Thanks Jim, really clear pics and good to see it done on the correct engine for my 2004 TDCi car (which I believe had quite a short 'run' in this form). Dead keen to ensure no cock ups when I do mine!

Never heard of only doing one belt knowingly most guys earlier on didn't realise there was a second belt though still had chain the amount of engines I have changed over the years because the wet belt not done very rare for one of them making it to 200k on the original wet belt 170/180k is generally the mileage they blow one solution is to do the whole lot together

Hello Jim! Time to change the cambelt because the last period was 4 years ago...So my question is : must I change this part too ? (DAYCO KBIO01 Timing Belt Kit ) I asked a lot of car mechanics and they told me is not necessary....I'm confused now :-) Same motor : 1.8 TDCI 115 HP ( KKDA )

Worth noting there is little point just doing just the top belt unless its a very early Mk4 Mondeo that has a lower chain. The wet belt will go ping waaaaaaay before that top one. The top one always looks like new the wet belt not so much! Good video :)

Depends on if the engine has previously had the chain swapped for a belt in oil. General rule of thumb though is anything newer than late 2005 will have a wet belt, anything older will have a chain. My 55 plate C-max has the 1.8l KKDA with a chain, has 109k on the clock and hasn't yet developed a rattle or timing drift... Do need to do a dry belt though because I got 50% off my cam blet when the engine mount on that side failed, slamming the timing cover into it and shredding it. it's now more of a timing string than a belt.

Hi Jim am going to do my cambelt but I have a question y do u losen the camshaft sprocket as the engine is set to tdc and when u tighten it up how do you know it’s in the right place
@ALLTHINGSJIM
@ALLTHINGSJIM 3 жыл бұрын
You have to loosen the sprocket otherwise you cannot tension the belt correctly which would leave the timing to be out as the belt would be too slack and probably end up skipping a tooth, the sprocket itself isnt timed up but the camshaft is, thats why we put a bar in the back of the camshaft when timing it - the sprocket has no marks and can be done up in any position. Its undone to allow it to move so we can get the correct tension on the belt, then done back up, aslong as you leave the pins and bar in the timing doesnt move- but be sure to turn it over by hand a good few times to be 1000% sure. Hope that helped 👍

do i need to change also the wet belt when eventually doing my timing belt to my mondeo m4 2008 1.8 tdci?
@ALLTHINGSJIM
@ALLTHINGSJIM 5 жыл бұрын
Thats a tricky one (question I mean aha) , if it is fitted with a wet belt oil system then yes you should as the changing interval will be the same as the top cambelt , however upto and sometimes including 2008 models were fitted with a chain system which wouldnt need changing so youd need to find out which yours is, the easiest way to do this I recon would be to go to a ford main dealers parts department with your reg and chassis numbers and ask them to look. Hope this helps 👍

Do you know how to remove a timing chain casing? I have an oil leak around metal gasket between engine block and timing chain casing. Many thanks.
@ALLTHINGSJIM
@ALLTHINGSJIM 6 жыл бұрын
yes i do! It depends on what though as they all vary, for instance some are solid parts and just require you to undo all the bolts on the cover ( after following up engine the timing procedures and stripping down the crank pulley etc...) and use a scraper tool to tap between the cover and engine just to break the seal and pull the cover off, and some are built with thin metal that bends (like on newer transit vans) when removing so you end up replacing the cover as well. It differs so much from vehicle to vehicle. sorry I cant be more use than this....

thanks a lot for a such quick response. I have engine 1.8 tdci in mondeo, year 2007, 220.000 mls. I am asking because i must replace water pump, belts and other things and i decided to fix an oil leak but i don't know if there is problem with loosen bolts under the chain that hold casing to the block or gasket failure (article number : XS4Q 6K012AC). Did you ever seen any problems with gasket on these engines? Oil leaks over the bolt for locking crankshaft.

This is great thank you. A couple of questions. Worth fitting aux belt and tensioner too. Any gasket on the cam belt cover needed to renew. New rocker cover gasket needed? Did you use or is a flywheel locking tool needed?
@ALLTHINGSJIM
@ALLTHINGSJIM 6 жыл бұрын
Ant Johnson Hi! Yeah its always worth replacing the rocker cover gasket and auxiliary belt if you can while your there, unless the auxiliary belt tensioner feels rough or tight when you rotate it id just leave it, yeah you need to pin the flywheel, thats the only reason you see me remove the alternator as the hole for it is behind it! Its abit of a pain to find aswell without a mirror to be honest, and no theres no gasket for cambelt cover, hope this helps 👍

ALL THINGS JIM fantastic, Thanks for the response. Sorry I wasn't clear, I meant the other tool as shown in the video at 11 minutes? Once back together, I'd worry about trying to start. I had to have rac out after I replace the fuel filter, couldn't get car started. 😁
@ALLTHINGSJIM
@ALLTHINGSJIM 6 жыл бұрын
Ant Johnson ah I see, thats the flywheel locking tool, you dont need that for this job unless you want to do alot more work! Thats needed for if you were going to take the crank pulley off as just the pin wouldn't be strong enough to allow you to undo the crank bolt, but the bottom crank pully doesn't come off for this job, so just use the pin and bar in camshaft like shown and youll be fine 👌

Why would you open up the engine to change this? I know you need to be sure the timing is right. If the engine ran just fine before the job, then just mark the positions of the camshaft and the fuel pump, swap the belt and the tensioner, aligning to the marks and it's done. Loosening the camshaft sprocket seems unnecessary (unless there was a timing problem before the belt changed). To make sure everything is right, turn the engine a few times after the job is done. If the new belt has the same characteristics as the old one and the timing is good before the job then the sprocket does not need moving.

how much would it cost to have this done in a garage if u did not have the tools in the video, or if u buy the tools would it be cheaper to send it to a garage, no disrespect to the chap in the video ,but it seems a lot of work to just get at a timing belt, he put in a pin and then the bar in the over head cam ,i find that strange ,when the bar does the same thing as the pin, but all said i enjoyed the end where he states if i don't do this ,you may damage your engine, a well, looks like iam of to spend hundreds of cash for a job that could have been done a lot quicker ,if he had not taken half the engine apart .
