1.5 Year Progress video: • 1.5 YR ADULT FIGURE SK...
When salsa dancing stopped challenging me, I found an endless mountain to climb in figure skating. Here is my first 15 months on ice, out of which includes 12 months of weekly private lessons.

Awe thank you, I love that! Let’s keep it up! I love defying the odds of how adult skaters can progress in this sport! Definitely the hardest thing I’ve ever done in my life, and equally as rewarding when I finally notice results!

Omg your 1 yr progress is like amazing! Thank you for the encouragement. Right now the hardest part is getting up at 4:30am to go skating before work because that’s the only time for me during the week, with my neighborhood rink still closed. It’s like I went from one extreme hour to do what I love (salsa at 12 midnight), to the other extreme hour (crack of dawn). Skating is infinitely more work but SOOO much more personally rewarding!!

Hey, I came looking for your comment because I just remembered someone talking about salsa before skating! I’ve noticed so many (incredibly good) skaters with youtube channels, who can double axel in their sleep, just totally disappear during competitions... I was just pondering.... So, (you know, in my ‘extensive-years-of-skating-solos’) I’ve definitely felt my legs turn to jello during the warm-up time before going on. But in both shows, as soon as anyone’s music hit the speakers, something else inside turned on. And in both shows I skated my program better than during all my practices. I was just wondering if salsa dancing actually has some kind of value in turning something on before performing? I was thinking maybe it’s because with salsa you basically fuse with musical timing, and every dance is spontaneous, so you’re in the flow state to bring it, to do anything. So I came wondering what you might think?

@@salsatosalchow7294 I'm so so happy to hear that it works that way for you! It's wonderful really, a miracle!! Use that to your advantage. For me it really doesn't work that way at all, even though the one competition I have done in my life (it's on my channel if you wanna check it out) was a program to Parecen Viernes by Marc Anthony (so... salsa...).... And yet I fell apart at the seams. Due to the nerves I exhausted myself halfway through the program and started tripping and stumbling because my muscles weren't getting oxygen because I was exhausted because I wasn't breathing properly because I was nervous/terrified. So yeah, that's my experience despite dancing salsa socially (no competitions, just recreationally) for several years.

@@natsskates Wait, I completely felt that. That’s the same feeling I had during warmup. How your legs completely stop working! It’s not even fair! That’s definitely why, to my first shows, I only invited friends who’d either skated with me from rental skates, or friends who have skated in their life and understand what it takes. I’ve also never competed so I definitely can’t speak to that. I love your generous thoughts to my theory (debunked. Hehe). On so many levels, skating is the hardest thing I’ve ever challenged myself with in life. BTW, I was always impressed by your 1 year skating progress. You progressed like amazing fast!!!! (I think you’re going on 3 yrs now? ... but I can’t speak to several years yet)

@@kelaex That’s so awesome 😍Lately I’ve been enviously watching YT videos of figure skaters on frozen lakes! That’s definitely a dream one day. But I want to be so much better. Oh, I broke down when I went back to practice (after the Christmas show) realizing how in order to advance in this sport it only gets sooo much harder. Left the rink in tears of frustration... but my coach called me, pep talked, and I got back up again.

@@salsatosalchow7294 Aw no!! Don't put pressure on yourself! You're doing amazing and you're already progressing really fast. The rest is time, but I believe that you're more likely to get really good, when you're enjoying it. What are your goals?

@@kelaex I love that (“more likely to get good when you’re enjoying it”)! This is why I miss having adult skater friends (who are all always at the same rink). So much understanding and mutual motivation. I guess my goals have really only been getting up to at least jumping doubles. I mostly enjoy (literally) the endless challenge/defying the odds as an adult skater. Shows and competitions can happen along the way, but I can’t really say those are my ‘goals’=something that pushes me to work hard. It really is more the endless challenge and excitement for how far I can go. How about you?

You know, I remember something about learning the sit spin (right off the bat) helped my upright spin in general. I think it’s the centrifugal force of my leg going around. Even thought the sit spin itself took about a year to have any quality, I do remember practicing that naturally made my upright spin better. 🤔 I still swing my leg around (like for a sit spin) in order to center myself before going into a fast spin now.

I wanna do some private coaching. Ive recently entered freestyle 2, but I take group lessons. I like learning with my friends, but you don't really get that focused help when you're in a class with 6 or so other people.

@@idkwhy7494 I’ve taken group lessons before. If it’s a generic rink group lesson, it’s not that beneficial. Exactly like you said, it’s not focused help. I’ve also taken group lessons set up by my coach. Those are much much better and definitely beneficial. They are like a super focused practice session. But I’ve been taking private lessons since whatever this video said-basically beginning of 2020. I feel like with figure skating you kind of have to have a dedicated coach.
