In this video I show my #1 method to easily flush the power steering system even with rack and pinion without the engine running. This is a quick and simple method that'll have you scratching your head thinking, "why didn't I think of that?" The vehicle used in this video is a 2005 GMC ENVOY with the 4.2l inline 6 cylinder vortec engine.

Hi Jimmy. I followed your instructions and did this to my Kia. It was so easy! I even took the reservoir out and cleaned the hell out if it. Apparently there is a screen in there that gets dirty. Anyway, you saved me hundreds of $$ in repairs and thank you so much!

One suggestion would be since you have the Turkey baster available use it to pull as much of the old fluid out as possible before you remove the line which should help to cut down on the amount of fluid spilling out. It would also reduce the number of times you would have to turn the wheel and refill the pump.

Two thumbs up! Great video and by far the safest way to do a complete flush of the power steering system. Unlike other videos I watched which tell you to turn on the engine and purge the old fluid out that way- too risky of running out of fluid in the system. This vid is more DIY and makes more sense. Thanks for sharing.

Chris thank you for the really great video, I know that you made three of them but I think that this one is the best. You got the best money shot when you showed the clear line and you saw the old chocolate brown nasty oil and the nice golden clear brown new oil together back to back, as they say seeing is believing. I really like this process as it assure that no air is introduced into the power steering/rack and pinion system.

First of all, thanks for putting in the time and effort to explain this procedure. Great video! Just did this on my 2010 Nissan Altima. I was unable to remove the hose barb from the power steering return line easily. Ended up pouring boiling water over the line and making a small nick in the line with a utility knife. I was then able to pry it free with a flat head screwdriver and some needle nose pliers. Hope this helps someone out there if they run into this. Cheers.

I've tried using a piece of a 2x4 on top of the jack pad as you did to lift my Touareg, but it cracked while I was lifting, so I don't do that anymore (wood is not consistently hard). I have since bought some of those hard rubber pads and a couple hockey pucks which have been more reliable. Excellent video of the fluid change. Viewers should be careful to use the fluid that is called out either on the cap or the owners manual. My NTM Jeep Commander calls for a very specific Chrysler fluid spec MS10838 which is different from standard steering fluid because it also operates the hydraulically driven engine cooling fan. Apparently there have been quite a few Jeep owners who used standard steering fluid which ruined the hydraulic pump, and those pumps are expensive and not easy to find.

Two things Always use the right fluid (the wrong one can damage the seals and cause leaks) Some reservoirs have a fine mesh screen in the bottom that can clog Great video👍 If you don't have the zip tie, a spare bolt shoved in the little piece of line can make a decent plug too
@ApartmentKing66
@ApartmentKing66 3 жыл бұрын
If the return line plugs into aluminum as some do, a bolt won't do it as it isn't watertight and could be the wrong size. That's why he uses tubing and a zip tie. I'd go get those if the rubber return line connects to aluminum.

Just a reminder for those who don't know if you get air in the system you will have to vacuum the system which essentially pulls all the air pockets out of power steering rack and pinion system. This is something that normally needs done when replacing a rack and pinion system which can also be done at home but will need an alignment afterwards. Good video!

@dtnel
@dtnel 5 жыл бұрын
@@jeannayoung4496 I use a vacuum adapter and vacuum pressure tool and pull a vacuum on it and let it sit for awhile. You'll be able to tell if there's air in the system because the vacuum gauge will drop in pressure. I followed this to a T, at least to the best of my knowledge, but turning the wheels pumped out very little fluid at a time. I was turning the wheel for a couple hours and it kept getting harder and harder to turn. When I cranked it and checked the fluid it was all foamy, and the steering was very hard intermittently followed by loud pump whining. Could it be a different system in my 05 Ford Taurus, or maybe a problem in it?
