bought a 144001. The full sized gravel outside my shop was just way too big. Pea gravel or dirt would be best.

They're all 🆒 it's just a 14 & 16 scale are hard to see cuz they're so small & then when you get above/below 10th scale everything gets expensive as shit, I think 10th scale you get something that can go over the terrain pretty good, reasonably priced + reliable all at the same time... I have the original X-Maxx 6S when it first got released and I haven't even driven it that much because most of my friends have 10th scale and it's just such a bully if you hit their cars you won't only run them over you'll probably break their shit lol

Why not? We've done it 3 times on this channel so far with 3 different cars and bashed hard each time with no breakages. But breakages are expected with such treatment - sometimes that's an acceptable cost to pay :)

That it is. Can't get too crazy on this property but when we move I'm planning an actual, proper track. This right here is a place to run stuff but it's a "track" rather than a Track.

The top gear test track times ended up with a new board at one point, didn't it? Been a while but I watched that religiously when they came out.
